  • Nearly wild camping on a peaceful, 250-acre Lanarkshire farm
  • New Lanark 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow 45 minutes; Edinburgh an hour
  • Woodland pitches surrounded by fields and woodland; shared firepits
Not quite ready for full-on wild camping but keen on an adventure under canvas? One with spectacular views down the Clyde Valley, with 250 acres of woodland and fields to wander? Haste ye to Cleghorn Farm, 10 minutes’ drive northeast of the market town of Lanark, where you can have a go at “nearly wild” camping on tree-shaded grass pitches with facilities including eco-friendly humanure toilets and water for washing or cooking (please bring bottled water for drinking). There is a path up to the pitches, which can be accessed by quad bike if you’re bringing in lots of gear. Wheelbarrows are provided for shifting kit from the car park, which is about a five-minute walk along farm tracks. Nearby is a communal firepit for rustling up alfresco meals, with wood and kindling available from Cleghorn Mains. Otherwise, you’re pretty much on your own. The fields around the site are grazed and cultivated, but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last Ice Age. You can stroll paths through the trees, or take a walk with spectacular views along Cleghorn Glen, keeping an eye out for badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the pine and beech trees. You’re very welcome to bring any family dogs to join in your holiday, but please respect the local wildlife and livestock by keeping them under control at all times. And as this is a peaceful rural hideaway, the owners ask that noise is kept to a minimum between 10pm and 7am.

What customers say

Tá an campsite díthreabhach, síochánta seo "beagnach fiáin", le húinéirí cairdiúla, cabhracha. Molann aíonna an suíomh coille síochánta, na botháin chluthar le dóirí adhmaid, agus an tine champa. Cé go bhfuil na saoráidí bunúsacha, tá an áit iontach dóibh siúd atá ag iarraidh éalú ciúin.

Solo tents and Hammocks non-electric forest floor tent pitch (solo)

Liked I had an excellent 2 nights this weekend (Fri PM - Sun AM). Lauren met/introduced me and pointed the way (sorry I was a little late). It's about 300-400 metres from car to camping area along a gravel then strimmed grass path, but an easy walk or there's some wheelbarrows nearby to make life a little easier (I didn't use them on Friday but helpful when bringing in Saturday's supplies).
A Great Wee Setup!! 5 pitches spread well enough apart in a large wooded but still very open and spacious area, a central circular fire area with log seats and smaller BBQ grills for separate cooking, fire bucket and recycling bins. You can relieve yourself in the Composting toilet shed and use the hand pumped water for washing (non drinking afaik, bring/boil your own).
On Friday night there were 3 other campers in 2 tents but they left v.early Sat morning and I had the place to myself after that. Absolute silence, there's a railway line not that far away but the birds were louder that it and nothing in the fields alongside, at least when I was there.
About 2.5 miles from Lanark, so plenty to go look at nearby and shops for stocking up. There's places to walk here on the farm as well. I took a 'short' walk along 'The Long Avenue' on Saturday night (about 1.5miles there & back) and got some lovely views, no extra wildlife but there were some semi domestic jacket nibblers in the fields/paddocks :)
Alex was really helpful, had a good chat as he got me more wood for Saturday's campfire, and another before I left on Sunday.
Thanks both, had a great time (being left on my own)

From the manager: Hi,
We are very sorry that you felt like this about our site.
We try very hard to make it as close to wild camping as possible and the composting toilet and lack of showers are both clear in the details. The flat tyre on one of the wheelbarrows you had borrowed was something that we didn't know about and my wife couldn't have dealt with at the time as it needed repairing: I went to the car park to try and fix it but it wasn't there so assumed that you had managed. I repaired the puncture that evening.
There was a scoop for the composting toilet last weekend but we are busy and things go missing, if you had mentioned it I would have brought a new one up.
The sink has a plug so that you can fill it with water to wash your hands: we are off-grid so there is no power or mains water all of which it mentions in the Features on the PitchUp listing, along with the fact that you need to bring water for drinking.
I am very sorry that the other party disturbed you; they informed me that one of their group had got angry and left in the night. Our policies demand quiet time between 2200 and 0730. We had messaged you prior to your arrival to request your arrival time and provide a contact number to raise any issues, all of which we could have resolved if we had known.
Once again I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your time here with us as we try very hard to make all of our guests feel welcome.
We hope that you had a safe onward journey and enjoyed the rest of your time in Scotland.
Alex

Pondwood non-electric forest floor tent pitch (four person)

Liked We loved everything about our stay (1 night), as did the kids! Alex was really nice & told us to text if we needed help etc but we didn’t. I’ve seen people mention about the walk to pitches from the car but we managed with 2 adults and 2 children (11&4) it took us about 5/10 minutes to walk up with our 11 year old also pushing a wheelbarrow as we had 3 very full wheelbarrows (serious over packers lol) we just felt it added to our wee adventure! We also took our own bbq/fire pit but didn’t need to as there’s a communal fire pit with all different sizes of racks against a tree that you can use to cook! We were also planning on going walks etc but ended up just staying at the site where the girls played hide and seek, collected sticks and we made our own fun! The 4 us of us can’t wait to come back 😁

Local attractions

The owners recommend taking long walks around the farm, or along the Mouse Water, which bounds the southern edge of the property and has refreshing pools for wild swimming, shallows for splashing around in and canoe hire for paddling downriver. Pretty Cleghorn Glen is also accessible right from the pitches. When exploring a little further afield, first stop might be New Lanark (10 minutes’ drive), the UNESCO-listed heritage village sitting on the Clyde and built for cotton spinners in the 18th century. Today its restored mills and worker housing are open for immersive time-travel tours, weaver demonstrations and shopping. It’s also the gateway to riverside strolls down to the dramatic Falls of Clyde cascades. For days out in the big city, Edinburgh (an hour and 10 minutes) has big-hitting attractions like the hilltop castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Dynamic Earth science centre and planetarium, as well as a lively dining and nightlife scene. Glasgow (45 minutes) pulls in the crowds with famed art galleries including the Burrell Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and if you’re there at the weekend, Barras Market is a popular spot for bargain hunters.
