  • A 35-minute drive from Zip World Llechwedd and Bounce Below
  • Easy access to the Torrent Walk and Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre
Hiker, biker or both? Walk this way. Gwynedd’s Torrent Walk Campsite is a mecca for mountain bikers and walkers, and has plenty of other activities to get stuck into nearby… For walkers, the Torrent Walk is only 500 metres from the site. Cadair Idris and its three trails can be tackled a short drive away. If you're aiming for Wales' tallest summit, then take the 50-minute drive to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) too. Keen bikers can try out Dyfi Bike Park or Coed-y-Brenin, which are both within 20 minutes' drive of the site. Those with kids might want to pay a visit to the underground adventure at King Arthur's Labyrinth (15 minutes' drive) or the slate caverns at Zip World Llechwedd and Bounce Below (35 minutes). For watersports, head to Bala, 25 minutes' drive away, or for rides on the Welsh Highland Railway, aim for Porthmadog. At Corris Mine Explorers, 15 minutes' drive away, you can all take a tour of an abandoned Victorian slate mine too. Back at base, Torrent Walk Campsite is surrounded on all sides by woodland, farmland and mountain views, with pitches on a sheltered, level field. Site facilities include a toilet and shower block, disabled facilities, washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, freezers, a microwave and mobile charging facilities. There’s also a power wash for bikes and equipment, and the Torrent Walk team can store your bike for you if needed. For stocking up, the garage just up the road sells essentials and camping gas. A shop and café are within five minutes' walk of the site. Otherwise, a small supermarket and a wide range of shops are in the village of Dolgellau, a mile and a half away. Cooking your own dinner? Campfires are allowed, but all the materials must be purchased on site. Looking for a dog-friendly beach day? Fairbourne beach and Barmouth beach are dog-friendly at some times of the year.

What customers say

This well-maintained campsite offers a beautiful location with plenty of local walks and attractions. Visitors praise the clean, hot showers, free Wi-Fi, and friendly, helpful staff. Pitches are generally spacious and level, with many appreciating the option of fire pits. While the site is largely quiet, some mention occasional road noise and that facilities can be busy during peak times. The access lane is noted as narrow for larger vehicles.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked A convenient site with easy access to local walks and beautiful surroundings.

Disliked A convenient site with easy access to local walks and beautiful surroundings.

Unfortunately, our stay was disappointing. We stayed on an EHU pitch, which was very scruffy, poorly maintained, and looked quite run down in places.

On our first night, we were kept awake until around 11pm by loud music and excessive noise. Our second day was lovely, and we enjoyed exploring the local walks, but when we returned to our pitch, a group of more than 20–30 young people had set up nearby, resulting in a lot of noise and behaviour I was not comfortable with. As I was staying with a young child, I didn’t feel comfortable remaining on site and made the difficult decision to leave a night early. Losing a prepaid night and facing a four-hour drive home was extremely disappointing.

The toilet facilities appeared to be cleaned regularly and there was a strong smell of bleach, but they lacked attention to detail. The taps had heavy black grime around them, which made the facilities feel unhygienic. We chose to use the portable shower facilities instead of the original shower block.

Overall, while the location is excellent and the surrounding countryside is beautiful, the poor maintenance, lack of consideration for noise, and the atmosphere created by other campers meant our experience fell well below expectations.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Loved the natural look of the site with trees shrubs and bushes. On the site there are lakes but with the dry hot weather its all dried up a shame but still lovely site.
The 12pm leave time was very helpful for packing up unstressed
Good number of shower and toilet facilities
Cleaned throughout the day.
The young lady who maintains the site and the office is. Awesome she never stops and is super helpful and friendly
We will return even though we had some problems

Disliked The disability amenities were ok but the disabled toilet was too low for a disabled toilet so transfer from wheel chair to toilet was difficult.
My carer is male and there is only one disabled shower one in male and one ladies so we got up at 6am so we could both go in the ladies

All of the roads and tracks on site are big crush,I have a electric wheel chair so it wasnt too bad but if you had a manual chair you may find it difficult

Electric grass pitch

Liked Toilets and showers were cleaned multiple times a day. Planes flying over us. Level pitch and electric was right next to our pitch. Water tap was easily accessible. No noise after 11 is a massive winner from us too and the logs and fire pit available on site. We felt safe, and only 10 mins from mach loop.

Disliked Entry road was obviously a private shared road with a few pot holes and in need of some attention.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Clean toilets, with showers included in the price and not push button. We reserved a super pitch which was great. Quiet site and lots to do in the area. Free wi-fi throughout the site that actually worked! A definite bonus.

Disliked 35 minute walk to the centre of town partially along a road without pavements. No problem if you have a car or wish to travel by taxi.

Electric optional grass tent pitch (small, two person)

Liked Location was great for what I needed. Showers were lovely and hot and kept clean and tidy. Perfect for a couple of nights

Disliked Unfortunately I had a hen party staying in one of the safari tents behind my pitch, they were very loud and refused to turn their radio down until it got to 11pm (which is the cut off point according to site rules) which is not great when you have an early morning start. They weren’t mindful of who was around them, they could have lowered the volume to allow others to sleep.
Also not really anywhere near my pitch that I could park due to undulating ground, so I blocked another empty pitch with my car.
Showered were great, but the PIR sensor for the lights wasn’t very affective as it kept switching the lights off mid shower/wash

Local attractions

The mountains and trails of Snowdonia, the beaches of Barmouth and the north Wales coast, and heritage attractions like the Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway and Harlech Castle are all within about half an hour’s drive of Torrent Walk, and Snowdonia National Park has activities for all sorts including whitewater rafting, horse riding, climbing and wild swimming. For gentle strolls, the National Trust-managed Cregennan Lakes are about five miles west of Dolgellau on the slopes of Cadair ldris, and the flat Mawddach Trail between Dolgellau and Barmouth along the Mawddach estuary has hiking and biking paths with cracking views. Cregannan also has two lakes for fly and worm fishing, one for brown trout and the other for brown and blue. Head to the coast for Barmouth and Fairbourne, both uncrowded and with miles of golden sand. Barmouth Harbour, at the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary, is where to bag a boat for sea and fishing trips, while Fairbourne is a big pull for windsurfers and other watersport sorts. If sightseeing both seasides, take the Fairbourne Steam Railway from Fairbourne to Penrhyn Point and then the passenger ferry to Barmouth.
