  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Wide open space, no real limit on pitch size, nice toilet block, and great location for Mid-Wales.

Disliked Difficult to criticise, pitch next to us were very noisy, there were dealt with but on there final night they were noisy again, not sites fault, but still very frustrating that others can be so non respectful of others.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Excellent modern and clean facilities.

Disliked I didn't realise that it was sandwiched between two A roads so there was a little road noise occasionally. It's not a campsite for those who want to go back to nature.

Liked What a wonderful campsite! ❤️

This was one of the most memorable parts of our trip to Wales. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing – children playing together, adults chatting, laughter all around the campsite and such a lovely sense of community. 🥰

There were no TVs, no social media, just people enjoying the outdoors, talking, laughing and making memories. The children were having the best time, and it was honestly beautiful to see.

The campsite itself is surrounded by beautiful Welsh nature and is a perfect base for exploring the area.

We came here for a few nights and left with so many wonderful memories. It felt warm, friendly and genuinely special.

Thank you for such a beautiful stay. We would love to come back! ❤️🏕️

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Responded to electrical hook up problem very quickly and resolved the issue promptly. New toilet and shower block was clean and well looked after.
Very peaceful campsite with access to a small river, ideal for going for a dip on a hot day.
Location is within 30 minutes of the coast and there are plenty of attractions in the local area. Co-Op and Spar supermarkets situated in Dolgellau itself which is not far from the campsite.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely, well maintained, flat site, situated in stunning mountainous surroundings. The people running the site were very helpful and attentive - we called them out a couple of times and they were very happy to help, which we loved! The site was nice and quiet during the week, getting slightly busier at the weekend but it never felt too busy. Toilets and showers were clean and tidy. We loved the little river running through the back of the site, we even saw a Mink fishing in the water. There's no on-site shop, fridge or charging facilities but there is a shop very close by that sells all the basics and does a decent breakfast bap!

Disliked Only very MINOR gripes but...
1) The washing up facilities were somewhat lacking - one sink with a single cold water tap. Not a big problem for us as we took all the kit to wash up in camp.
2) There is only one water tap by the entrance. Again not really a problem for us (as we always bring a festival/beach trolley) but worth noting.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
