Cairngorms Glamping: Outdoor breaks in Scotland

General

  • Quiet and scenic campsite in Britain's largest national park
  • A mile from Strathdon; an hour and a quarter by road from Aberdeen
  • Small on-site shop and animal petting corner

For spectacular scenery, there's nothing quite like a stint in the Cairngorms National Park. They do rugged and remote rather well in this part of Scotland – the area is home to a quarter of the UK's rare and endangered species, four of its five highest mountains and over 60 separate lochs.

Exploring all of the above day after day is tiring work, so you'll want to find somewhere to rest up and relax after gallivanting through the Highlands. Enter Cairngorms Glamping, a low-key but scenic site in a quiet corner of Aberdeenshire.

All plots here come with their own water and power supply and have an excellent outlook over the neighbouring countryside. There's plenty of space to spread out over the well-kept grounds, plus a small on-site shop where you can pick up local butcher/baker goods and locally made gifts.

Cairngorms Glamping also has an animal petting corner, where friendly creatures like pygmy goats, alpacas and a donkey look forward to meeting you. Up at the top of a hill, there's also a naturally occurring pond, so dragonflies, ducks and other wildlife can be spotted too.

Cairngorms Glamping is roughly a mile from the village of Strathdon, which is home to a small but well-stocked supermarket.

Stunning location and incredible hosts. Facilities were spotless. It's a campsite that has something to suit everyone. I enjoyed petting the animals on site and walks very well sign posted. They really do care about their guests and came to my aid on an extremely windy night.
Couldn't fault this place at all and loved my stay.

Hot Food hut on site good for tenting groups, secluded site for those who want the quiet life. easy booking and group felt welcome on arrival. Reasonably priced site.

    Disliked:

Although tent pitches were short grass and level, need to bring rock pegs as ground extremely hard and rocky.
Only one shower available for tenters so need to plan your day well.

Campsite is situated in a lovely amphitheatre with great views all round.
The family who own the site were lovely and chatty if you wanted to talk to them.
Top highlights for the site include the option to get a fire pit with cheap logs sold on site, if the weather holds up this is a great spot to spend the night with some flames and some wine.
Plenty of animals on site for the animal lover. Luna and Flash the families dogs were very friendly. There is a large collection of farm animals on site you can wonder around with too including a pony and some sheep (not that interesting in people), as well as a very friendly donkey and goats. Dumbledore the Billy goat was a great character, feed him some grass and he'll bounce up wagging his tail when ever you come past.
Before we arrived at the site there had been a large storm so trees were being felled on the hill close to the site for safety. This of course created noise, which is understandable. Whilst we were staying at the site, an older coulple who seem to of taken their camper van on the road just to have a sit in a field were complaining about the noise as if the staff could do anything about it, seemed to be handled very professionally by the staff.

Was fairly peaceful, the animal corner was a lovely touch, everyone was well spaced out. Also has nice open views across the fields.

    Disliked:

Wasn’t too busy when we were there, but during busier times two toilets would not be enough. Especially as one toilet has a shower in. The toilets themselves aren’t very private either. One is outside with huge gaps in the door (which also made it cold showering) and the inside one is right next to the shop and not fully enclosed.

Local attractions

Looking to lounge about locally? Goodbrand and Ross gift shop and restaurant is a good place to grab a bite to eat or buy a few presents for folk back at home, while the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games take place annually a couple of miles to the north. For further typically Scottish attractions, try visiting one of the many distilleries in the area; the closest is roughly 30 minutes away.

The Cairngorms is also uncommonly rich in castles, including the well-preserved ruins of Kildrummy Castle (20 minutes) and gorgeous 17th-century Braemar Castle (40 minutes). Balmoral (30 minutes), the long-term summer residence of the British royal family, will also be high up on the list of those seeking impressive architecture, art and antiques.

Your hosts also recommend taking the time to drive out to Landmark Forest Adventure Park (an hour), a kid-oriented spot with a climbing wall, high ropes course, maze and rollercoaster. You might also like to drive east to the Grampian Transport Museum's top collection of exhibits (35 minutes), or to carry on all the way down to the North Sea coast at Aberdeen (an hour and a quarter).

Must see

  • Balmoral Castle (11.6 miles)
  • Glenlivet Estate (12.1 miles)
  • The Glenlivet Distillery Visitor Centre (14.7 miles)
