  • Dog-friendly South Snowdonia site one mile from the Mawddach estuary
  • Walks from the site; 20 minutes’ drive to Coed y Brenin Forest Park
  • Within walking distance of the shops in Fairbourne
Got a thing for mountains, waterfalls and mountain biking trails? Or perhaps a cycle-easy trail along an estuary, followed by paddleboarding around Barmouth harbour? Such is the story at Garthyfog, a dog-friendly site in south Snowdonia, one mile from the Mawddach estuary. With Barmouth’s beach, harbour and promenade an hour’s walk or 20 minutes’ cycle away, you’ll have all the pleasures of coastal camping to mix and match with the mountain biking mecca at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (20 minutes’ drive) or hilly hikes up Penygader (25 minutes). Pitches here are sheltered and tucked away on a hill, so they’re not all level. With this hillside position, views are rather handsome and make for a pretty backdrop to any barbecue. Whether it’s walking, climbing or mountain biking you’ve got in mind, you’ll always have the site to prop your feet up at afterwards. Having operated for many years (with guests often returning), you’ll have a well-kept toilet block, two showers, two toilets and a dishwashing area at your disposal. As for the seaside… well, when you’re not ambling down to Barmouth over the Mawddach estuary via the grand Barmouth Bridge, the seaside village of Fairbourne is just 45 minutes’ stroll – that's a yes to the beach, as well as restaurants, pubs, shops and fish and chip shops.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch (small)

Liked The site was well maintained on a slope and the toilets very clean. It was ideally situated for a cycling holiday being directly on the mawddach trail. We cycled across the bridge at the mouth of the estuary into Barmouth. Spectacular scenery.

Liked Absolutely wonderful, yes it's a basic set up, but the bonus is that the night sky on a clear night is magical.
The toilet block and washing up area are very clean.
The owner is very kind and welcoming.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch (small)

Liked We were blessed by the silence and by the beauty of the nature that surrounded us and the warm welcome afforded us. We were also the happy recipients of perfect Welsh weather so never felt the need to move off the spot ! As the only happy campers during our four days it was just us and the birds during the day and the bats and the owls at night. Also blessed by no electricity or wifi to compliment a brief return to a simpler and more restful way of being.

Disliked Nothing - all the practical facilities were clean and worked well. Plenty of hot water and a pound bought you a good 5min shower.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch (small)

Liked Amazing scenery in every direction and a great shower. Very peaceful and quiet. The owner was very friendly and knows the area well.

Disliked The campsite being on a hill meaning there were not many flat spots to park my campercar on.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Location, view, friendly and helpful owner ;) Lots to do in the area , beautiful quiet place ,

Disliked Nothing really, just please remember it is a camping surrounded by nature so things like small midges or not perfectly flat ground is something absolutely normal and I don’t really understand people who complain about it. If you like perfection in every aspect ..maybe better stay home next time :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Peaceful, amazing views, friendly and helpful owners. Feels remote and yet easy to walk, cycle or train it to Barmouth.
Discount for solo campers, always appreciated.

Disliked Slight disadvantage is that the site is big but quite a lot of it is sloping, so campers tend to pitch close together on the flat bits.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch (small)

Liked Beautiful location, peaceful and calm with great views, very friendly and helpful owners. Lovely walks from every direction, easy access to the train station for trips further afield, and also the Mawddach cycle trail.

Disliked A lot of the site is sloping so pitch choice can be limited if it's busy.

Cau Bach non-electric grass tent pitch (secluded)

Liked Great little find. I stopped in the secluded pitch, which was perfect for me. I had my own walled area, with fire pit, benchs and picnic table. My dog loved it.

Showers nice and clean and only a £1.
Toilets nice and clean. Few spiders, but can cope with that.

Disliked Nothing about the site was negative, apart from the midges swarming me, but that's not the fault of the site lol.

Local attractions

Whether you’re a newbie to the whole walking thing or a seasoned trail veteran, there are walks for all levels locally… and some straight from the site. Perhaps you’ll want to set your sights on Arthog Waterfalls (half an hour’s walk) or go straight for the big gun, Penygader’s mountain trails (under three hours’ walk or 25 minutes’ drive). Those of you who prefer to pedal your way about may want to make headway for the The Mawddach Trail (around half an hour’s walk). This nine-mile traffic-free highway runs down a disused railway line from beachy Barmouth to Dolgellau, where you might want to extend your route along the Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) through meadows, woodlands and a conifer plantation. Your blood may already be pumping from all the activities, but those of you who are after adrenaline practically on tap will want to head on up to Zip World Slate Caverns (50 minutes), where zipwires and trampolines will take things to new heights – not literally, though, as they’re part of an underground cave system.
