General

  • Family park close to a sandy Ayrshire beach
  • Nearby access to Glasgow and Ayr by railway adjacent to the site
  • Indoor pool, sports activities, restaurant, games room and playground

The residents of Saltcoats, a historic harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, used to spend the night in 'salt cots', hence the place’s name. Luckily, these days there are better facilities for a sojourn close to the town’s handsome beach, such as Sandylands Holiday Park in Ayrshire.

Guests can swim, splash and snorkel their way around the indoor pool or get stuck into some of the organised sports activities on site, and there are also kids’ clubs for children up to 11, featuring the usual Park Resorts group characters of the Starland Krew.

In the evenings, the Buccaneers Showbar runs theme nights, competitions and family shows, with live bands and cabarets regularly making an appearance to get toes tapping. For easy access to the surrounding area, a railway line runs adjacent to the holiday park – very nifty for visiting Glasgow, Ayr, Largs and beyond.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Single-sex parties of 3 or more people under 25 are not permitted on site.

Swimming pool access is included: please show your Entertainment pass.

Entertainment passes are included in the rate.

    Disliked:

Absolutely disgusted by lack of on site amenities. Food at the boathouse restaurant was expensive cold when served and items missing. Next day told the lass who served me and no apoligie offered no refund no acknowledgement at all. Entertainment was sparse. We went elsewhere for food etc due to price. On site shop closes for lunch and on site chip shop looked disgusting from outside again doesn't open till weekends. Absolutely terrible this place if run correctly and had more experienced staff would definitely do a lot more business. Anyway needless to say we were very disappointed with the whole break I mean who has to book to go too the pool ridiculous. Wouldn't recommend at all as it seemed to be a lot of traveller folk on site who more or less made their own rules etc

Pitches were very cramped together, also right next to a railway line, trains passing all day and night, fresh water taps, water trickles out tales about 40mind to fill water barrels, toilet blocks not very clean, travelers staying on pitches with transit vans

    Nothing

    Disliked:

With reference to my reservation for a motorhome pitch at Sandylands, which I booked through Pitch-up. I have to say that I was disappointed and dismayed at the pitch offered.

Firstly, having viewed the pitch offered, I asked Parkdean if any alternative was available, but they were fully booked.

I tried to get a refund, but Pitch-up's no-quibble guarantee is only applicable if the site were unable to provide suitable accommodation.  In my opinion the pitch was not fit for purpose for the following reasons.

    1. The pitch backs straight onto the main railway line to Glasgow/Edinburgh. The back of our motorhome would have been 1 ft from passing high-speed trains.

    2. We asked for hard standing (ours is a 4 tonne vehicle), but would have to drive across sloping grass to reach it, running the risk of getting stuck.

    3. Also there is a pitch in front of that allocated to us, so we wouldn't be able to leave when that pitch is accommodated. As we had a ferry to catch early in the morning, this could be an issue, Especially as the site is apparently full!

    4. Next to these pitches is a rubbish dumping area for park workmen, I guess. Most unpleasant.

    5. The pitch is tiny. As a seasoned motorhomer, I can state that it is the smallest pitch i have ever encountered.

This is meant to be a holiday! It's not even a cheap site. As we didn't feel happy staying at Sandylands, we had to park by the roadside overnight, as there was nowhere else available near the ferry terminal.

Parkdean would have been prepared to refund me and did offer a pitch at another site 20 minutes away (too far to risk the drive, should it prove unsuitable again, also the early start would make it unsuitable), but we bought through Pitch-up and you will not offer a refund.

    not a lot.

    Disliked:

muddy pitch, very poor lighting, rough cast pitch for awning, traveller site taking around 90% of touring pitches. Requested uplift of dog poo on pitch where awning would have been, still waiting for the removal when we left. Showers and toilet block was smelling of urine, used bic razors lying all over showers floor.

    Disliked:

Touring pitches are terrible. They are uneven . Grass/mud area surrounding pitches is like a bog, 4 wheel drive is a must unless pitch is road side. Toilets and showers in need of Some attention , Although not the worst. Power points need looking at, some don’t work especially when it rains.

Local attractions

The landscapes in this part of Ayrshire are stunning, so it’s no surprise that some of the country’s most famed championship golf courses, including Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry, can be found in the area.

As the birthplace of Robert Burns, Ayrshire is also rich in cultural attractions and museums relating to Scotland’s national poet.

It’s easy to hop aboard the nearby ferry at Ardrossan for a day trip across the Firth of Clyde to Arran - the journey usually takes less than an hour and passengers regularly see dolphins during the crossing.

Arran has miles of beautiful forest and coastal walks, more great golf courses, and attractions such as Brodick Castle and the Arran Heritage Museum to explore.

The railway line that passes Sandylands Holiday Park also runs a limited service to the likes of Glasgow and Ayr, should visitors fancy exploring the area by train.

Must see

  • Scottish Maritime Museum (3.9 miles)
  • Burns National Heritage Park (15.1 miles)
  • Culzean Castle & Country Park (19.3 miles)
