The firepit

  • Nearly wild camping on a peaceful, 250-acre Lanarkshire farm
  • New Lanark 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow 45 minutes; Edinburgh an hour
  • Woodland pitches surrounded by fields and woodland; shared firepits
Not quite ready for full-on wild camping but keen on an adventure under canvas? One with spectacular views down the Clyde Valley, with 250 acres of woodland and fields to wander? Haste ye to Cleghorn Farm, 10 minutes’ drive northeast of the market town of Lanark, where you can have a go at “nearly wild” camping on tree-shaded grass pitches with facilities including eco-friendly humanure toilets and water for washing or cooking (please bring bottled water for drinking). There is a path up to the pitches, which can be accessed by quad bike if you’re bringing in lots of gear. Nearby are a couple of communal firepits for rustling up alfresco meals, with wood and kindling available from Cleghorn Mains farmhouse. Otherwise, you’re pretty much on your own. The fields around the site are grazed and cultivated, but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last Ice Age. You can stroll paths through the trees, or take a walk with spectacular views along Cleghorn Glen, keeping an eye out for badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the pine and beech trees. You’re very welcome to bring any family dogs to join in your holiday, but please respect the local wildlife and livestock by keeping them under control at all times. And as this is a peaceful rural hideaway, the owners ask that noise is kept to a minimum between 10pm and 7am.

Pondwood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked We liked that the campsite was small, with only 5 sites, with plenty of space inbetween, and surrounded by trees. There was a nice communal fireplace, and the site was isolated enough to feel like wild camping. There was a composting toilet, with a sink at the side to wash hands and dishes.

Disliked Be prepared to hike gear into the site from the car park, although wheel barrows are provided. Also, be aware that there is a railway line nearby, so you will hear trains. Not really dislikes, but worth a mention.

Would definitely go back and certainly recommend.

Pondwood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked Great little site that is exactly as described, as close to wild camping as you get without fully wild camping. Great communication from hosts who were really friendly and helpful.

Kids (10, 8, 6 and 5) all loved it and the dog enjoyed himself too!

From the manager: Thank you for a great review and hope the Park Run went well.

Brillant woodland wild campsite.

Solo tents and Hammocks non-electric forest floor tent pitch (solo)

Liked Quiet, near wild campsite, with friendly welcoming hosts, large communal open campfire and great views. Highly recommended!
Wee walk from car park to pitches, but easy with the provided wheelbarrows.
Few minutes drive to the town of Lanark, so plenty of shops available.

From the manager: Thanks for the great review and look forward to having you back again!

Pondwood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked Lovely facilities with cute messages on the wall.
Clean campsite.
Lovely views.
Very close to shops etc.
Lovely family and great service.

Disliked Could be more accessible by car.
Could have at least one shower but not a huge negative.
Could perhaps have WiFi however, I didnt asked when we stayed

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words. Because of the nature of the site and the fact that we are a working farm with children and animals, as well as tractors, etc, we deliberately limit the amount of traffic beyond the car park. We know it's a bit of a walk and do offer a quadbike service if people have lots of stuff. Showers are first on our list of wants, too! Thank you for leaving the place so tidy.

Perfect cabin with no neighbours except sheep, horses and wildlife.

Cabin

Liked I've stayed in various cabins with my dog in Scotland and this one is the best I've stayed in by a million miles. Fab cabin, friendly check-in, beautiful big farm with long entrance road with fields of sheep and horses, plus agricultural fields you can walk round the edges of. There's a map in the cabin showing various walks around the farm. It's a bit of a trek from the farm buildings to the cabin but the pay off is total peace with no neighbours! No randoms staying in a next door cabin, just wildlife, sheep and horses. The main train line runs close by but it's no issue the trains are infrequent, you can see them in the distance from the tip top sawdust toilet. The cabin is big and well equipped with the log stove to heat up drinks or food. Decking outside with a great sink unit plus another fire. Total bliss, a slice of heaven in central Scotland. Me and my dog had the best time. Thanks

From the manager: Thank you for such a lovely review and glad that you had a lovely time.

Perfect for a romantic night away from it all.

Cabin

Liked Gorgeous rustic, secluded and tranquil stay. The cabin is basic in keeping with the owner’s description. The stove heats up the cabin super cosy and extra blankets are provided for when the fire runs cold.

Disliked Bring your own wood. We felt the amount of wood for the price did not equate. We recommend bringing your own. Only side plates provided so if you need dinner plates bring your own.

From the manager: Hello and thank you for your review. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
Sorry that you didn't feel you got value for money for the wood. The wood we sell is stuff we bring in from trees that fall around the farm. We process it all ourselves and people are welcome to bring their own.
Point taken about the crockery!

Local attractions

The owners recommend taking long walks around the farm, or along the Mouse Water, which bounds the southern edge of the property and has refreshing pools for wild swimming, shallows for splashing around in and canoe hire for paddling downriver. Pretty Cleghorn Glen is also accessible right from the pitches. When exploring a little further afield, first stop might be New Lanark (10 minutes’ drive), the UNESCO-listed heritage village sitting on the Clyde and built for cotton spinners in the 18th century. Today its restored mills and worker housing are open for immersive time-travel tours, weaver demonstrations and shopping. It’s also the gateway to riverside strolls down to the dramatic Falls of Clyde cascades. For days out in the big city, Edinburgh (an hour and 10 minutes) has big-hitting attractions like the hilltop castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Dynamic Earth science centre and planetarium, as well as a lively dining and nightlife scene. Glasgow (45 minutes) pulls in the crowds with famed art galleries including the Burrell Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and if you’re there at the weekend, Barras Market is a popular spot for bargain hunters.
