Fronalchen Caravan Park: Stunning views of Cadair Idris

General

  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40

How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd.

Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around Snowdonia...?

If this all sounds a tad too hectic, ta very much, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended.

Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

A cable measuring at least 20 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

Reception is unmanned after 9 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Friendly, family run site, well looked after. Main showers and toilets, and portacabins on the field cleaned regularly. Booked a week and stayed an extra five nights. Good location for walking with some good walks available from the site. We were on our own and had a lovely pitch on the end but good for groups of campers as lots of space and no defined pitches so groups can pitch together and make good use of the space available.

This Campsite is placed in a beautiful location, with fantastic local walks and access to the river. Loads of room on the site and well maintained toilets and showers.

Portaloos round the site were handy for those during the night treks to the loo!

    We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

    Disliked:

Would have loved more sink areas for use especially for brushing teeth and washing pots etc.

I think the site has a lot of potential with a couple of extra bits added. Maybe a toilet/shower washing up block down the other end would be good.

The amazing views, fantastic facilities (nice showers and toilets) and the river running along the campsite.

We were unfortunate enough to be pitched next to a very loud family playing music until after 11pm. Perhaps a courtesy patrol around quiet time might be a good idea?

A really simple and easy site to use. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The toilets and showers were basic but clean and better than most that I have experienced whilst camping. There were no designated pitches so, whist finding a spot can feel like a bit of a 'free-for-all', this actually made the process easier, as we had more choice of where to pitch the tent.

    Disliked:

The generator for the electric was a little audible at night but this wasn't too much of a problem

Friendly staff, well run site. Fires allowed. Lots of space. Toilets well distributed so if you are far from the main block you can use a portaloo. Stream for paddling fun over a stile. A big hill for sliding down looked like great fun for the kids who were there every night! Logs can be bought and you can borrow a fire pit for free if you want one.

    Disliked:

There could be more places for washing and teeth.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on more than one heritage narrow gauge railway, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base.

Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop.

Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.

Must see

  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (11.1 miles)
  • CADW - Harlech Castle (13.0 miles)
