General

  • Within walking distance of three sandy beaches
  • Spectacular scenery on the Rockcliffe coastline
  • Laundry room, lockable bike shed, play area and barbecue area

Here’s an interesting factoid with which to flummox your friends: it wasn’t just famous seaside resorts like Brighton and Bournemouth where well-to-do Victorian types hung out for their hols. Oh no. They sallied north as well, to the gorgeous coastline of Rockcliffe in Dumfries and Galloway for its warm climate, wealth of walks and unsullied scenery. Jolly sensible of them, of course and something of which even fierce social critic Charles Dickens might have approved.

Twenty-first century sorts seeking the same high standards should sally forth to Rockcliffe’s Castle Point Caravan Site, set a short stroll from the sea and within easy ambling distance of three sandy beaches – and with some of the best views in the area. Which for Scotland is saying quite a lot...

On site, guests will find a laundry room with washing machines and dryers, washing-up areas, a lockable bike shed, a play area for the kids and a barbecue area with seating. For provisions, a well-stocked food shop is about a mile away at Colvend and a couple of small supermarkets are around six miles away in Dalbeattie.

Lovely campsite with great views on a working farm. The boys enjoyed watching the cows and farmers at work. The facilities were very clean. Staff were helpful and friendly. Great walks from the campsite and lots more to do only a short drive away. Will definitely be coming back.

Wonderful, peaceful location on a working farm. Gorgeous wildlife with red kites, kestrels, buzzards, deer and foxes all spotted from our pitch in the bottom field.
Site facilities are basic but very clean, information point helpful. Facilities at the tent fields are being extended which will be great as only 2 ladies loo's. No designated pitches, just turn up and see where you fancy.Set of goal posts at far and of field for those into footy.
Fellow campers good company, and very respectful about noise. Hidden table tennis table in the big barn at reception which was fab - just ask Jackie and Dave for the bats (£5 deposit)
Hosts were great, really helpful and loved a blether!! (Btw I found my car keys in the skip Dave!)
Gorgeous wee gallery and coffee shop along in Rock Cliff itself but nothing else. Really well stocked Londis just at the road end, and in nearby Dalbeattie there's a Co-op, chippy, Chinese, Italian and a couple of hotels. The bakers is amazing, as is Snax Sandwich shop (across from the Co-op ) - ladies so friendly and helpful with ideas of what to do to, where to go - local hidden treasures.

    Disliked:

The only personal issue I had was the beaches. Disappointed as expected lots of sand and tidal waves, but merely my fault. It is an estuary so the water goes out miles and miles, and leaves muddy "beach" behind. Some very small sandy areas at Rock Cliff and as the name suggests, loads of rocky areas too. But, it's personal.

Thought the site was very quite and very clean it was also in walking distance of several beaches and you could also take the car to further a field places. Set in an beautiful location in the hills. If you don't mind the cows then it is a fab base for visiting dumfries and Galloway. I will definitely be going back for a longer period.
The facilities were also Spotless and very modern for the showers and toilets. It also had WiFi access and electric hook up included In the price which was very reasonable and it allowed dogs which was great for an the whole family to come.

    Disliked:

There are not many supermarkets around so stock up well on your food.

Directions

Either follow the A711 to Dalbeattie and then the A710 to Rockcliffe (recommended if you have a caravan) or the A710 from Dumfries, for a more scenic trip. Follow the signs to Rockcliffe. At the brow of the hill just as you pass the Rockcliffe sign, turn left down Barcloy Road. Follow the road straight onto the farm road. The entrance to the caravan site is in the farmyard.

Local attractions

Walking and wildlife are the order of the day here: clamber along the cliffs from Castle Point to Rockcliffe and along the Jubilee Path up the Muckle Knowe; you can also walk along the causeway at low tide from Kippford to Rough Island and its bird sanctuary or take to the hills at Screel, Bengairn and beyond.

To be even more strenuous than Scottish hillwalking, follow the signposted trail from Rockcliffe village and climb the Motte of Mark for some stunning views over the Urr estuary and beyond to the Lake District and the Isle of Man.

As for wildlife, the area is full of species to stare at, including butterflies, bluebells and summer swallows, with Dumfries and Galloway an all-round nature haven: try the Galloway Red Kite Trail, stamping around with the stags at the Galloway Forest Park, looking for small critters in the beach rockpools or seeing the seabirds from the RSPB centre at the Mull of Galloway.

Remember to flummox your friends with another Random Rockcliffe Fact: a very rare species of ladybird was discovered here in 2011, named Subcoccinella vigintiquattuorpunctata after the 24 spots on its wings – bonus points if you can say that very quickly.

If you prefer two wheels rather than two feet, Castle Point is close to the 7stanes, the seven mountain biking trails across the south of Scotland and there are numerous cycle trails nearby.

Other active options in the area include pony trekking, fishing, sailing and tennis – Kippford is a well-known sailing centre and there are watersports, archery and other activities at Galloway Activity Centre and the Laggan Outdoor Centre. There are several nine- and 18-hole golf courses within reach too, with the closest at Colvend Golf Club on the Solway Coast.

After all that activity, relax and fill up with the many flavours of fresh Dumfries and Galloway produce: have a wander around the foodie village of Castle Douglas or stock up on the famous Cream of Galloway ice cream near the village – there’s an ice cream factory here with an indoor activity centre for rainy days.
