Hoddom Castle Caravan Park: Great pitch

General

  • Spacious family-friendly site 15 minutes' drive from Lockerbie
  • In the grounds of a 16th-century castle next to the River Annan
  • Golf course, salmon fishing, guided walks and play park

A castle? But of course – surely you deserve nothing less? Hoddom Castle Caravan Park, in the Dumfries & Galloway countryside a 15-minute drive from the town of Lockerbie, is a fine pick for families and those with an eye for the finer things in life.

This is a site that’s been running since 1973, but the history of the place goes back much further than that – the castle in question is a 16th-century border keep that’s the focal point of the 10,000 acres of the Hoddom and Kinmount estates. Other historic buildings including the hilltop Repentance Tower and the ancient St Kentigerns churchyard are scattered around the estate, and the River Annan river flows along its edge.

Guests are welcome to roam along walking trails or join the tours run by the estate ranger on selected summer Sunday afternoons. Other suitably regal activities are to hand too: the estate has its own nine-hole golf course and some top spots for salmon fishing in the river.

Even the most princely of visitors need to let their hair down occasionally, so there’s also a play park on site.

We stayed here for 1 night as a stopover on our trip up to the Highlands. This site is absolutely amazing. Its location is excellent and the facilities were spotless!
Showers and toilets and the whole grounds were fantastic. Restaurant food and staff were exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed our nights stay and will definitely be back soon.

We spent 2 nights at Hoddom Castle with 2 grandchildren aged 9 and 14.
Beautiful setting, spacious pitches, water points well placed close by. There are immaculate showers in the main block, a good play area for children, clean and tidy site. Touring pitches are dotted around among seasonal pitches which meant quieter nights and less trundling water barrels and sliding doors on camper vans. Very relaxed atmosphere and a good bar on site, we didn’t eat there but food coming to other tables looked lovely. Some great walks on site and around the area, easy for children and elderly people.

    Disliked:

A lot of pitches require chocks for levelling.
Chemical toilet point is miles away from everything tucked away almost in the woods, people were driving back and forth to use it. There are separate toilet blocks dotted around the site which could easily be adapted to have a disposal point, a good improvement in my view.
The games room was closed (COVID restrictions) and the site map showing local paths and trails is in there. A printed version would have been useful, we googled the area to find information as site staff were not very helpful on this topic.
Whilst the showers are excellent the toilets are in a separate area which hasn’t been upgraded and there was an overpowering drainage smell.

This place is great for some peace and quite or it was at this time of year. plenty of walks to take and fishing as well as golfing right on the door step. Heard the pub food was cheap and nasty but we found it to be very tasty and a good amount for the price. the waiter was a young man who was there when needed very little waiting time Pizza was delicious they even sell doggie ice cream which certainly brightened the dogs day especially as it was very hot 30 in sep fantastic. Only down fall was electric hookup was quite far away but the park loaned us a longer cable for a refundable cash amount which we got back at the end of our stay.
Would recommend to our friends and will go back next year.

    Disliked:

grass well kept and park well maintained could put some people off with noise from ride on cutters and strummers and pub didn’t open for breakfast or lunch due to time of year could maybe extend to having a lunch opening time only one criticism that I have. But maybe toilets though very clean could do with an upgrade in future starting to get tired looking.

Local attractions

If you need a little tipple to sip while you survey your smart surrounds, take a jaunt to one of the local gin distilleries – the Distillery at Dalton is 10 minutes away by car and Annandale Distillery 15 minutes. (Best be saving their [excellent] wares for later if you’re intending to try your hand at horse carriage driving, 25 minutes away at the Chariots of Fire centre.)

Countryside visit not complete until you’ve seen all the farm animals? Take your pick from outings to Dalscone Farm Fun (20 minutes away), Mabie Farm Park and Walby Farm Park (both half an hour): all are packed with furry friends that should have the small sorts (and most likely the grownups too) squealing with glee. If they’re more into beasts of the prehistoric variety, detour instead to Dino Park (10 minutes) for a roaring good time among the lifesized models.

Fancy flexing the credit card? Get on over to Gretna Gateway Outlet Village to browse for bargains from a whole host of high street names.
