Boreland Farm: Lodge

General

  • Ayrshire site surrounded by forest and easily accessed from the A714
  • A 20-minute drive to Newton Stewart; 25 minutes to Ailsa Craig boats
  • On the edge of the Galloway Forest Park for hiking and bike trails

In the South Ayrshire countryside, just off the A714 and a little under 10 minutes from the village of Barrhill, Boreland Farm is a place that mixes up rural time with easy access to amenities and days out.

Stay here and you can hang out with the resident horses, alpacas, sheep and goats, and pick up fresh eggs from the free-range chickens that live on site too. There’s forest all around the 10.5-acre site, so pretty views, peace and privacy come as standard, and you may well be treated to spottings of some of the wildlife that resides in the trees too (red squirrels, red kites and red deer are among the potential sightings…)

Heading here for active times? This area is well known as something of a hub for outdoor activities – Newton Stewart (20 minutes’ drive) has a great golf course, and it’s also possible to go swimming or fishing in nearby lochs or organise days of horse riding, watersports, climbing and clay pigeon shooting nearby. For hikers and mountain bikers, the Galloway Forest Park, a few minutes’ drive from the farm, is the place to be (and for stargazers too, as the park has Gold Tier Dark Sky Park status…)

Facilities on site also include a small shower block with toilet, a washing-up area, and a fridge for guest use. Local produce is available on request, as is wood for your barbecue or firepit. For other bits for your barbecue, pick up supplies at the village shop in Barrhill or supermarket in Newton Stewart). There’s a rural pub just under 10 minutes’ drive away if you’d rather someone else did the cooking.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No electric barbecues allowed.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

    - The owners, Paul & Sally were very friendly and helpful. Lovely to chat to, checking that all was well and offering any help. They couldn't do enough to ensure that we were looked after and enjoying our stay.
    - The fantastic views from the top of the hill where we camped
    - Great oil drums available to enjoy campfires in
    - Stargazing once it went dark
    - Lots of lovely animals on the farm including alpacas - children would love to see all these.
    - Cars are not parked next to the tent but in a designated car park. Makes it lovely and quiet and safe for children, although worth asking the owners to help you take your stuff up to your pitch as it is up a steep hill and they have a quad bike

    Disliked:

    - Distance from the toilet to the tent pitch and climbing back up the hill
    - Missed not having access to a shower. Whilst this exists for the lodge, the owners have plans to build a new shower & toilet block for campers next year.

From the manager...

Watch this space Adam!

Hope to see you all next year!

We had a great weekend camping in Sally and Paul farm, they were super hosts. It was our first camping/cycling experience with two young kids, 1 and 4 years old, and all of us loved our time there. The location of the camping was on the top of a wee hill with beautiful views and spectacular sunsets. The farm has a variety of animals all around, some roaming free, giving you the feeling of wild camping and a super entertainment for the kids, of course with care.
The facilities in the site were very clean and tidy and covered all the needs while camping including provision of coal, fire logs, fresh eggs against a very small fee. They were also brilliant to give us a lift while train cancellation from Barrhill stranded us there.
In all, a very positive experience which surely will be repeated.

The entire location is fantastic - very peacful and the ideal place to reconnect as a family away from the stresses of work. We loved having some many lovely and peaceful animals right at our doorstep and the general feeling of peace and restful pace of life there was very restorative. The lodge was wonderful and very imaginatively designed. Our youngest loved the upstairs sleeping area. The surrounding area was ideal for long quiet walks. Paul and Sally were very friendly, welcoming and personal hosts. Nothing was too much touble for them. We were all really sad to be leaving the place and can't wait to return in the future.

Local attractions

Board a boat, make your way onto mountain biking trails or take your golf club out for a swing… with Girvan (25 minutes’ drive) for boat trips to Ailsa Craig, the 7Stanes: Glentrool Mountain Bike Trails (10 minutes’ drive) and the Turnberry Golf Course (35 minutes) all within striking distance, there’s a nice variety of activities around.

For afternoons of the historical kind, Culzean Castle (45 minutes) is more than just the clifftop castle. There are playgrounds, a deer park and beaches down below, so plenty of places for everyone to explore. The Cistercian Glenluce Abbey (40 minutes) and the 300-year-old Castle Kennedy Gardens (40 minutes) are some other cool spots you could visit that have a long history.

For some lazy types of activities, perhaps go for a brew and a wander around the Glenwhan Gardens (40 minutes), taste your way around the Crafty Distillery (20 minutes) or keep as quiet as you can be to get up and close with the deer around the Red Deer Range (35 minutes). There are more animals and activities for kids around Monreith Animal World (45 minutes).
