  • Scenic back-to-basics site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne
  • Famed Mach Loop within 10-minute drive; Portmeirion Gardens within 40
How does a spacious, back-to-basics site sound? How about if it were inside a spectacular national park, with stunning views of the mountains? If you answered ‘pretty fab, ta very much’, get motors running all the way to Fronalchen Caravan Park, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Dolgellau in Gwynedd. Ramblers, hikers, bikers and riders are well served hereabouts, as the site’s in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park: Torrent Walk (a four-mile circular route along the River Clywedog gorge) starts less than five minutes away and the mountain biking tracks of Coed-y-Brenin are within half an hour. It's about 20 minutes from here to pony trekking excursions too... surely one of the most photogenic ways to venture around this part of the world...? If this all sounds a tad too hectic, slow things down a notch with a lazy beach day. There are lengthy sandy stretches in Fairbourne and Barmouth (both 20 minutes from base), where hitting the waves on a surfboard or signing up for a fishing trip are highly recommended. Fancy a few zero-fuss days instead? Retreat back to base, where there’s little to distract from gorgeous views of Cadair Idris (hikes start around 40 minutes away) and the mountains around it, and there’s lots of room for kickabouts, dog walks, cosy campfires by the riverbank and leisurely barbecues.

What customers say

Spacious site with great mountain views & riverside spot. Friendly staff, clean, modern facilities (good showers!). Some note lack of hot wash-up water & dated portaloos, but upgrades are happening. Campfires OK, buy logs. Peaceful, though occasional road/camper noise reported.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Its a very open field you can pitch up anywhere around the edge, loved that the stream was nust behind us and was a lush white noise to get to sleep.
Looks like the toilet shower block was pretty new
The area is pretty secluded but has a lovely walk around some stunning waterfalls
There's a village thats about a 40 min walk

Disliked The toilet and shower block could have been bigger with the amount of people in the field, the potaloos in the field smell
We had a pretty rude encounter with the farmer/owner, we threw our non recycling bin bag away in the general waste (which had mostly kitchen towel in it due to cleaning up rain puddles in the tent) and we held the bin lid open for him, he gave the worse scowl and launched whatever he had in to the bin, I understand hes probably encountered alot of people leaving behind mess, but we stand by the leave no trace and always clean up after ourselves.
Also mind the super steep hill on entrance and exit

Disliked The only bad thing I would say is no hot water to wash up but we just boiled water and did it tent side

Disliked The bins were overflowing and bin bags on the piled up on the ground. Either need more bins or somehow more enforcement on recycling.

Facilities needed a clean- the portaloos were cleaned in the evening so assuming someone went into the shower area but didn't seem like it when we went in.

No staff to be seen throughout the day.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked On arriving the views were breathtaking of the mountains. The check in was simple with a QR code to scan and fill out a quick form. The site was quiet and not over filled which was lovely as we came away to get away from the busy lives we lead. It was lovely to sit outdoors and listen to the wildlife and watch the farm animals roam free round the campsite. The site was close to amineties and a small town.

Disliked On arrival coming into the campsite the site could have been tidied up a little, it was overgrown near the house onsite and the bins were overflowing. Also on site the bins were that full there was bags just thrown at the side, they were only emptied once on our stay of 5nights. The staff office onsite to buy wood from we only saw open ones which was a shame as that was the only time we meet anyone that worked onsite.

Not the campsite fault but other campers arrived and were smoking substances which were potent when walking past to use the toilet facilities and also playing load music.

Also there was only one sink outside to wash pots which was cold water. This wasn’t an issue due to the site not been busy while we were there but at peak season could see this been an issue. Also this could be sheltered to prevent getting wet while washing your pots and also having more surface space to place pots down once washed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Quiet site, lovely area and views. Simple campsite, tidy and clean toilet and shower block.
Nice wild swimming along side the camping area. Nearby to a small village.
Military planes flew over on the way to kear by mach loop, great for my plane spotter son. Asked to extend our stay will there and was able to. very really friendly staff.

Disliked Last night of our stay the site was very busy, and camper pitched up in a small 1 man tent behind ours, squeezed between us and the fence. Kept us awake till late due to being only afew feet away from our tent. Nothing to do both the site though, just on of those things.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Fantastic back to basics campsite. Very welcoming staff at reception, made us feel very welcome. Huge tent pitches, we were able to pitch bell tent with car next to it. Although there is a main toilet block, they are at the top of the field. They have portaloos dotted at regular intervals which were cleaned regularly. Beautiful views and quiet site

Liked views were lovely noisy campers near need stricter rules for music etc

Disliked the road was very annoying I know it can’t be helped but a real shame couldn’t get tv maybe my set up

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry that noise from nearby campers affected your stay. We do have a strict quiet time between 10:30pm and 7am, and we’ll continue to make sure this is clearly communicated and enforced.

Unfortunately, road noise is outside our control. TV reception is also generally available on site.

TLC needed with a few cleanliness and fire safety tweaks would help.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Scenery. Seeing family groups and friends enjoying themselves. Noise reduced about 11. 👍 Toulets and washbasins were fine.

Disliked Showers in need of a good clean - lots of old grass and mucky edges. Had to scrub the floor before I could shower.
Couldn’t find anywhere to empty grey waste. Had to empty into the grass by my pitch. Caravans/tents too close together - fire regs not adhered to. Elsan point left a lot to be desired - opened the lid to be looking straight down to the bottom of a pit. VERY basic.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry the facilities didn't meet your expectations during your stay. Our shower facilities are new this year and are cleaned regularly, so we’re disappointed to hear they were found in this condition. We also take site safetyseriously and don't disregard fire safety requirements. We will, however, review the points you’ve raised with the team.

Local attractions

Guests with one foot in the past will find plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start by poking around the ruins of Cymer Abbey, 10 minutes’ drive away, before diving into ancient Welsh legend beneath the earth in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, chugging along tracks on one of the local heritage narrow gauge railways, and exploring the spectacularly sited Harlech Castle, all within 45 minutes of base. Prefer the wind in your hair? Pick up speed on the ziplines at Zip World Slate Caverns and on the downhill biking trails at Antur Stiniog, both about 40 minutes away, or stick closer to home (10 minutes) to keep eyes peeled for low-flying jets at the famed Mach Loop. Outdoorsy types may want to travel the 20 minutes to Cregennan Lakes instead, where there are lots of trails to traipse along, as well as two lakes for trout fishing. Not your bag? The subtropical Portmeirion Gardens 40 minutes away are an absolute must for budding horticulturalists – be sure to explore this ‘Gwyltt’ (Welsh for wildwood) thoroughly, as there are secret gardens, a derelict castle and even a graveyard to root out.
