General

  • Simple site on a working croft near Glenelg in the Scottish Highlands
  • Plockton and Isle of Skye within 50 minutes' drive
  • A 10-minute drive from pub, shop, bike hire and the Sandaig Bay trail

Fancy being Monarch of the Glen?

No thrones or castles are on offer at Moyle Park Campsite but you’ll stay in regal surrounds, at the head of a Scottish glen surrounded by hills and woodland. It’s a quiet site on a working croft, about 10 minutes’ drive from the coastal village of Glenelg in the Highlands and Islands.

In the summer a community-run ferry service operates from Glenelg to the Isle of Skye, and you can also take the causeway to the island from Kyle of Lochalsh, 40 minutes away. For some stunning scenery closer to home, take a drive along the coast road to Arnisdale (half an hour away) and then treat yourself to something from the tea hut.

However entranced you are by the scenery, you’ll need the odd bit of sustenance: handily enough there’s a small general store and a pub serving fresh hot food in Glenelg, and supermarkets and various eateries in Kyle of Lochalsh. If you fancy alfresco feasting, bag a haunch of venison (or just some sausages) in town and have a barbecue back at base.

You can also hire bikes in Glenelg, and take the one and a half-mile trail to Sandaig Bay, where the Ring of Bright Water writer Gavin Maxwell spent so much time inspired by the wildlife; you might spot an otter or two yourself…

Please note

Bookings must not be for more than 10 consecutive nights.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The drive to the campsite was unreal, up and down mountains with amazing views (just make sure your car is suitable for the journey and you’ll be fine!)

The remote location was amazing. We were greeted by the lovely lady who runs a hairdressers at the entrance, super cute place! Ronnie the farmer was super welcoming, he even let us use his field to exercise our nervous dog. The old sheepdog came out to play too.

Facilities were as expected really, they were nice and clean, we had close access to the toilets and had a hot shower in the morning. It’s not luxury but the location makes up for that!

Went down to Glenelg Beach which was recommended by Ronnie the owner. A superb spot and we were the only ones there.

Wi-Fi was good, fresh drinking water available and electric hookup.

Thank you for a great stay 🙂

It was a nightmare road to get to.when we got there nobody to greet us.we chose this as it said showers.we got there to find two toilets only described as porta loos.shower was in a tiny boiler room and was out of order.Needless to say we turned round and went in search of another place to stay.

From the manager...

I’m sorry our site did not appeal to you, folk normally comment on how much they love the drive over the mountain pass.
We had very cold conditions of -11 that froze the water supply to the shower room and damaged the shower.
Our toilets are definitely not porta loos as you describe ,we have 3 not 2.
It’s a pity that I did not meet with you before you left as I would have tried to offer an alternative to meet your needs.

Our holiday to Moyle Park Campsite did not happen. The reason being that to get to
Moyle one has to basically go over a mountain with extremely steep roads. we managed to get halfway up and the clutch in the car started to burn up, so we had to stop. Luckily where we stopped there was a place to back the caravan into so that we were not blocking the road. Thus giving the car a chance to cool down. A local couple stopped to enquire if everything was alright. They informed us that the road further up was even steeper than what we had already come up. That was on Sept 7th. On the morning of the 8th after taking our time and getting the car and caravan back down the hill I got in touch with the owner of Moyle Park. After explaining to him what had happened and enquiring about some sort of refund his answer was ( If I had to give a refund to everybody who does not turn up I would not be making any money. ) This begs the question how many people do not get there. Sure he kept the space for our caravan open on the night of the 7th but he knew it was going to be free for the rest of the week. Very luckily we found another place for the rest of our break. Surely a company like yours checks the roads to places like Moyle to be able to inform people as to the suitability of the roads for cars and caravans. I would suggest that if anyone was to take a caravan to Moyle they should have at the least a 3 litre engine in their vechicle to be able to negotiate such steep roads. Not your fault but the owners attitude certainly stinks.
    Regards
    Wm. D. Fraser

What a beautiful spot this is……small, relaxed site down a single track road with passing places. Absolutely peaceful and pitch black at night. Basic toilet and shower facilities but lovely and clean. Forest walks on the doorstep and pub in Glenelg a short drive away. Loads of hiking opportunities in the area.

Local attractions

If you’re a Gavin Maxwell fan, or just really into otters, you’ll want to make a pilgrimage to the Bright Water Visitor Centre on Skye (45 minutes by car): as well as learning all about Maxwell and the modern efforts to conserve the wildlife of this lush place, you can book guided trips to the author’s home on Eilan Bàn.

While you’re on Skye, you might want to take in some more of the island’s attractions such as the Museum of the Isles, tours and tastings at the Talisker distillery and walks through the outstanding landscape to spots like Kilt Rock Waterfall and the Old Man of Storr.

Half an hour away, Eilean Donan is the pick of the local castle collection, a fully-restored 13th-century pile on an island where three lochs converge. Duncraig Castle is more of a mansion and is close to Plockton (50 minutes' drive), an eccentric gem of a place with cows wandering the beach and palm trees on the streets.

You can catch seal-spotting boat cruises from Plockton, or head to Kyle of Lochalsh, where the Seaprobe Atlantis takes you over the waters in a glass-bottomed boat. Shame they don’t do that on Loch Ness… you can, however, take boats on the famed monster loch from Fort August, an hour and 10 minutes away.

  • Treasures of the Earth (29.3 miles)
