General

  • Nifty spot for hikers, bikers and lovers of the great outdoors
  • A very viewsome park surrounded by woodland and farmland
  • Easy access to The Torrent Walk and Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre

Hiker, biker or both? Walk this way… Gywnedd’s Torrent Walk Campsite is a Snowdonia mecca for mountain bikers and walkers with trails for both all around. The Torrent Walk is only 500 metres from the campsite and the famed Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre is in the area with acres more walking trails around it. And, for the truly hardy, the mountain Cadair Idris and its three trails can be tackled nearby.

Back at base, Torrent Walk Campsite is surrounded on all sides by viewsome woodland and farmland, with pitches on a sheltered level field. The camping field is adjacent to the site buildings: toilet and shower block, disabled facilities, washing machines and drying facilities; campers have access to a fridge too. There’s also a power wash for bikes and equipment, and the Torrent Walk team can store your bike for you if needed.

For stocking up, the garage just up the road sells essentials and camping gaz, a shop and café within a five-minute walk, and a Co-op and a wide range of shops in the village of Dolgellau a mile and a half away.

Cooking your own dinner? Campfires are allowed on site: buy a firestarting kit from staff to spark up.

The location is superb with picturesque views. The pitches were of a good size. There was plentiful hot water in the showers.

    Cleanliness was acceptable

    Disliked:

For such a large site there were only two toilet cubicles and two showers in the gents (plus a disabled facility), on one day one toilet was blocked (which could happen anywhere) reducing the facilities to a single toilet.

It was quiet and the showers were really nice and hot. It was great we could light a camp fire at night too.

    Disliked:

The large bins were overflowing. Having to walk past them in the morning was not pleasant and they smelt awful.
The hairdryer in the toilets was less powerful than the hand dryers and with there being no plugs to use your own it was as frustrating as I had to go to sleep with wet hair which is not the best in a tent. The hairdryer cost 20p, which I know is not a lot at all but when it's less than useful and there is nothing else to use, I felt ripped off.

Very noisy, over a bank holiday weekend. People were drinking, singing and shouting until very 1am. The pitch was tiny and could barely fit the tent on

Lovely area, close to Dolgellau and Barmouth. Loved that campfires were allowed using wood from the site! Fabulous weather made all the difference too.

    Disliked:

Not enough toilets / showers / sinks for the size of the site. However the ones that were there were cleaned regularly.

Loved the fact we could have a campfire and the wooden benches were a bonus.Lovely location with easy access to the coast and surrounding countryside. We were 2 couples and had pitches 14 & 15 with EHU, plenty of room.

    Disliked:

Not enough showers and toilets for a busy bank holiday weekend. £5 a day for a dog when there is not even a dog field seemed excessive. Thought the road was narrow between pitches and would have been better if one-way. Having said this none of these spoiled what was a lovely weekend.

Directions

Dolgun Uchaf is located in Snowdonia, 1.5 miles from the market town of Dolgellau, just off the A470.

From the A494 - head south west on the A494 towards the B4402. Turn left onto the A470 and then take the first left. The campsite will be on your right.

Local attractions

The mountains and trails of Snowdonia, the beaches of Barmouth and the north Wales coast, and heritage attractions like the Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway and Harlech Castle are all within about half an hour’s drive of Torrent Walk campsite, and Snowdonia National Park has activities for all sorts including whitewater rafting, horse-riding, climbing and wild swimming.

The closest activity to home is the popular Torrent Walk, a four-mile circular path following the River Clywedog through its gorge; keep an eye out for otters and lesser horseshoe bats along its route. For gentler strolls, the National Trust managed Cregennan Lakes are about five miles west of Dolgellau on the slopes of Cadair ldris, and the flat Mawddach Trail between Dolgellau and Barmouth along the Mawddach estuary has hiking and biking paths with cracking views. Cregannan also has two lakes for fly and worm fishing, one for brown trout and the other for brown and blue.

Some of the best, and handbuilt, mountain bike trails in the country are at the nearby Coed-y-Brenin – try the Falseteeth trail and dropping down The Cavity, the biggest bike feature in the forest. If you’re new to it all or you don’t have your bike with you, the swish visitor centre has bike hire and equipment.

Head to the coast for Barmouth and Fairbourne, both uncrowded and with miles of golden sand and Blue Flag awards. Beaut Barmouth Harbour, at the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary, is where to bag a boat for sea and fishing trips, while Fairbourne is a big pull for windsurfers and other watersport sorts.

If sightseeing both seasides, take the Fairbourne Steam Railway from Fairbourne to Penrhyn Point and then the passenger ferry to Barmouth. Trainspotters also have the Talyllyn Railway in the vicinity, running just over seven miles through Fathew valley, and the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways from Porthmadog and through Snowdonia National Park.

Other recommendations in and around Snowdonia include the Llanfair Slate Caverns at Harlech, being free at Italianate village and The Prisoner location Portmeirion and birdwatching at the RSPB reserve between the villages of Arthog and Friog.
