Hardstanding touring pitch

General

  • Countryside park with a pretty pond, Bronze Age monument and dog walks
  • Nairn town and beach within 10 minutes’ drive, and Inverness in 25
  • Dedicated barbecue area and bike storage; river wanders close by

If hotfooting it over to the Highlands is a travel plan of yours in the near future, there’s a splendid space for you at Barns Campsite on the banks of the River Nairn. This park is also a 10-minute drive from Nairn’s town and beach, in a secluded landscape with hillside views; come in spring to see swathes of the peaceful area carpeted in bluebells.

Warmer weather’s your best chance of firing up the barbecue too – a dedicated area is on site if you’re keen on cooking over coals, and a supermarket’s about a 10-minute drive away to pick up produce.

Waterside walks with the pooch appeal? Potter around the pond at this dog-friendly park or roam beside the river; you could also fish from the water (just make sure to pick up a permit at a local shop in Nairn first). Once you’ve had enough of angling, trot back in time by exploring the Bronze Age barrow on site, the Hangman's Cairn.

Arriving at the park by bike? There's a handy bike rack beside the common room and owner Ewan’s on hand to give top tips on biking routes around the area.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

We stayed at Barns campsite for the first time this year as we have always stayed in central Inverness. The site was new, well maintained and great easy access to facilities which were open and very clean. Would definitely stay here again when in Scotland I have already recommended this site upon our return home to friends. We did not get to meet the owners only contact was by email which was professional and a prompt response. Will be back next year.

This site has everything...large flat pitches with plenty of space between, free wifi all over the site, spotlessly clean toilet and shower facilities, lots of open space to enjoy with a sense of freedom, really efficient laundry system...I could go on but you get the idea! Ewan and his team are terrific hosts. We had a minor problem which they were only too happy to help with, so friendly and approachable.

There isn’t much not to like about this site. It was peaceful and spacious. The autonomous check in made our arrival easy and hassle free. Toilets, showers and dishwashing areas were all spotlessly clean. Wifi very good - got a decent signal in our tent. We stayed for 3 nights but could easily have stayed longer.

    Disliked:

Our only tiny gripe was how hard the ground was - we bent 80% of our tent pegs trying to pitch. It took us about 4 times longer than usual to get our tent up! We ended up going to Trespass in Nairn for rock pegs which did the trick. However the positive of this was that the site wasn’t muddy at all despite the heavy rainfall so every cloud has a silver lining. And we are now prepared for if we ever encounter hard ground again!

Beautiful place immaculate showers and toilets. We stayed in one of the pods lovely and clean with electric and hot and cold water with a heater if needed. Outside was also a fire pit if we wanted to use it. Ewan was very helpful and friendly. The pitches are also a good size and well spaced in lovely surroundings. Good value for money.

This is an adequate campsite - the toilets and showers were clean, the washing machine worked - but it is rather soul-less. It's just a big field, no trees. The loos and showers are in portacabins, so it all has a rather un-anchored feeling. The washing machines are £5 a cycle that takes 34 minutes, and you can't use your own powder - theirs is very strong smelling. This site lists a hairdryer, but there isn't one.

I feel like it needs a woman's touch! The site would be much nicer with some native hedge planting to separate the hardstanding plots, and some tree planting across the site. It's been running for a few years now so frankly the cash for a decent shower block should be there - three showers and three loos for a site of that size in busy periods just isn't enough. I mentioned the hair dryer and the guy at reception (who I will just say is nice and helpful generally) just shrugged it off, but for most females this is vital, especially in cold weather.

Anyway, it's a decent site but a bit basic

From the manager...

Hi.
I really cannot understand why I'm receiving such a negative review from a guest who opted to extend her stay from 1 night to 2, after she had arrived and experienced the site.
In response
- I cannot see where in my text it mentions I supply a hair dryer? Sorry if I'm wrong. All the shower blocks have a plug beside the mirrors to plug in a hair dryer. Most people who require one would take it with them.
- The washing machines use our own soap and softener to stop guests damaging the machines with all kinds of bad chemicals. Believe me it can happen.
- In 2019, 698 trees and bushes were planted around the perimeter of the site. In 2020 a few more were added and this will continue. Rome was not built in a day and trees take time to mature.
- The site is in its second season, in a very challenging year with the complications of COVID. This after a very large build cost. If I had spare cash flying around after such a short time in business to build 5 star toilets, then I would. The reality is it takes time to build a business and we are all working very hard here to do just that.
Regards
Barns Highland.

Everything about it. Great site, medium sized, lots of space between pitches. Clean facilities, good covid precautions. Plenty of hot water in pot wash and washing machines available. Slightly different to other sites we’ve stayed at as we didn’t meet any staff but were provided with gate access code and pitch number in advance. Loved the alpacas! Good WiFi connection

    Disliked:

Bit more remote site and was very windy but site is fairly exposed. Also harder to find as on a B road.

Local attractions

Historical hotspots are rife in this part of Scotland – hike to Cawdor Castle and Gardens in an hour and a half, then travel to Culloden Battlefield visitor centre and interactive exhibition (15 minutes' drive) to see the setting of the famed Jacobite Rising’s last battle. The 18th-century Fort George is about the same distance for gazing at an awe-inspiring selection of arms, including muskets, pikes and ammunition pouches.

More places to poke around in the past – from museums to castles – are in Inverness (25 minutes), which is also the gateway to Loch Ness (45 minutes). Drive or dawdle along the banks while trying to catch a glimpse of the fabled monster, stopping by the ruins of Castle Urquhart (55 minutes) for pretty pics with the water in the background.

To get out on the water, dolphin spotting and sea fishing tours leave from Inverness and sail through the Moray Firth, while the northern edges of the Cairngorms National Park are around 40 minutes away for terrific treks in this classic Scottish landscape.

Head deeper into the area for the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (an hour away), then round off the trip with a tour and tasting of some of Scotland’s finest whisky at the Knockando distillery (55 minutes).
