Sandylands Holiday Park: The play area

General

  • Family park close to a sandy Ayrshire beach
  • Nearby access to Glasgow and Ayr by railway adjacent to the site
  • Indoor pool, sports activities, restaurant, games room and playground

The residents of Saltcoats, a historic harbour town on the west coast of Scotland, used to spend the night in 'salt cots', hence the place’s name. Luckily, these days there are better facilities for a sojourn close to the town’s handsome beach, such as Ayrshire's Sandylands Holiday Park.

Guests can swim, splash and snorkel their way around the indoor pool or get stuck into some of the organised sports activities on site, and there are also kids’ clubs for children up to 11, featuring the usual Parkdean Resorts group characters of the Starland Krew.

In the evenings, the Buccaneers Showbar runs theme nights, competitions and family shows, with live bands and cabarets regularly making an appearance to get toes tapping. For easy access to the surrounding area, a railway line runs adjacent to the holiday park – very nifty for visiting Glasgow, Ayr, Largs and beyond.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Single-sex parties of three or more people under 25 are not permitted on site.

Swimming pool access is included: please show your Entertainment pass.

Entertainment passes are included in the rate.

The spread of facilities to keep the kids entertained.

    Several things :(
The facilities; toilets and the pool were not as clean as they should have been. Pandemic aside - far more cleaning is required. Squirting some disinfectant over an area does not fix the problem - the area needs scrubbing.
Ordering at the bar or the restaurant HAD to be through the app - which was difficult to navigate, didn't store details such as your card and was REALLY cumbersome. This must be costing Parkdean huge losses as so many people were complaining and disgruntled and ended up conceding defeat rather than persevering.
Lastly the staff were ATROCIOUS. The lifeguards were too busy learning dance moves, playing on their Ipads - or in once instance sleeping to have rescued an endangered child. The waiting staff were not interested - there seemed to be a lot of them but weren't interested in customer service or helping with the app.

Don’t stay here. Very disappointed as park dean sites are usually good. Touring area was cramped. Toilet and shower block was filthy. The website claims to be right on the beach. However the bridge was shut off so there was a mile long hike to the beach. We were right next to the train track. Could hear the sea , but couldn’t see it. Even the surrounding area was run down. Wouldn’t stay here again.

The staff were fantastic. Super friendly and helpful. The food in the boathouse was amazing. Everything was cooked fresh. The portions were huge and the app made it super easy to order. Loved the entertainment and the bingo. Also super close to Saltcoats beach which is just amazing.

    Disliked:

The touring pitch was right away at the end and there is only one tap for fresh water and 1 chemical disposal point so its a bit of a walk to get water etc. The shower block is extremely outdated and needs an absolute update. The park itself is rundown looking. Not up to the same standard as Southerness. Now this is not the parks fault, but the smell in the morning is unbearable. Its rotten seaweed. Now when i say unbearable i mean people walking abouut covering there faces and holding their noses. Makes it so you dont want to breathe it in. We couldnt sit out in the sun because of it. But as i said its not something anyone can help.

Local attractions

The landscapes in this part of Ayrshire are stunning, so it’s no surprise that some of the country’s most famed championship golf courses, including Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry, can be found in the area.

As the birthplace of Robert Burns, Ayrshire is also rich in cultural attractions and museums relating to Scotland’s national poet.

It’s easy to hop aboard the nearby ferry at Ardrossan for a day trip across the Firth of Clyde to Arran – the journey usually takes less than an hour and passengers regularly see dolphins during the crossing.

Arran has miles of beautiful forest and coastal walks, more great golf courses, and attractions such as Brodick Castle and the Arran Heritage Museum to explore.

The railway line that passes Sandylands Holiday Park also runs a limited service to the likes of Glasgow and Ayr, should visitors fancy exploring the area by train.

Must see

  • Scottish Maritime Museum (3.9 miles)
  • Burns National Heritage Park (15.1 miles)
  • Culzean Castle & Country Park (19.3 miles)
