General

  • Stay on a working farm site in Snowdonia National Park
  • Haven for ramblers, bikers and hikers: lots of nearby trails
  • Less than half an hour’s drive from the Welsh coast beaches

You won’t want to hide among the bushes during your stay at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan Park, a family-friendly site on a working farm less than 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Dolgellau in Gwynedd – this place is all about getting out and about.

In the southern reaches of Snowdonia National Park, Llwyn yr Helm is a haven for ramblers, bikers and hikers: Mawddach trail, Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk all start in Dolgellau, and Cadair Idris mountain’s Minfford Path starts less than 15 minutes from site. That’s the hikers sorted, so what about the bikers? Coed y Brenin Biking and Visitor Centre is 20 minutes away, and the fab Antur Stiniog downhill biking trails are within an hour.

If you’re not much of an outdoor adventurer, there’s plenty else nearby: try plane spotting at the famous Mach Loop, ziplining at Zip World Slate Caverns or poking around the scenic Italianate village of Portmeirion – or you could make a beeline to the beaches and harbours at Fairbourne or Barmouth, where boat trips and watersports abound?

Back on site, fire up the barbecue for dinner (essentials can be sorted in the on-site shop) then kick up your feet in the evening, soaking in the views of the Cadair Idris mountain range, reading, or watching a DVD borrowed from reception. If you’d prefer to venture out, there are plenty of restaurants to try within 25 minutes of the site.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 ($0.37) applies for the use of the shower.

The site was quiet, bell tent was clean, warm and cosy. We loved the kitchen/shed with a hob, fridge and kitchen utensils. Showers was hot and powerful. They are currently starting to build a new shower block ready for 2020.
Bbq/fire bowl was great with a lovely view. Staff was friendly and chatty. We loved our stay.

Campsite was lovely and clean. Owners were very friendly and welcoming and helpful. We stayed in a bell tent glamping. And the tent and facilities were gorgeous. Lots to do around the area.the bed inside the glamping tent was so comfy. And the owners have really put alot of thought into all the little bits inside the tent we were provided with eye masks. Ear plugs and hot water bottles. Toilet and shower facilities very clean. Will definitely be staying again.

Not so much a dislike but as previously stated by owners against other parties reviews that shower facilities are due for revamp. Still remain functional, serviceable and most importantly maintained/cleaned by owners regularly.

We stayed at this site for 4 nights having originally booked for 2. Despite being the summer holidays, the site wasn't busy and therefore we had no problems with noise.
The touring pitches are decent grass, although this might get soft if you have lots of wet weather. There were only a couple of hard standing touring pitches. The bulk of the hard standing pitches were taken up with seasonal bookings.
The site managers were really helpful and always around when we needed them even when the reception was closed.
The location in the valley is very nice, there's no road noise (a pet pieve) because there's no big roads close to site, the only noise is from the stream running down the hill. You're close to Dolgellau which has a good selection of pubs (can heartily recommend going to the Torrent Walk pub for burger night on a monday) and couple of takeaways and a Co-Op for supplies.
If you fancy climbing Snowdon, that's over an hour by car, but there are lots of places closer to walk. Definitely visit the falls by the narrow bridge along the B4416.

    Disliked:

There's a few things to note, but nothing we'd consider a deal breaker.
    1) the access road is small and windy, particularly the narrow bridge on the B4416
    2) the toilet block is small (2 cubicles for men, 2 for women and 2 unisex showers), they are fine and clean, but need updating. They also require 2x 20p for a 6min shower. This goes with the age of the toilet block and hopefully when/if it's renovated, this payment system should be removed.
Also, the attached washing up facilities are two sinks on the outside with just a small canopy. Not ideal if it's raining/cold. Again something they might change during renovations.
    3) Internet - we found mobile signal to be poor (Virgin/3), so if you rely on your phone for satnav, best to get Google Maps to download the area's maps to your device before you go.
They do have free Wifi in reception (with very comfortable sofas) which you can use, and if reception is closed, you can stand outside and use it if you're desperate for that online fix.

Lovely bell tent exactly as pictured. Spotlessly clean with great facilities. Managers were so friendly and welcoming and responded quickly to email query. Campsite itself was quite small and so lovely and peaceful at night and the bell tent feels a bit separate from the rest of the site (a bit like king of the campsite :) ).

    Disliked:

Only tiny thing was the toilet/shower facilities were a bit dated and only a couple for each gender but were clean and functional. We used them at non busy times and didn't have to wait.
