  • Adults-only touring pitches on a Dumfries & Galloway livestock farm
  • Castle Douglas less than 10 mins' drive; close to 7Stanes bike trails
  • Spacious wildlife haven with easy access from the A75
It's a rural outlook indeed at Mollance Farm Campsite, where you’ll wake up to lake views and and often spot wildlife (such as red kites, moorhens, hares and deer) around the place as well as the farm animals that call this livestock farm home permanently. Despite this deeply rural outlook, it’s remarkably easy to get to this corner of the Dumfries & Galloway countryside, as Mollance Farm is just off the A75 for easy journeys in, out and all about. That also means it’s convenient to get to places like Castle Douglas (less than 10 minutes’ drive away) for fuel, restaurants and foodie supplies. There’s a supermarket here, but this foodie town is primarily known for its 50 or so independent businesses, so it’s worth taking the time to explore those for a good taste of the area. Elsewhere nearby you can take it easy with beach days and strolls around historic sites or up the adrenaline levels with a whole lot of adventure activities including the 7Stanes mountain bike trails at Dalbeattie (15 minutes’ drive). Whichever approach you opt for, you’ll be coming back to an adults-only site where the touring pitches are sizeable enough to accommodate any size of caravan or motorhome, plus a car and an awning. Toilet and shower facilities are provided, and maintained to a high standard of appearance and cleanliness. Dogs are welcome but will need to be kept on a lead so they don’t upset the livestock.

Liked: A peaceful and lovely setting easily found by Google. An excellent, beautifully clean, shower block with easily accessed sewage tank. (You might take that for granted but we have been on sites without sewage facilities!) Thank you both for your hospitality.

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: Easy to access location off main road. Very quiet.

Disliked: - Despite being advertised as adults only, on the first night a family with two children turned up. As the owners aren't around to check you in or say hello this went unnoticed. We booked this site over a nearby site specifically because it was adults only. - It's also listed as dog friendly, which is largely was, but on the farm there are 3 off lead territorial dogs that bark every time you walk your dog past them. The smaller black dog even ran up to our on-lead dog and snarled/growled at him. - There was no hot water in the evening and no signage to communicate this which meant having a cold shower after a long day of walking. No hot water in the taps at this point either. It was hot first thing in the morning however. - The bathroom facilities were clean but not well maintained. There were two toilet and shower rooms but only one was working, the other was a construction site. The one that was open, the door didn't shut/lock properly, you had to use a latch. On arriving on Friday night there was two toilets rolls, by Saturday night these had ran out and no one had replaced them, so we had to use the paper towels from next to the sink. - The bin in the bathroom was a Tesco bag for life that was overflowing by the end of the weekend and hadn't been emptied/changed. A lot of these issues would be ignorable if not for the price of the site being similar to others in the area which are potentially a lot better maintained.

From the manager: Hi Daniel Sorry for the late response Apologies for having children on the site it was an over sight from my husband as he had forgotten that site was adult only site so sorry. About the hot water our biomass system went down that weekend unfortunately Unknown to us there was no hot water, however when we found out it was fixed! The toilet block situation has been taken onboard and improvements will be made, however yes it doesn’t not lock by the handle but we have put a latch on which does the same thing, and no you cannot see in the door from the outside! Sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay, however thank you for leaving your honest reviews and it is all taken on board:) Many Thanks Derek & Sheena Cartner

They need to get better, not worth the £30 paid.

Local attractions

Your first visit around here should be to the atmospheric ruin a short walk away in the farm grounds – it’s been there since the late 19th century. Once you’ve seen that, set off to see some more of the area’s history at Cairn Holy (half an hour’s drive), a set of neolithic chambers that are more than 4000 years old, and Threave Castle (10 minutes), built in 1369. More in the mood for activity? Take your mountain bikes to the downhill trails of 7Stanes: Dalbeattie (15 minutes), or head over to Galloway Activity Centre (20 minutes) for things like watersports, high ropes courses, laser tag and a go on the wobbly waterpark. For more chilled-out days, take a walk along the plant-filled paths of Broughton House & Garden (20 minutes), look out for big birds at the Red Kite Centre, Laurieston (15 minutes) or hit the beach – Rockcliffe, Sandyhills and Dalavan beaches are all around 20 minutes away, and all good options for a day out (and they’re dog friendly too).
