General

  • Peaceful rural site on 40 acres of farm and woods a mile from Catrine
  • Half an hour's drive from the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayr
  • Wildlife walks, pony rides and Ayr river fishing on site

A serene spot with rural views all around, ripe for hours of nature walks and fishing, but with the added bonus of easy access directly off the A76 – what a winning combo.

There are woods and fields all around at Catrine House, a 40-acre rural site on the banks of the Ayr river. Hens and cows reside on the family-run farm, and there’s plenty of space for kids and dogs (or released-from-the-office grownups) to run about and let off steam among the woods and open spaces.

The Ayr river runs through the farm’s grounds, so bring your kit for a bit of fishing, or enlist some expert help from the owners if you need a little tuition in the skills. The friendly folks on site can also organise wildlife-spotting walks and pony rides around the estate for an extra charge.

The vibe here may be decidedly rural, but you’re hardly cut off in the middle of nowhere: there’s an excellent café a mile away in Catrine, and a couple of food pubs within a few minutes’ drive. If you can’t be enticed away from your countryside idyll you’re welcome to light up a barbie, or have dinner delivered to the site from the local Chinese takeaway.

    Friendly lafy

    Disliked:

The campsite is located less than 100 metres from a busy A road, where traffic runs all night. It was very noisy.  This wasn't mentioned in the description.

Neither was the fact that there was no hot water to the 'shower block' which seemed to be under conversion from a failed ice cream parlour. The showers are electric but we didn't dare test them, having seen the rats' nest of wiring that led to them (picture attached), and being a little nervous of what might be lurking in the large gaps beneath the shower trays. Pictures attached.  One men's shower and one ladies' shower won't be enough when more than one couple are staying.

The toilets were clean and lovely but again no hot water, and no heating despite heaters being present.

Finally, the electric hookup was a cluster of four, attached to a three pin plug inside the building and draped through a window.  Luckily we were the only guests, as we could park very close to it and not trail our cable across the road. Pictures attached

Other pitches around the site had cables that were punched through big holes in barn walls. It all looked most unsafe and uncared-for.

We made the mistake of paying upfront for three nights but left after one.

Everything is very accessible, water, electricity and toilets right next to hard standing pitch. Short walk to empty waste water etc. Very friendly lady who greeted us and answered any questions. Fantastic grounds for our dogs to run around and explore. Chickens wandering the grounds also and lovely wildlife to observe. Towns very close by, a great Tesco about 7 miles away and in the opposite direction is a lovely town, mauchline.

Advertised as having clubhouse/common area - closed. Showers - nowhere to be seen. Electric hookup was one broken plug and one working, on a stick with a bucket on it.

Seems like a mixture of stored caravans returning slowly to nature and people living there. No real facilities. No one was there when we arrived, called the number on the sign to no answer, then went to our booking email and called the land line number and got an answer. Very nice lady but the site is a mess. Looks like it might be nice during the peak season when things are open but a shambles when we arrived. We’d paid in full but left after less than an hour.

From the manager...

Sorry I missed you guys by five minutes as I was dealing with other campers down by the river. The bucket with a stick is in the “caravan storage area” not the campsite. Our brand new toilets and showers are open 24/7 and have never ever been closed as we are open all year round. Admittedly the grass was needing cut I do hope you give us another chance if you are in the area

Local attractions

Rabbie Burns fans will do well around this area: it’ll take you around half an hour to get to Ayr to visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and the poet’s childhood home, now known as Burns Cottage. The 15th-century Brig o’ Doon (the setting for Tam o' Shanter) is a short trot from these attractions, and you can finish your day following in Burns’ footsteps with a pint at Poosie Nansies Inn, a couple of miles from the site.

Ayr’s also a great place for a seaside walk or beach paddle; for more activity, there’s a riding centre 20 minutes’ drive from Catrine House and a golf course just a couple of minutes away. Horsey types may well also want to drop in on the gentle giants at Blackstone Clydesdales, 10 minutes away.

For a slice of history, take a 20-minute ramble to the rock art site at Ballochmyle, or drive for 10 minutes to the 2,000-acre estate of Dumfries House, home to some gorgeous gardens and a splendid Chippendale collection.

Must see

  • Burns National Heritage Park (12.5 miles)
  • Scottish Maritime Museum (15.3 miles)
