  • Scenic Highlands site by the shores of Loch Ness
  • A 25-minute drive from Urquhart Castle and 55 minutes from Inverness
  • Restaurant and shop on site; watersports and archery nearby
If you fancy spending some of your holiday trying to spot Nessie from lakeshores, and some taking in the scenic Scottish Highlands, take a look at Loch Ness Highland Resort, a family-friendly site in the village of Fort Augustus. Just five minutes’ walk (less than half a mile) from the shores of the famed Loch Ness, there are no prizes for guessing what the biggest draw is around these parts. The site’s also about five minutes from boat cruises on the loch, and from the Caledonian Canal (which runs from Inverness to the west coast at Fort William) and the 79-mile Great Glen Way that largely follows its route. For those in need of rather more activity, the site team can recommend local activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, gorge walking, river rafting, rock climbing, abseiling and archery, so staying busy is a cinch. The site itself also spreads across 40 acres of countryside, so kids (and excitable grownups) will also have plenty of space to run about in. All this could possibly be hungry work so it's handy that there's a bar-restaurant right on site to sort meals, and a handful of local eateries in the pretty Fort Augustus. After making sure everyone is fed, spend the long evenings during high season keeping eyes wide open to spy out eagles, ospreys, red stags, pine martens and red squirrels.

What customers say

This site boasts a brilliant location, a short walk from Fort Augustus and Loch Ness. Guests consistently praise the exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Pitches are generally spacious and clean, with a new play park a hit with children. However, several reviews highlight that facilities, particularly the toilet and shower blocks, are insufficient and basic, with some describing the site as unfinished and the gravel pitches as uncomfortable. The bar and restaurant received mixed feedback.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Nice location, easy walking distance to town and Loch Ness.
Restaurant was very good with welcoming staff.
Showers and toilets were very nice and cleaned regularly

Disliked Although showers are very good there were not many of them, I can only imagine it would be very hard to get a shower at peak season.
The disabled faculties are poor if you are wheelchair bound you won’t be able to shower/use the toilets or get in to reception. The stones made using a walking stick very hard also with no paths

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Staff were super helpful, really couldn't do enough.
Lovely site but very basic on touring pitches

Disliked Very few toilets and showers. 4 toilets and 2 shower cubicles (plus one as potential disabled unit) to serve 20+ pitches (plus extras without electricity). Pressure in showers dropped drastically when more than 1 person having a shower. Check in time was late - 4pm (late compared to majority of sites) and pitch up says check out is 10am but staff told us it was 11am.
This site has the potential to be amazing but we felt it was overpriced for what it offers at the moment.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked the staff -especially the cleaner and the woman who ran the bar
the facilities

Disliked We arrived very late and despite directions we drove down the lodge lane rather than the camping one. There was possibility that turning the van would have disturbed someone. Maybe better signposting.

Would have liked a cooked breakfast to be available on site

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked If I could give it 0 stars I would. If you want to pay £35 for what is essentially a gravel carpark with a poorly built portashower in then this is the place for you however this is not what you would expect for the price they charge! It’s just a large gravel area that doesn’t look like the pictures. The showers are porta style and poorly built so they don’t drain and you have to stand in other people’s dirt and soup scum not to mention they are tiny! The toilets are of a similar nature. This site just feels like an after thought but with no budget. We turned around and left and stayed elsewhere where. Would not recommend!

Liked Ruhig

Disliked Unschöner Schotterplatz. Sanitäre Anlagen für den Preis eine Zumutung. Nur 2 Duschen für alle. In diesen keine Ablagemöglighkeit. Angeblich 5 Sterne. Sicher nicht für den Wohnmobil-Stellplatzbereich.

Microlodge (four person, pet friendly)

Liked I liked the microcode, has everything that you need, but needed to buy a plug, as no USB sockets. The views are beautiful 😍

Disliked The bin area often had rubbish round it, I picked it up after second day. I would have liked a bit more character in the bar/]restaurant.

Local attractions

Explores of Loch Ness are an absolute must on any stay here. Make immediate tracks from base to the spectacularly placed Urquhart Castle (25 minutes’ drive), then continue onwards to the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition (30 minutes) to learn about 500 million years of the lake’s history and to find out where all those Nessie stories started. Travel the length of Loch Ness to reach Inverness (55 minutes), where there are botanic gardens to wander, dolphin-spotting tours to take, a cathedral and castle to visit, museums and arts centres to traipse through, and plenty of shopping to be had. Just outside the city, a stop at Culloden (an hour and five minutes) comes highly recommended to learn more about the battle that ended the Jacobite uprising of the 18th century. Heading south instead, a 50-minute drive will land guests in Fort William, the starting point of hikes up Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, as well as the home of the Ben Nevis Distillery and the West Highland Museum. Further afield, it’s a little over an hour to the edge of Cairngorms National Park, explores of which should include stops at Dalwhinnie Distillery, the Highland Folk Museum, RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and Landmark Forest Adventure Park, among lots else.
