Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park: Local Beach

General

  • Family beachfront park with a huge range of facilities for all ages
  • Kids' and teens' clubs, bowling and adventure playground with zipwire
  • Pool, crazy golf, amusements, bar lounge, shop and restaurant

Cor, you'll wish your Grannie’s home was as cool as this: slap bang on the beachfront, with an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, tennis courts and Costa coffee on tap… Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park sits beside the powdery white sands of Embo beach near the historic town of Dornoch, in prime position for a romp around the Scottish Highlands.

If you’re bringing the family, rest assured that the chances of the little ones getting bored are slim to none. Aside from the pool- and beach-based shenanigans, there’s mini ten-pin bowling, crazy golf, an amusement arcade, kids’ clubs featuring the Starland Krew, plus a great adventure playground with a zipwire, swings and slides. Older children and teens can get stuck into making their own animated movies or hit the decks at a DJ workshop in the Freestyle club.

Grownups, meanwhile, will likely appreciate the smashing views across the Dornoch Firth – bottlenose dolphins and seals are regularly seen frolicking in the foam – plus the extensive facilities, which include a bar lounge and restaurant, evening entertainment, shop, launderette and more. Grannie would definitely approve…

    Disliked:

Dirty toilets and showers on arrival and didn't improve, one toilet not flushing and blocked, missing and/or loose toilet seats, rubbish on the pitch, large holes adjacent to pitch which hadn't been filled and compacted leaving trip hazard in the dark. Washing up area, no plugs for the sinks.

On speaking to another camper the facilities were the even worse last year!!

Fab site! Beautiful location!11/09/2023

We loved this site! We are a couple in our 30’s who stayed here for 3 nights with your black lab on one of the electric hook up pitches. We were £60 for 3 nights plus £3 to bring the dog. Which is actually such good value for a site with so much on it. It’s also a fab site as a starting point for the nc500.
The beach was a short walk from our pitch & is beautiful! Water is so clear. Toilet/shower facilities are good. Hot shower/free hairdryer. Good washing up area & for filling up water container.
The shop on site was fab had lots of variety in it & wasn’t hugely expensive for a camp site shop as you usually expect like I bought a 1 litre carton of milk & it was £1.50 compared to the £1.20 your pay in a supermarket. Only had chips(£3.50 for a regular portion) from the little fish & chip shop on site but they were tasty. Oh p.s if you go into Dornoch don’t eat from the highland chip shop😬(£4.95 for a large portion of some of the worst chippy chips we’ve ever had🙈)

We didn’t use the entertainment complex as we had the dog with us but I went a wander through it one night & has a good wee amusements area. Nice bar area with lots of different entertainment through the evening starting at 5pm with a kids disco followed by bingo at 7pm then different acts (singers etc) coming on about 9pm. Restaurant also looked lovely & had a nice outdoor dining area. Obviously can’t comment on the food as we didn’t eat there but did see a sign advertising 2 cooked breakfasts in the morning for around £14 served until 11.30.

Nice swing park & tennis courts next to the entertainment complex. Again we didn’t use swing park(thought we might get a few funny looks 😂) but it was always mobbed with kids over the weekend.
Well think I’ve covered everything! Aha hope this helps someone as with us living a 5 hr + drive away from this site I really looked into & read the reviews on this camp site but def worth the drive & will def be back.

    Disliked:

Only negative points I can think of & they really weren’t that big a deal to us are that we arrived on the Thursday & site was quiet & the shower/toilet blocks were spotless well stocked with toilet roll etc. though come the Friday morning the site became very busy & we went from having lots of space round us to having a caravan with a family of 5 & a dog parked almost up against our guy ropes! Ha now we’re quite chilled so just switched our windbreaker to that side & sorted wee bit of privacy restored but know for some people hearing a toddler cry & a dog that was tied up outside caravan whimpering & barking would be a deal breaker.
Also as site had became at least 50% busier by the weekend the shower/toilet block took a hit too in the sense of which a few of the cubicles then had no loo roll & seen at least 2 toilets blocked with toilet roll. They also were def abit dirtier at this point. Sandy/muddy floor & paper towels that were overflowing the bin. Def think they might need to increase the cleaning/top up of this area at busy periods.

Only other point worth mentioning is something not really related to the actual site but more of a heads up for other dog owners. We spent a few hours 2 days in a row at the beach as the weather was glorious & our dog being a lab was in the water swimming with us constantly but unfortunately by the Saturday night she had developed limp tail/swimmers tail from the water being quite cold & we could tell she was abit sore & uncomfortable with it😢so just a heads up if your dog loves to swim at beach too to watch out for it as water is quite cold even in 27 degree heat ha & maybe take some metacam or similar dog painkiller as a just in case.

Local attractions

Dornoch, the pretty little town nearest to Grannie’s Heilan’ Hame Holiday Park, has a range of small independent shops, a cathedral dating back to 1224 and one of the best championship golf courses in the world.

Otherwise, if you fancy a day trip, there’s a decent variety of things to do nearby. For a fairytale castle with a French flavour, take a tour of Dunrobin Castle, which stages falconry displays twice daily in its beautiful grounds; Black Isle Wildlife Park has child-pleasing meerkats, lemurs and zebras; whisky lovers can wet their whistle at the Glenmorangie Distillery; and the spectacular waterfalls at Falls of Shin are one of the best places in Scotland to see salmon feats of derring-do as the fish leap upstream between May and September, or to go geocaching, walking and cycling along the forest trails.

If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, it’s an easy drive to classic destinations such as John O’Groats, Loch Ness and Ullapool.
