  • Family-friendly north Wales site 10 minutes' drive from Mold
  • Rhyl half an hour’s drive; Eryri National Park/Snowdonia 45 minutes
  • Set amid ancient woodland; logs for campfires available to buy on site
Tree Tops and Train Tracks, in Flintshire, may well prove to be a great base for your exploration of north eastern Wales, whether you’re after hilly walks in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (on whose outskirts the site is located), coastal attractions (Prestatyn beach is a half-hour’s drive away) or historic structures like Chirk Castle (45 minutes). Oh, and not forgetting Eryri National Park (also known as Snowdonia, 45 minutes). If you just can’t wait for your next dose of forest bathing, this family-friendly spot is the place for you, set within 18 acres of ancient woodland inhabited by butterflies, hares and bats, plus assorted birdlife, with a former railway track (hence the name) running through it. Stroll through the wildflowers and hay meadows in Coed Y Felin North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve (five minutes), or lace up your boots for a challenging hike, perhaps up Moel Arthur (10 minutes) or Penycloddiau (20 minutes), both topped by the remains of ancient hill forts. Both destinations sit along the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Trail, which you can then follow in the direction of Chepstow (southwards) or Prestatyn (to the north). When you return to base, get the campfire going (you can buy logs from friendly owners Seb and Hannah), ready to grill whatever you bought in nearby Mold (10 minutes). If you fancy a pub meal, the nearest watering hole is in the village of Nannerch (five minutes' drive, or a 15-minute stroll). The site is largely off-grid, with low-footprint facilities, including compostable toilets. There are also showers and a washing-up area.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Great place, very clean and tidy. A little different but definitely not in a bad way. The enthusiasm of the owner was infectious and nothing was too much trouble.

Disliked: Postcode wasn’t accurate making it a little hard to find.

The Sparrow Hawk rental tent (hanging)

Liked: Absolutely excellent. Great idea having tents in the trees and not just a novalty. Warmer and drier and space below tent to sit out of the rain. Communal space is great with a large outdoor bldg to sit under and free firepits. Excellent facilities also and spotlessly clean. We absolutely loved it and will be back. The owner is a top guy also!

The Buzzard rental tent (hanging)

Liked: Everything. Site was amazing facilities great. The chill out area with 4 fires or turn in to bbq’s the covered area with a hammock seats air bag seats the games with the large chess ♟️ game. Shower was great. The tent we stayed in was massive 3 layers and around 15ft up between 3 trees. Still in awe. The hosts made sure we had everything and were very welcoming.

Disliked: Need a bigger sign as you turn in off the main road as we missed it. 😂

Non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Wow what an amazing new site to visit - excellent well thought out eco friendly site with a wonderful family running it - very polite and helpful and really had time to talk to you enjoyed our stay massively. Great shows to and clean facilities.

Disliked: Love the no cars next to pitch rule makes for a really safe environment but found it difficult transporting goods to and from pitch - could be great if a 1 way system added where you can quickly unload car next to site and then car must be moved straight away once empty and not allowed back on until departing - this could be tricky in bad weather

Non-electric grass tent pitch (small)

Liked: I loved the site so much. Had the loveliest of welcomes and Seb was great making me feel welcome and showing me the fabulous off grid facilities. I loved the set up, they have created such a beautiful friendly space and everyone camping was great and respectful.

Disliked: Maybe the signage could have been a little clearer to the site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked: Wonderful warm welcome on arrival by Seb and his family. The location is absolutely stunning spacious and very well thought out and set out. The communal fire pit area is fab and great for chatting and getting to know the other chilled out campers. Toilet facilities were cleaned regularly all new and fresh as well as doing their bit for the environment. Little herb garden. The atmosphere. The beautiful meadow feeling of the flowers and and trees very pleasing to the eye in fact you can’t look anywhere without thinking wow. The grass on the pitches very well kept and cared for. The fact my five year old grandson could run around safely and play with the other children under the huge well constructed gazebo. The fact no cars are allowed next to the pitches maintains the natural feel and even more so allows the little ones to amble about without the risk of traffic. Well worth the short walk from the car parking area next to camp. I’ve given five stars for Wi-Fi as the 4G is really good in the area. The attention given by Seb getting to know his guests and making sure everyone was happy. Thanks for a wonderful camping experience.

The Swallow Tentsile rental tent (hanging)

Liked: Amazing hanging tent and facilities. Great campsite. Friendly owners always happy to have a chat. Tent handing from trees was so comfortable and my son loved it. Would defiantly book again. Close to facilities like pub for food and shops and supermarkets only a short 10 mins drive away.

Local attractions

For a day at the beach, head to Rhyl (half an hour’s drive), where a vast (at least at low tide) expanse of sand ought to make the kids happy, whether they choose to dip in and out of the water, fly kites or build sandcastles. The SeaQuarium includes an outdoor habitat for harbour seals. Founded by the Romans, Chester (35 minutes) is home to Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatre, plus well-preserved city walls. The ornate Eastgate Clock sits where the entrance to the ancient Roman fortress once stood, while the Dewa Roman Discovery Centre displays artefacts unearthed locally. Snowdonia may be an active person’s dream destination, with hiking trails of varying levels of difficulty, mountain-biking at Antur Stiniog, paddleboarding and canoeing on Llyn Tegid lake (which is also a popular spot for fishing), plus outfits like Zip World Fforest and Zip World Llechwedd.
