  • Friendly site on a farm in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Just over a mile's walk to pubs in Talybont-on-Usk
  • Meet the farm animals on site; bike hire available
Bed down in the Brecon Beacons National Park – and have yourself a slice of proper Powys farm life while you’re at it too. Coity Bach is a welcoming and friendly rural site on a farm just over a mile from the pretty little village of Talybont-on-Usk. Budding farmhands can get stuck into various tasks on site, helping out with the goats and horses, while those in search of more relaxing times can simply settle down in a serene setting for idle hours on site. Either way, it’s worth staying awake until after dark if you can: there’s some great stargazing to be done here, and barbecues and campfires are both allowed to keep you warm while you do just that. Off site, this is a popular place for hill walking, and town wanders are easily accessible at nearby Abergavenny, Hay-on-Wye and Crickhowell. It's excellent terrain for cycling too: hire a bike on site or have your own spruced up at the cycle shop in the village. As for sprucing yourself up too, communal amenities on site include showers, toilets, a laundry area and a drying room; there are also charging and recycling facilities, and local produce for sale. If you are indeed planning a barbecue or picnic (or just need snacks) the nearest big town for supplies is Brecon, 15 minutes’ drive away. To eat out, four pubs are within a mile and a half at Talybont-on-Usk.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: The view from the camping field is one of the best we’ve had at a campsite in Brecon Beacons. The area is extremely quiet and remote. We enjoyed the local town and canal where we went for an afternoon walk. - Beautiful natural surroundings - Lovely view - Nice and peaceful (partly because only 2 other guests were staying on the camping field) - Lovely friendly owners who did check in with us a few times during our stay

Disliked: Honest review… When we arrived it was unclear where we should park/camp. We parked up near some buildings and had a walk around to try and see. Nobody was around and the field which we assumed was for camping was extremely steep with a herd of cows in (including a Bull). There was no signage at all. We were unsure if we should go in so we phoned the owner. They had popped out and advised us to go in and help ourselves to a “level pitch”. The field has an extremely steep and not very well maintained track, probably only really suitable for a 4x4. The cows that were in the field seemed friendly but were quite intimidating as nobody else was around. Kyle put the cows in the top field when he returned. During this time we met some of the workers who helped round up the cows. They seemed to be drunk and had bottles of beer and were using inappropriate language. The following days the cows constantly escaped back into the camping field and made us nervous during our stay. We witnessed some of the workers tipping rubbish bins onto a smouldering heap down in the farm area which could be seen clearly from the camping field. This seemed to consist of all sorts including plastic (shopping bags) which let off a black smelly smoke. At one point we heard a gas canister explode on the fire. - Camping field was not level. The 50 level pitches mentioned in previous reviews were not existent. We saw maybe 10 good level spots. - Bathrooms and showers were not well maintained - Lots of junk left around in toilets/laundry room and generally all over the farm - The farm generally seems like a bit of a health hazard and things didn’t seem very safe to use - The fridge mentioned wasn’t working and seemed to be very old and dirty. - No phone charging area as mentioned - Only 1 in 2 showers had hot water. Shower was very small and had no changing area. Shower is gas powered and hard to work. - Designated areas for washing up facilities are pretty much non-existent. The one they do have has no working hot water and as you can see on the photos isn’t at all clean. - No drinking water taps labelled, ended up drinking from the bathroom sinks - Expensive for what you get We would consider this place a “wild camping field” rather than a full campsite with facilities. Maybe perfect for a short stay where you won’t be spending much time at the site. The adverts are misleading and need updating to reflect the true condition of this site. This farm clearly was a nice place to stay at one point based on previous reviews and looking back on previous social media events/photos. It seems the adverts being used are from previous years when they used to be a working farm. This is no longer the case, it just has a few animals around. This place has great potential but needs some time and money spent on it to bring up to standard to be listed as a campsite with full facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everyone who worked there was super lovely and helpful. The views were amazing and it was the perfect to get our boy started camping with us. Sleeping with the free roaming cows, sheep and the cheeky little pony. There were also pigs, these were fenced off just behind us but you could still stroke them and our son helped them feed the pigs in the morning too. We got a puncture on the way and didn't have time to go shop beforehand and the staff were more than happy to give me some of their milk so I could have my morning tea too!

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: Great Views, amazing hospitality, felt so welcome on the farm. Allowed to pitch where we liked, left to our own devices if we wanted but also offered loads of great advice on the area. Fire Pit and food from the farm- what more could you ask for! I would definitely recommend staying here. The facilities were basic but always clean, saw them being cleaned daily just after busy periods as well so no issues here! Also a compost loo near the top field if you were up the hill which was very handy! Walk in to town was fine - the walk back up the hill was a little more challenging but you can normally park in the village if you want to drive - also one of the pubs had a car park. Village shop with essentials and local breakfast sausage's etc. I understand the 'at your own risk' entering the camping fields in a car but my Hyundai i10 Automatic managed it in a low gear setting- slow and steady wins the race. This was in drier conditions though. You can also take a walk straight off the campsite on to the hills behind, this was so quiet didn't see a soul which was lush! Just be prepared that not all the paths are maintained fully so may be a little wild. All in all - me and my boyfriend loved staying at Coity Bach Farm and will definitely be returning!

Non-electric grass tent pitch (mountain view)

Liked: Well what can I say! Ceri & Kyle was amazing to us from start to finish! Unfortunately for us we had taken a tent that wasn’t waterproof and woke up floating in the morning😂. Ceri and Kyle was both incredible and did everything possible to help us with the flood in our tent. Unfortunately we had to end our stay short after just one night due to all of our clothing being soaked however Within minutes of texting Ceri Kyle was at the tent helping us. They loaned us an air bed and helped us with our tent. Ceri had kindly offered us alternative accommodation however our party was too big but this was a huge act of kindness from them both. The field we pitched in was lovely and the view was even better. We didn’t stay long enough to use all the facilities due to the bad weather but this was no fault of the owners. These guys are probably the kindest and most genuine people we have ever met and nothing was too much of an ask from them! Beautiful walks local to the farm. Great views and Ceri offers breakfast, hog roast and even pizzas. We will certainly be booking back here but with a waterproof tent! Keep up the good work guys your both amazing and so welcoming! We can’t wait to see you in the future!

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Being in the Brecon Beacons, this is naturally excellent hillwalking territory – you can head straight out onto paths directly from the farm, or ask your hosts for tips on local routes including the Taff Trail, Henry Vaughan walk and Usk Valley Walk. If you’re trying to tick off a mountain or two, make a beeline for Pen y Fan (20 minutes’ drive) or the Sugar Loaf (35 minutes) For a bigger variety of alfresco activities, head to Llangorse Lake (20 minutes) for rock climbing, watersports and horse riding outings. Closer by, Cantref Adventure Farm (15 minutes) has riding lessons and horseback treks, plus all sorts of family antics including crazy golf, tractor rides and Europe’s longest sledge ride (oh, and pig racing…) The natural scenery around here is spectacular, of course – and the towns are pretty too. Crickhowell (20 minutes), Abergavenny (half an hour) and bookshop-filled Hay-on-Wye (35 minutes) are all worth a wander.
