Fronalchen Caravan Park: Spacious grass pitches

General

  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40

How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd.

Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around Snowdonia...?

If this all sounds a tad too hectic, ta very much, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended.

Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

A cable measuring at least 20 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Fronalchen Caravan Park is fantastic, myself and my girlfriend can’t praise this place highly enough.

Myself and my girlfriend both work in education so we tend to go for smaller sites and this was the largest site we had ever stayed at by a long way. We didn’t really know what to expect but wow…we were impressed!

The site is large however it is extremely well organised and there are plenty of facilities for all campers staying onsite. We booked the site last minute as our initial holiday plans changed we paid £100 for 5 nights (£20 per night) and it was definitely worth it. Upon arrival there is a reception desk/office area which is manned from about 14:30-21:30. The staff all wear a uniform which makes it immediately obvious who to ask for help should you need it. When we arrived we were greeted and the lady who welcomed us explained where everything is on the site and even recommended some local walks and activities.

The site is extremely well organised. At the top of the site is a toilet block, shower block, washing up area, drinking water tap and the office. At the bottom of the site (where we chose to pitch) there is another toilet block and there are also chemical portaloos dotted all over the site. The toilets and showers were always clean and always had hand towels and soap at the ready. There was hardly ever a wait for the showers (longest I waited was 5 minutes).

We booked a non-electric grass tent pitch and we decided to pitch at the bottom of the field overlooking the mountains. This was a lovely quiet location and would highly recommend this area for couples or a family who wants a bit more privacy, we set up our own back garden behind the tent! Much to our delight, you’re allowed your own fire pit and barbecue at this site. We have our own a fire pit however the site does also offer fire pits which you can rent was due on site. The site also sells kindling and logs for your fire pit or barbecue.

Everyone on the site, staff and fellow campers alike, we’re really friendly and respectful. Quiet hours were followed and there were no groups on the site causing issues.

We honestly cannot say enough good things about this site and would love to stay again in the future.

    Disliked:

Our only comment would be that there are slightly less female toilets in the main blocks located at the top and bottom of the field. This means sometimes a slightly longer wait time for the ladies. With that being said my girlfriend only had to wait 5 minutes maximum. Not a complaint by any means just something to bear in mind.

    Everything was cleaned regularly.
The view is wonderful and we were lucky enough to find a place next to the river.
It is very useful that there are couple of toilets at different point of the site.

    Disliked:

There is nothing we disliked, but we might recommend to have more showers.

The campsite is set on a single field in a lovely valley with a swimmable stream to one side. The ladies operating the site are friendly.

    Disliked:

The description 'back to basics' is very accurate. The facilities are all of a temporary nature and very limited in number.

The site has a single pod containing 4 x showers (when you can get one the water is at least warm). Toilets are mainly 2 x porta cabins, one located at each end of the site. For the gents there are a total of 3 x cubicles. Portaloos are dotted around the edge of the field.

The whole site has a single pot wash sink...!

Water is via a single tap at the main entrance or waterbutts dotted around the field.

The electric hook up area is a free for all with a 'pitch where you like' approach. If you pitch up and feel that you are away from the neighbours, don't be suprised to find the gap filled later. This is a problem for those with Campers or Motor homes as leaving site for the day is likely to result in your pitch being occupied in your absence. We did see people leaving chairs or boxes in the gap, but it's not an approach all would be comfortable doing.

We visited another site locally (Rhaeadr Nantcol waterfall £11 per person x 2, plus £5 for electricity = £27 per night) This site had all the basic features you would expect but in purpose built facilties and greater quantities, which by comparison makes £30 per night for a camper with hook up at Fronalchen a bit much for what was provided.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on more than one heritage narrow gauge railway, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base.

Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop.

Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
