General

  • Green rural getaway in Scotland's first Fairtrade town
  • Spectacular scenery and plenty of open space
  • Manicured landscape with spacious level pitches

If you could think of something to rhyme with Aberfeldy, you might come up with your best lyrics while feeling mightily inspired by Aberfeldy Caravan Park and the gems surrounding it in the old Scottish district of Breadalbane.

Once home to famed poet Robert Burns and made more popular still by its status as the first Fairtrade town on Scotland’s map, Aberfeldy should make shopping sorts and scenery seekers break into a little song (and even a dance).

You’ve picked the right spot too if you're after a green and rural getaway: the handsomely manicured grounds and garden here provide spacious and level pitches at the park, all accessible by a clearly marked path. Then take a step through the gate on to the footpath that runs between the site and the River Tay and you’re slap bang in peaceful Scottish countryside.

When you’re not admiring the view of the River Tay or the Strath Tay landscape thick with hillsides and trees from your pitch (it’s enough to make anyone come over all poetic), the sprogs will enjoy the open space in which to run around and the well-equipped play area on site.

The site has clean shower and toilet facilities and a laundry service, along with other handy amenities, and you can bring your pup along for a plentiful helping of Scottish air too.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A pass is required to fish in the River Tay. Various pass types (daily, weekly, etc.) can be purchased from a local shop a few minutes' walk from the park.

Electricity is supplied via a smart meter with a prepaid card, this is charged at 17p per kWh. A refundable £10 deposit is required for the card which is returned along with any unused electric on departure.

The set up was well thought out, toilets not far from tent pitch, which is good with small children. Town within walking distance with lots to do and see with the kids. Our 3 children aged between 3 and 12 had a great time.

Friendly and helpful seasonal caravaners in front of the river. Made us feel very welcome.

    Disliked:

When arrived on site and met caretaker and explained we were fairly new to camping and in particular to this site. We asked if possible to get a river view and were obliged by getting pitched on the second row. Unfortunately we were not told that our pitch was right next to the entrance to the inner pitches. This was not marked by a path or sign, was simply a continuation of the grass and we assumed we had a lovely corner pitch. We pitched up, erected our tent, got everything set up and had our tea. At 8pm at night, the caretaker came over and explained we had pitched over the entrance and we would need to move everything. She was about to close the gates for the night and there were plenty empty pitches that would allow access to the inner pitches should anyone have come in late. But we were told we "should have looked at our map which clearly shows the entrance!!" it took us over an hour with a child to relocate everything as it was getting dark. For the remainder of our stay not one person used the entrance, they all used other empty pitches. The caretaker was friendly enough for the remainder of our stay advising on places to eat and things to do, but the sarcastic tone returned again at check out when we arrived 5 minutes late and although we followed the instructions to get our electricity refunded, I hadn't waited long enough for it to click and register on the card. I was then told in a sarcastic manner in front of another customer that "the instructions were clearly on the piece of paper we got at check in" we couldn't be bothered with being spoken to like 2 year old so said we would leave the remaining electricity for the next customer in that pitch.

I am sure the caretaker is sick and tired of newbies like us, but a bit more communication and kindness would ensure happy returning customers.

We were due to arrive around 18:30 after taking wrong direction we arrived at 19:15', the staff had stayed for our arrival, very warm welcome, everything was explained, and a map off where everything was. Our pitch was right next to office and about 2 mins walk to the bathroom, showers etc, the doors for these were locked via combination lock, which was great the whole bathroom block was lovely and clean and was not smelly. There was a designated area for dog walking right next to the water will definitely be staying again

Directions

Follow the A9 to Ballinluig/Aberfeldy and come off onto the A827 and continue on this road through Logierait and Grandtully. As you come into Aberfeldy, the World of Whisky Dewars Distillery is on the left and the caravan site is 200 yards along the road on the right.

Local attractions

The historic Dewar’s World of Whisky distillery is within handy walking distance from the site for tipples, tours and your fill of liquor heritage.

The vibrant highland town of Aberfeldy for shoppers and lovers of all things organic is a 10-minute walk away in one direction: get your caddy in tow if going here too, because in the other direction is a golf course within walking distance.

If you're a hill walker, join the footpath along the River Tay straight from the site which leads to an array of walking challenges; from a stroll (via a pub, naturally) or a hike up some of the landscape’s more demanding routes: the view at the end (and all the way along, in fact) will be well worth it...

Cyclists and mountain bikers have a fair bit of varying terrain to try out in the area, from the old railway path along the Rob Roy Way linking Aberfeldy and Grandtully gently taking in the sites of the area that inspired Robert Burns, to the steady climb of Castle Dow and other steeper tracks.

Must see

  • Blair Castle (10.3 miles)
  • Huntingtower Castle (19.7 miles)
  • Caithness Glass Factory and Visitor Centre (20.2 miles)
