  • Friendly adults-only site with views over the Firth of Forth estuary
  • A five-minute drive from the coast and 20 minutes from St Andrews
  • On-site restaurant with homecooked food; good public transport links
Aiming to get away to the scenic East Neuk of Fife or St Andrews’ home of golf? With views over the Firth of Forth estuary, Monturpie Caravan Park might fit the bill nicely. This family-owned adults-only site is just five minutes’ drive from Scotland's east coast (including the Fife Coastal Path), with the university town of St Andrews 20 minutes’ drive to the north. A friendly atmosphere runs freely here and pitches are well spaced out to provide plenty of peace. For more homely vibes, you’ll have the option of sampling homecooked food and baked goods in the site’s small licensed restaurant (open from Wednesday to Saturday between late morning and mid-afternoon). Other facilities include a heated toilet, shower block and a launderette with disabled facilities. Public transport’s a champ here, as links from the site entrance include express coaches to Edinburgh and Glasgow or local buses to nearby walking havens. Of course, Fife is a mecca for golf fans too and this area doesn’t disappoint, as there are a couple of golf courses five minutes’ drive away. When you feel like just letting your feet take you somewhere instead, the local village is 10 minutes’ walk away. It’s home to a small food shop and a popular hotel with quality meals (yes please, steak night and Sunday roasts). Foodie spots pull through elsewhere too, as there are a number of good-quality restaurants a short drive away, including a Michelin-starred place.

Fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The site has beautiful views across the Firth of Forth. The pitch we had (16) was fully serviced which was a first for us. The owner, Duncan, helped us reverse our caravan onto the pitch as the incline would have strained our motor mover. This was our first stay at this site though we have been to Fife many times. The siterned the hard way from previous itself is central for visiting many places. There are only 2 men’s showers and toilets, and despite how busy the site was, I never had the queue or wait. The toilet and shower area was very clean.
There is a lovely cafe on the site which also did a Friday night takeaway. All home cooked food and there were an array of treats available in the information/ laundry room either paying in the honesty bow or just leaving a note of the cost and your pitch number and Duncan would collect when out emptying the site bins and recycling. Cash or card wasn’t an issue. The home baking was a bit too lovely particularly the shortbread. All in all we had a brilliant week at Monturpie and will definitely be back.

Disliked Not so much a dislike, but be prepared with strong pegs as the site is elevated and can feel exposed when it’s breezy. Our caravan awning rattled a bit but stood firm as we learned the hard way from previous experience and invested in drill driven rock pegs. The site does not have Wi-Fi though I had excellent reception on EE but my wife had none on Talk Talk

Local attractions

So, St Andrews (20 minutes’ drive) has caught your eye, but where will you descend upon first? Golf games don’t get much more historic than the Old Course (20 minutes) and those of you who are fully into your golfing lifestyle might want to peep into the golf museum in the town. Perhaps Craigtoun Country Park (20 minutes) might be your cup of tea, especially for picnics, playgrounds and walking trails. And how about somewhere a little more remote? The walking trails at Lomond Hills Regional Park (35 minutes) or Loch Leven (50 minutes) are a good shout for relaxation. You’ll get to go wildlife spotting at the same time, especially since Loch Leven is a nature reserve (and many of the trails are cycle-friendly so you can cover plenty of ground). Scotland’s Secret Bunker (15 minutes) is certainly pretty underground, in the literal sense too, as this Cold War bunker has been turned into a museum. And for another historic hidey hole, you'll want to head to Kellie Castle (15 minutes) for its arts and crafts garden and exhibitions.
