Tree Tops and Train Tracks, in Flintshire, may well prove to be a great base for your exploration of north eastern Wales, whether you’re after hilly walks in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Park (on whose outskirts the site is located), coastal attractions (Prestatyn beach is a half-hour’s drive away) or historic structures like Chirk Castle (45 minutes). Oh, and not forgetting Eryri National Park (also known as Snowdonia, 45 minutes). If you just can’t wait for your next dose of forest bathing, this family-friendly spot is the place for you, set within 18 acres of ancient woodland inhabited by butterflies, hares and bats, plus assorted birdlife, with a former railway track (hence the name) running through it. Stroll through the wildflowers and hay meadows in Coed Y Felin North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve (five minutes), or lace up your boots for a challenging hike, perhaps up Moel Arthur (10 minutes) or Penycloddiau (20 minutes), both topped by the remains of ancient hill forts. Both destinations sit along the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Trail, which you can then follow in the direction of Chepstow (southwards) or Prestatyn (to the north). When you return to base, get the campfire going (you can buy logs from friendly owners Seb and Hannah), ready to grill whatever you bought in nearby Mold (10 minutes). If you fancy a pub meal, the nearest watering hole is in the village of Nannerch (five minutes' drive, or a 15-minute stroll). The site is largely off-grid, with low-footprint facilities, including compost toilets. There are also showers and a washing-up area.

The Swallow Tentsile tenda para aluguel (suspenso)

Gostou The campsite is lovely. Lots of space, great facilities and honestly working on being eco-friendly. We stayed in the Swallow and it was ideal for three people. We didn't use camping mats, just our sleeping bags. In colder weather you would probably want a thin mat for heat insulation.

We only needed one night of accommodation and we were grateful we could stay here instead of a hotel.

Have already recommended this to friends with kids who live in Chester.

Não gostou If you're coming with children warn them that the playground at the start of the drive-way is not for guests. It's not in the listing, but my son got excited when he saw the trampoline.

Gostou Pitches were lovely, one of the best campsites we have stayed in. Communal area has an area with a roof which is appreciated when staying in the UK. Nice and quiet and well laid out. Small site and really good for families.

Gostou Lovely, friendly owners, the place was clean and beautiful! can only imagine it in better weather and more into the summer. Loved the communal fire pit area and covered parts, so even in bad weather, we were able to be outside. Also, an amazing Indian 3 mins down the road :)

Não gostou The composting toilets were a shock to the system, but that's me and not the site. They were explained very thoroughly and demonstrated.

Gostou Thank you so much! For our first trip camping we had the most amazing time. The campsite itself was easy to find, super clean, and had everything you needed and more. The owners were very helpful when contacted prior to arriving and very welcoming on arrival. What a fantastic find that we will definitely be visiting again for a longer stay.

Não gostou Unfortunately, some of the trees had fallen down and lots of the forest was closed off. We can’t wait to come back and explore more of the site.

Founded by the Romans, Chester (35 minutes) is home to Britain’s largest Roman amphitheatre, plus well-preserved city walls.
