  • Peaceful site at the northern tip of Barra Island, Outer Hebrides
  • CalMac ferry terminal 10 minutes’ drive; Castlebay 20 minutes
  • Walking access to sandy beaches; barbecues allowed on site
The rugged island of Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, is a top spot for a camping adventure, and Barra Sands Campsite, at its northernmost tip, is an excellent base from which to take in windswept beaches and assorted wildlife (from seals to birds of prey), not to mention the unusual spectacle of aircraft landing right on the sand at Barra Airport (five minutes’ drive), in the bay of Traigh Mhòr. A short walk through the fields takes you to the vast sandy expanse of Traigh Sgurabhal, a fairly sheltered beach with shallow waters for bathing; or you can hike the 10 minutes to Traigh Eais, a west-facing beach backed by sand dunes, where you might catch some pretty spectacular sunsets. Along the west coast, there are also beaches with rockpools where the kids might find crabs and other marine creatures. Further afield, you might want to visit Allasdale Bay (15 minutes), also known as Seal Bay – guess why? – or the deserted village of Buaile nam Bodach (15 minutes). In addition to its spacious pitches, this peaceful family-friendly site has a number of facilities, including ladies’ and gents’ toilet and shower blocks, a washing machine and drying lines, plus an indoor washing-up area. For dinner, you can buy some freshly caught fish in Northbay (10 minutes) and grill it on the barbecue; for anything else you might need in the way of provisions, there are shops in Castlebay (20 minutes).

Liked: Lovely clean toilet and shower facilities. Unfortunately we’re there in a storm so didn’t make the most of all the information available about walks etc.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Clean, warm shower and toilet facilities, friendly staff (John) and beautiful views

Disliked: Beach access- whilst the campsite overlooks a beautiful beach, it's a 15-20 min walk to a jetty at the far end of the beach before you can access the beach, all the land surrounding the campsite is private croft and there are no public paths

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean, warm shower and toilet facilities. Good space to wash dishes and a fridge to store cold items. A washing machine was available at an additional cost but great they had one on offer. Site management were helpful and always on hand.

Disliked: Bathroom could benefit from a Hairdryer. Satnav takes you too a point just before site. additional site signage would be great.

Electric optional grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely spot on Barra a short walk from white sand beaches. A warm welcome from Derek who was always approachable, helpful and friendly. Top notch facilities - good electric showers in the heated toilet block (which was kept spotless)- with communal fridge and washing machine. Everything we needed for our week on the island. Could have stayed longer, and would definitely stay here again!

Local attractions

When you think you’ve got to know Barra, head to the CalMac terminal (10 minutes' drive) and catch a ferry to neighbouring Uist, where you can visit the remains of 18th-century Ormacleit Castle or the ruined home of Jacobite heroine Flora MacDonald before heading to Loch Druidibeag for a spot of birdwatching. Also on Uist (specifically North Uist) is Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre, where displays, photographs and a sculpture trail illustrate the local Gaelic heritage. You might also catch musical performances here, or just grab a bite to eat from the on-site café. The Hebridean Way, which links Vatersay (half an hour) to the Butt of Lewis, on Lewis and Harris, is a long-distance hiker or cyclist’s dream, taking in 10 islands with spectacular coastlines, hilly landscapes and archaeological sites like Cladh Hallan, where some prehistoric mummies were unearthed in the early 2000s.
