Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park: Spacious pitches

General

  • Family beachfront park with a huge range of facilities for all ages
  • Kids' and teens' clubs, bowling and adventure playground with zipwire
  • Pool, crazy golf, amusements, bar lounge, shop and restaurant

Cor, you'll wish your Grannie’s home was as cool as this: slap bang on the beachfront, with an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, tennis courts and Costa coffee on tap… Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park sits beside the powdery white sands of Embo beach near the historic town of Dornoch, in prime position for a romp around the Scottish Highlands.

If you’re bringing the family, rest assured that the chances of the little ones getting bored are slim to none. Aside from the pool- and beach-based shenanigans, there’s mini ten-pin bowling, crazy golf, an amusement arcade, kids’ clubs featuring the Starland Krew, plus a great adventure playground with a zipwire, swings and slides. Older children and teens can get stuck into making their own animated movies or hit the decks at a DJ workshop in the Freestyle club.

Grownups, meanwhile, will likely appreciate the smashing views across the Dornoch Firth – bottlenose dolphins and seals are regularly seen frolicking in the foam – plus the extensive facilities, which include a bar lounge and restaurant, evening entertainment, shop, launderette and more. Grannie would definitely approve…

    The beach

    Disliked:

Disgusting toilets (health hazard) unhelpful reception staff (couldnt care attitude) The app for ordering everything at restaurant (easier just to order in person) the pitches were not spaced correctly (campervan encroached our pitch and warden did nothing about it), this breaks the fire divide regulations. Unwelcoming, run down, rough place.

    Looked good online

    Disliked:

When we couldn’t come due to covid I was passed from pillar to post spending more than 2 hours making phone calls to different numbers trying to find the right person to notify.
Then we were told we needed to speak to pitch up for a refund. Then sent back to the park who told us there would be no refund and if we wanted to re book there will be a £20 charge. Just a slap in the face really when your disabled child’s first holiday since covid is now not happening and you can’t afford another one or chance re booking when you’re awaiting surgery dates in the next 12 weeks.
Shoddy attitude, would not consider staying here now. I can’t believe they didn’t even offer to waive the £20 booking fee!

Won’t waste my time paying in advance again just to be ripped off.

    Don’t waste your money.

Liked where our pitch was located, the reception staff and arcade staff.
Shop had a range of stock

    Disliked:

The lack of cleanliness in the shower block. They where not well maintained I tried to phone the number on hand numerous times to get tiolet rolls and paper towels topped up at very least and it always rang out.
The staff within the onside pub were far from friendly especially when we had problems with the app! We were so put off we never went back. Any meals we did not stay at the tent for we left the site!
Also we tried to book swimming before we went up and couldn't but it said we could turn up on a 1st come 1st served basis which was a lie again we left the site!

    Large pitches

    Disliked:

Toilet block was disgusting, it was never closed for cleaning, the ladies consisted of 4 showers, 8 cubicles and 8 sinks,( there was approx 100 touring pitches) if you were lucky there was toilet paper but mostly there wasn't, the cleaner walked up the centre of toilet block pushing a mop forward only but had no bucket/ water or cleaning products.
The bar service was shocking,1 maybe 2 staff members working and they often disappeared from behind bar, it took 20 mins to be served and I was 4th in queue.
The chip shop was a mystery, half portion of raw freezing cold potatoes with half portion of cooked chips on top, not at all sure how this was achieved.

Local attractions

Dornoch, the pretty little town nearest to Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park, has a range of small independent shops, a cathedral dating back to 1224 and one of the best championship golf courses in the world.

Otherwise, if you fancy a day trip, there’s a decent variety of things to do nearby. For a fairytale castle with a French flavour, take a tour of Dunrobin Castle, which stages falconry displays twice daily in its beautiful grounds; Black Isle Wildlife Park has child-pleasing meerkats, lemurs and zebras; whisky lovers can wet their whistle at the Glenmorangie Distillery; and the spectacular waterfalls at Falls of Shin are one of the best places in Scotland to see salmon feats of derring-do as the fish leap upstream between May and September, or to go geocaching, walking and cycling along the forest trails.

If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, it’s an easy drive to classic destinations such as John O’Groats, Loch Ness and Ullapool.

Must see

  • Glenmorangie Distillery (6.5 miles)
  • Black Isle Wildlife and Country Park (28.5 miles)
