  • Stay on a working farm site in Snowdonia National Park
  • Haven for ramblers, bikers and hikers: lots of nearby trails
  • Less than half an hour’s drive from the Welsh coast beaches
You won’t want to hide among the bushes during your stay at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan Park, a family-friendly site on a working farm less than 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Dolgellau in Gwynedd – this place is all about getting out and about. In the southern reaches of Snowdonia National Park, Llwyn yr Helm is a haven for ramblers, bikers and hikers: Mawddach trail, Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk all start in Dolgellau, and Cadair Idris mountain’s Minfford Path starts less than 15 minutes from site. That’s the hikers sorted, so what about the bikers? Coed y Brenin Biking and Visitor Centre is 20 minutes away, and the fab Antur Stiniog downhill biking trails are within an hour. If you’re not much of an outdoor adventurer, there’s plenty else nearby: try plane spotting at the famous Mach Loop, ziplining at Zip World Slate Caverns or poking around the scenic Italianate village of Portmeirion – or you could make a beeline to the beaches and harbours at Fairbourne or Barmouth, where boat trips and watersports abound? Back on site, fire up the barbecue for dinner (essentials can be sorted in the on-site shop) then kick up your feet in the evening, soaking in the views of the Cadair Idris mountain range, reading, or watching a DVD borrowed from reception. If you’d prefer to venture out, there are plenty of restaurants to try within 25 minutes of the site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The campsite was brilliant. The facilities were cleanest I've seen on a campsite. Owners were lovely. Our children (6 &2) loved visiting the goats. Only slight negative i would say is there isn't as much open space for our children to run around in especially if each pitch is taken. But they managed and had a great time.

Dros y Bont Decked electric tent pitch (secluded)

Liked: Myself, my partner and our little dog stayed for the weekend. The campsite itself is so well kept and refreshing, the facilities are modern and clean with vintage touches. On our stay, When we got to reception the lady who greeted us (I didn’t manage to get her name) was so welcoming and friendly! All of the staff we spoke to whilst there were lovely! Everybody is so helpful as well. The facilities on site are honestly incredible, and deep cleaned daily! They have laundry facilities, toilets, showers and even a dog washing station, so perfect for bringing your dog along like we did! We stayed on the dos y bront pitch which was amazing. It’s slightly secluded from everybody else with a decked pitch and electric hookup. We forgot a cable for the hookup and the lovely people at reception were able to lend us one. There’s also a running stream next to the pitch which is great to fall asleep to. We had originally booked for one night but extended for another night because it was so lovely and relaxing! They also have a little where they keep farm animals- chickens and pigs. They also have goats which you can feed! This honestly was the highlight of my stay! Already thinking about planning our next stay here- honestly couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Disliked: Absoloutely nothing

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastische omgeving om te wandelen. Schitterende en rustige locatie. Zeer vriendelijk personeel. Kraaknet sanitair.

Disliked: Duur. Radio in sanitair stond zeer luid, met veel gebabbel. Gebruik van herbiciden op de paden, vind ik niet nodig.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Spacious & Level pitches, Immaculate modern facilities with both options of cubical toilets/showers & large private family shower rooms, Dish washing facilities, Laundry room with Washing machine & Dryer. Dog wash & exercise field. Children’s Play area. Friendly staff always happy to help no matter what. Great onsite shop with local produce, Animal barn with friendly animals Goats, Pigs, Chickens & Turkeys which you can feed, Pet & fresh eggs available are to buy. Site is approx 2 minutes off the main road and well sign posted.

Disliked: Disliked nothing at all about the site it was fantastic and would definitely visit again and recommend! Only points to consider when traveling too the site is that the approach from A494 is the best for the site but does include a 17% Incline. Approaching from the A470 includes a very tight bridge which definitely makes the A494 the best route.

Local attractions

Start your hols in the past with trips on the steam trains at Bala Lake Railway and Fairbourne Miniature Railway, both less than 25 minutes’ drive away, then go zooming into the future at the Centre for Alternative Technology, an eco-centre teaching sustainable development methods. Budding angler looking for your fishing fix? Turn your boat to Cregennan lakes about 25 minutes from the site to cast a line – if nothing’s biting, there are scenic trails around the lake so it won’t be a wasted trip. Stay out in the open by joining the flock for a sheep trekking experience, also 25 minutes away, or dive below the earth’s surface and clamber into a boat at award-winning King Arthur’s Labyrinth. For something a little more high culture, the Machynlleth modern art museum is half an hour from Llwyn yr Helm and is well worth a poke around.
