Catrine House: Fully serviced hardstanding and grass pitches

General

  • Peaceful rural site on 40 acres of farm and woods a mile from Catrine
  • Half an hour's drive from the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayr
  • Wildlife walks, firepits and Ayr river fishing on site

A serene spot with rural views all around, ripe for hours of nature walks and fishing, but with the added bonus of easy access directly off the A76 – what a winning combo.

Catrine House is a family-run campsite that's been operating here for more than 60 years. The Ayr river runs through the farm’s grounds and a river path runs along the site boundary, so bring your kit for a bit of fishing, or enlist some expert help from the owners if you need a little tuition in the skills. Lots of walks (including circular walks) also start from here, and maps are provided.

The vibe here may be decidedly rural, but you’re hardly cut off in the middle of nowhere: there’s an excellent café a mile away in Catrine, and a couple of food pubs within a few minutes’ drive. If you can’t be enticed away from your countryside idyll, you’re welcome to light up a firpit (provided; logs are sold on site too), or have dinner delivered to the site from the local Chinese, Indian or fish and chip shop.

Please note

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Nice, friendly site, the owner is very helpful, lots of advice and suggestions for places to visit and sights to see.
Facilities are good, showers and toilets are clean and tidy.
Our pitch was hard standing with plenty of space with power and water, most of the ones we saw were similar.
The location is good, just off the main road with good access.
There is a warm communal room inside the main wooden lodge, with sofas and comfortable chairs, central heating and a log burner.
There is a selection of books and DVDs for loan.
There is WIFI on site but we found that we were too far away from the source, in the lodge it was fine, but we had 4g so didn't have a problem.

    Disliked:

There is nothing that we disliked, there is an amount of noise from the main road, we were about 100m or so away, but we didn't find this invasive at all.

The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The facilities were lovely and clean. Probably the cleanest and most modern we've stayed at so far. It was a nice touch to have a common room, wifi etc. Sadly we didn't get a chance to visit the walled garden as we arrived late and had to leave early. We did do a bit of stargazing though as there were lovely dark skies. Wish we had more time as it was just lovely vibes all round at this place.

Local attractions

Rabbie Burns fans will do well around this area: it’ll take you around half an hour to get to Ayr to visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and the poet’s childhood home, now known as Burns Cottage. The 15th-century Brig o’ Doon (the setting for Tam o' Shanter) is a short trot from these attractions, and you can finish your day following in Burns’ footsteps with a pint at Poosie Nansies Inn, a couple of miles from the site.

Ayr’s also a great place for a seaside walk or beach paddle; for more activity, there’s a riding centre 20 minutes’ drive from Catrine House and a golf course just a couple of minutes away. Horsey types may well also want to drop in on the gentle giants at Blackstone Clydesdales, 10 minutes away.

For a slice of history, take a 20-minute ramble to the rock art site at Ballochmyle, or drive for 10 minutes to the 2,000-acre estate of Dumfries House, home to some gorgeous gardens and a splendid Chippendale collection.

Must see

  • Burns National Heritage Park (12.3 miles)
  • Scottish Maritime Museum (15.1 miles)
  • Culzean Castle & Country Park (19.9 miles)
