Camping pitches for tents

  • Family-friendly camping on a farm 10 minutes’ drive from Ballycastle
  • Giant’s Causeway half an hour’s drive; Cushendun Beach 15 minutes
  • Play area and mini golf on a dark skies site with grazing livestock
Here’s the chance to spend quality time outdoors with loved ones, with loads of space to roam and for kids to play. Want to experience rural life on a working hill farm? The folks running the family campsite at Watertop Farm, 10 minutes’ drive from Ballycastle in County Antrim have been welcoming guests for more than 30 years, so they must be doing something right. They’re doing absolutely everything right as it turns out. For starters: fully serviced pitches with hot showers, a play area, monster slide and mini-golf course for kids, and lots of cuddly livestock to befriend, plus safe off-road paths around the farm for campers to explore. Having said that, if you’re looking for party nights, kids’ clubs and TVs in your tent, this site is possibly not your cup of tea... On the other hand, if you’re after spectacular coast and hill views, and traffic-free hiking or biking routes amid forests, waterfalls and mountains, you’re definitely in the right place. As a couple of added bonuses, you’re pretty much guaranteed quiet nights of sound sleep in the peaceful north-coast countryside, and thanks to the lack of light pollution hereabouts, on clear nights you can spot a gazillion stars twinkling up above.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The animals, lovely walks, the cottage for rainy evenings, the lovely owners. The bathroom, showers and kitchen. The mini golf. Very well maintained site, beautifully situated.

Disliked: The wind, which obviously can't be helped, but maybe some more sheltered pitches could be created down the bottom of the field

From the manager: Thanks for leaving a review. All of our showers are individual cubicles - 1/2 shower enclosure 1/2 space to change so each is private with its own sink, mirror and locked door. There are a couple of hooks and a wee folding seat to set things on (tucked under the sink for space) but we will consider how we can improve the hanging space. The facilities are cleaned daily but there is a mop provided to dry the floor in between should you need to, but not everyone does!
We live on the farm so there is usually some-one around and contact numbers displayed at the check in area in case we are off site or you need anything. Having self service check in means guests are free to arrive at any time, not worrying about rushing to get here.
Ah the midges, unfortunately not much we can do about them but I'll take your feedback on board :)

Fully-serviced gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nice farm setting, well signposted and a nice welcome from Patsy when we arrived. The pitches were fine for our one-night stay and had all the services we needed. There were LOTS of midges so we didn't venture out and about though.

Disliked: The showers were just OK - there were LOTS of midges hanging out all over the shower cubicle, so it made it an uncomfortable experience. The wash hand basin was unclean and both hooks on the back of the door were broken so there wasn't anywhere to hang clothes. The chemical disposal was a large tube in the ground, located under a tree, so I got loads of midge bites just emptying it.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We stayed here early May; very cold at night, perfect weather during the day.
Staying here was absolutely fabulous!
Great location near Ballycastle and about 20minutes from major tourist spots in the area.
The site was well maintained, cleaned, and the farm was lovely! The showers were spectacular and great pressure. Bathrooms and shower rooms were always warm.
We're already talking about returning later on in the summer.

Disliked: The bathrooms were soooooo far away! As someone who constantly runs to the bathroom through the night, this was my only issue.
This is not a dislike just a FYI; the GPS takes you to another glamping site. Watertop is just a mile on down the way.
There was no wifi, BUT cell/data service is fantastic.

Local attractions

Hikers should definitely pack their walking boots; there are a myriad routes close by, ranging from the soaring cliffs at Fair Head (10 minutes’ drive to the car park) to Ronan’s Way along the Glendun River (15 minutes) and the bracing coastal routes in the Causeway Coast National Landscape, taking in the truly spectacular basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway (half an hour). When a day on the beach beckons, Murlough Bay is a secluded shingle expanse ideal for rock pooling, while Cushendun Beach (both 15 minutes) is a wide sweep of soft sand curling round a bay. The site is also about 40 minutes from the famed surfing beaches around Portrush on Antrim’s north coast. Springing to fame as a ‘Game of Thrones’ location, The Dark Hedges (25 minutes) are a twisting, turning avenue of beech trees planted in the 18th century. Equally stunning and mysterious is Loughareema (half an hour’s walk), a ‘vanishing lake’ that fills and empties at random. It can be reached on foot from the site.
