Tipis at Ponty: Mary Yurt

General

  • Scenic, secluded adults-only site close to the Powys/Shropshire border
  • Vyrnwy Lake and Pistyll Rhaeadr within a half-hour drive
  • Next to the River Cain for fishing; kitchen and firepits on site

Ahhh, Powys. It’s got a lot going for it – being in the scenic wilds of Wales yet so close to England’s stunning county of Shropshire. But what it’s also fab for? Tipis at Ponty, an adults-only site on a pretty six-acre smallholding by the border between two nations.

Access to attractions and activities aside, this park’s immediate location is worth the visit alone: it’s flanked by a three-acre paddock and the banks of the River Cain, where you’re welcome to fish or just settle in and admire the gorgeous views up the valley.

Seating and firepits are provided, so there’s always a comfy, warm spot out in the open air, and to keep the peaceful vibe intact it’s a vehicle-free site with wheelbarrows supplied to help you cart your kit around the place. Well-behaved dogs are allowed to come along for your break too.

All in all, the facilities are fantastic hereabouts: they include two bespoke wetrooms and a kitchenette that’s kitted out with fridges, freezer, a microwave and a washing-up area along with a little ‘honesty box’ shop selling various products prepped by in-house chefs Ian and Jane. Themed meals are occasionally offered during busy periods on site.

Guests are also welcome to use the Sunset Shack in the upper copse, a cosy hideaway with seating for both dining and relaxing alongside a cooking area with a double gas hob. As the name suggests, this is the place to go for top views of the spectacular sunsets that often appear around these parts.

Meanwhile, the village of Llansantffraid (just under a mile away) is your go-to for mini supermarkets, pubs, a chip shop and a curry house.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

Cosy atmosphere throughout, close location close to pubs, fire pits for each pitch. Communal kitchen with fridge and kettle etc was a godsend, as was the honesty box for the firepit wood. The showers and toilets were modern and immaculate.

The little sunset lodge with the sofas was a really nice touch and a lovely place to relax.

    Absolutely everything!

We booked this last minute and what a great, little, spontaneous trip it turned out to be! The cabin was great and the views are even better!

Ian and Jane were the perfect hosts - we cannot fault them. We received such a warm welcome and informative explanation about the site. The little touches in the cabin, the on-site shop and Saturday pizza night were great!

It’s a little slice of heaven in Wales!

It was genuinely unbelievable, a campsite of just 6 pitches would be assumed to be intimate but there was an incredible amount of privacy. Our pitch was amazing, spacious and relaxing. Our Yurt, Mary, was genuinely magical, the log fire was truly brilliant and the facilities available were clean, thorough and perfect. The location was immense, so much near by including the beautiful lake Vyrnwy. The hosts were ridiculously hospitable, cooking us fresh pizzas in their pizza oven (delicious btw).
Book this place and you'll see what I mean.

    Disliked:

Literally the only slight dislike I had was that there wasn't a cupboard for your non fridge-able food but this is very very slight as there was so much space inside to store everything.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review and constructive comments, we will take on board what you have suggested and source a cupboard for next season, many thanks again for the feedback. We look forward to welcoming you again !

The beautiful site, views, amenities, animals, and the hosts. Their eco friendly efforts are great, really align with our values of enjoying the countryside and doing no harm. The nearby villages (walking distance) have some truly wonderful pubs - the food at the Sun was exceptional. The Plas was also lovely.

    Disliked:

Nothing, this place really delivered for us we loved it. There isn't great walking right on the doorstep of the site unfortunately, not many right of ways in that bit of countryside, but if you can't drive a short distance there is spectacular places to go for a good walk.

From the manager...

Thank you for the lovely review and constructive comments!
We are working to walking all the footpaths from our site to register them on the OS app for ease for future guests , and will be approaching the local council about improving the signage. WE hope when you return there will be more obvious paths!!

Fantastic site, we stayed in a tent on pitch Daffyd. The owners Ian and Jane were super helpful, friendly and accommodating. The site layout has been very cleverly designed to make you feel that on your pitch, you are in your own little oasis. The sunset shack and communal cooking areas are another great idea. They are comfortable with great views and provided respite from the extremely hot weather and also a refuge from the rain when packing up. The kitchenette was well thought out and equipped making our stay even more pleasurable. We tried the sausages and free range eggs on offer which were exceptional. The wet rooms were immaculate and a pleasure to use.
A real gem of a find and we will certainly be returning.

Lovely small site. Great communal facilities (toilets, wet rooms, kitchen and cooking area, covered seating area). Beautiful surroundings (hills, stream, fields of sheep), helpful & welcoming owners, items available to buy such as toiletries, wood, homemade tray bakes, all site very clean, tidy & well looked after.
Don Don & Algie pitches are sheltered pitches at the bottom of the hill and next to stream and trees, great for shade and keeping out the wind. Daffyd is a great pitch for views and sunshine at top of the hill & nearer the camp facilities.
The yurt, tipi and Rita cabin look like great places to stay.

Ian and Jane were great hosts, we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. They were very accommodating with everything we needed but not intrusive. The facilities were great with a selection of homemade produce available to buy and great recommendations of places to visit nearby. We stayed on Dadfyd with incredible views over the valley and easy access to the toilet and other facilities on site. We joined in for pizza night which Jane and Ian, who are chefs, had organised on the Saturday evening with another couple and it was an idilic way to spend our final evening on the site. We will return for longer next time! Thanks again!!
