  • Spacious and well-kept country park just outside Alford, Aberdeenshire
  • Aberdeen, Balmoral Castle and Lecht Ski Centre within an hour's drive
  • Two coffee shops, playground, walks and fishing on site; dogs welcome
Well, this is a rather grand setting… Haughton Holiday Park is within the lovely Haughton Country Park, the well-kept wooded grounds of a splendid mansion house just outside the Aberdeenshire village of Alford. There are acres and acres of woodland and open space to roam around here, with trails running through the woods and along the banks of the River Don, which runs through the park. Sound like the kind of thing your dog might enjoy? Good news – they’re welcome to join you for a stay here, and they’ll also be allowed to accompany you to the dog-friendly courtyard coffee shop. In fact, that’s one of a pair of coffee shops on site – the other is in the main house, which also houses the reception area and a well-stocked shop. Other handy facilities on site include a playground, a launderette and drying room (essential for those planning outdoor activities), a chemical disposal point and motorhome service area, and bathrooms with toilets and showers (including wheelchair-accessible options). Alford makes an excellent base for a break in this area – not only does it have shops and places to eat, it’s also home to a golf course, a pump track, a ski centre, a skatepark and a transport museum with vintage trains and buses. Cast your net a little wider and you can be hiking in the Cairngorms National Park, exploring National Trust properties, sipping whisky at distilleries or ambling around Aberdeen (about 50 minutes’ drive away).

Local attractions

You won’t have to go far to find some activity here – there's fishing on site, or you can play golf and try the dry ski slope in Alford. While you’re there, stop in to the Grampian Transport Museum (three minutes’ drive) to see the bus collection and the Alford Valley Community Railway. The edge of the Cairngorms National Park is about a half-hour drive away, so you may like to plan hikes or mountain biking in these scenic surrounds. In winter the Lecht Ski Centre (50 minutes) opens up its slopes for skiing and snowboarding, with lessons and kit hire available. Not up for such intrepid adventures? Head off instead to one of the area’s heritage buildings – perhaps the Jacobean Craigievar Castle (15 minutes), the sprawling Castle Fraser, Garden & Estate (20 minutes) or the grand Leith Hall (25 minutes). A little further away but worth the trip is Balmoral Castle (55 minutes), famously Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite. Alternatively, a similar length of drive will take you to the distilleries of Dufftown (50 minutes).
