The view from the shores of Loch Ken

General

  • Award-winning activity holidays on the shores of Loch Ken
  • Laser combat, watersports, archery, climbing, zipwiring and more
  • Café serving evening meals and breakfast

Activity seekers and adrenaline champs – come and ken the place for you. Zip your way along to Galloway Activity Centre on the shores of Loch Ken in Scotland’s southwest for a shipshape activity hol, whether you’re planning on plunging into water alongside your beloved, paddling about as part of a group, or taking the family along to try (and fail) to show them who’s boss with a bow and arrow.

Even the views here are champion, with roomy pitches overlooking Loch Ken and the Galloway Hills, and there are loads of other active options in the area too: have a surf of the local attractions from the tab on the right.

Galloway Activity Centre has assembled a winning line-up whether guests are happier on land or in the safe non-tidal waters of Loch Ken, with a huge range of activities and outdoor equipment to tackle: outdoor laser combat games, archery, climbing, paddle sports, windsurfing, sailing, mountain biking, zip wires… take your pick then design your own activity package to mix it all up.

After all that energy burning, you might be chuffed to know that the centre has a TV for night time chilling, and that evening nosh (as well as brekkie) is available at the site café. Toilets and showers are available in the clubhouse, which is open all night.

The activities and staff were great. Everything all very clean.

Be careful if walking around forest area etc as we came a cross a snake (adder) we think but we didnt stick around to check lol.

    Disliked:

The activities and staff were great. only down side was toilet block as its used by everyone doing activities, so u=you cant get into the loo for people getting in to wet suits. A seperate toilet block for folk in tents yurts etc would be a great idea. Maybe adding a play park for kids to as if there not doing activities there's nothing else to do on site.

We done the Gourmet Burger night and it was ok rather slow to be served and the burger wasn't much to write home about. Maybe a vending machine for evening or cafe open later for snacks in peak season.

I liked the view that we had over the Loch Ken.
There were a lot of activities that you could do like canoeing, sailing, climbing, zip wire, etc. There was also a water slide and water fun activities on the lake which looked amazing.
The showers and toilets were ok, they got regulary cleaned, although the floor was constantly wet as all the visitors get changed in their wet suits there, so it's always wet.
The staff was very friendly and so were the owners.

There was a TESCO shop about 20 min drive which was handy.

    Disliked:

We didn't eat in the cafe as it was way to expensive. A full English breakfast was nearly £10 pp. Way to much for my camping budget.

The water slide and other activities were also expensive, but they were very fun.

I disliked the dog poo that I found near our tents. I think there should be a DOG-free zone there for people with young children.

Communal grass area in the centre of the tents. The size of the pitches. The activities on offer (not the prices or availability)
    The other friendly campers.

    Disliked:

Majority of the staff were miserable and just don’t look happy in their job. The showers are far too hot, my children couldn’t go in, I could barely go under! They are non adjustable.
The amount of dog poo on the grass... BUT i did see staff members on two occasions doing a poop pick up.
Having 4 kids I bought The prices of the activities were a bit much. I would like to have seen a kids area for under 10’s as the majority of the activities were for 10 and over (suitable for 1 of my children)
The cafe is overpriced: we booked in for dinner (must book before arrival) £15.50 each, burgers were ok, coleslaw was really good.

From the manager...

Hi,

We are sad to have read your review. I love my job and I know that my fellow colleagues do too so I'm sorry and shocked to hear you think we look miserable.

Regarding the showers, these are communally adjustable so if you'd asked we could have turned them down a little for you. We can't win with the showers - we can of course adjust the thermostat but deliberately do not have individual controls on them (to stop children under ten burning themselves). Had you mentioned this we would of course have turned the thermostat down there and then.

We completely agree with you on the dog poo front. As you probably saw, we have multiple bins for dog waste across the centre - in the camp site, around the club house and water front. We'd expect owners to be responsible but as they aren't always, we do a "womble" at 9am and 5pm and throughout the day should we see anything.

In terms of activities, they are price on a sliding scale and all advertised on our website and around the centre. So the more people, the cheaper per person. For a full day of activities (totalling 6 hours worth of activity taster sessions with a qualified instructor) it would be £44 per person (probably less than most people pay a baby sitter!). We ask people to book in the day before as not all staff are qualified to run all activities. If people turn up on the day without booking we do our very best to squeeze them in. The majority of activities are suitable for ALL ages. The only exception is the wobbly water park. I have listed below all of the activities available for a child under 10.

Sailing, Windsurfing, Stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, the slip n slide, archery, outdoor laser combat, Mountain biking (for 8 and older), Climb & zip, Leap of faith and crates, Giant Swing, Bubble Football. I am sorry you feel this is limited - fortunately for us most of our customers do not agree with you on this.

I'm sorry you believe the cafe is overpriced. All of our produce is locally sourced from great suppliers. We make all of our food fresh to order on the day and £15.50 includes the main meal (homemade beef and onion, pork apple and sage burger, or chicken breast lemon and thyme with a falafel / veggie option) and dessert (ice cream, a shot of feshly ground coffee and a liquer).

Regards

The miserable team on reception :)

    Scenery was breathtaking.
    Tent pitch was fine.
Would highly recommend the area to both campers and glampers.

    Disliked:

Toilet area was a bit messy with water strewn everywhere but there were lots of schoolchildren around so that was to be expected..

From the manager...

Many thanks for visiting us and for your review. Great to hear you enjoyed the lovely scenery. The toilet and shower area do get quite heavily used during the day, hope it didn't have too much of a negative impact on you.
Many thanks again and will hopefully see you again

Local attractions

Most folk who visit Galloway Activity Centre find more than enough to do on site, but if you do decide to explore the area you’ll be on a winning streak whether you stick close to home or get into the car for a drive around Dumfries to visit award-winning gardens, National Trust Scotland sites, championship golf courses or the many nature reserves and wildlife havens: Dumfries and Galloway has a famed Red Kite Trail, red squirrel sanctuaries and seabirds by the thousands at the Mull of Galloway.

The activity centre is right on the edge of the Galloway Forest National Park, where you can take a break from all the activity by gazing upwards: the park was the first Dark Sky Park in the UK and has the darkest skies in Europe because of its remote location.

Elsewhere, there are three hundred square miles to explore, the 7Stanes trails beloved by mountain bikers, that Red Kite Trail (and a Red Deer Range). Drop into one of the visitor centres for armfuls of info and ideas: there are centres at Kirroughtree, Glentrool and Clatteringshaws.

Also about, Castle Douglas, Galloway Activity Centre’s nearest town, has a growing (and apt) rep as Scotland’s food town: sample all sorts of fish, toffee (not together), game and other delicacies to see for yourself; you’ll be burning off hundreds of calories after all…

Foodies can also go along to one of Castle Douglas’s regular food fairs, food weekends or chef masterclasses, and walk it all off with a trek around Threave Castle and its gardens or a circular hike from Castle Douglas around Carlingwark Loch.

Film fan or feeling wicked? Dumfries and Galloway is where The Wicker Man was filmed and there’s now an annual festival as well as a Wicker Man trail from Kirkcudbright.
