At The Cowshed: View from the car park

General

  • Shepherd's huts at a small, friendly site in the village of Kilmington
  • On the Wiltshire Cycleway, two miles from Stourhead Estate
  • Comfy beds, hot showers, shared kitchen, firepit and hot tub

At The Cowshed is a small cluster of handmade traditional shepherd’s huts in the Wiltshire village of Kilmington, within the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Each of the smart huts has been kitted out with comfy beds (with bedding supplied), and they share a well-equipped kitchen that has plenty of utensils and basic provisions plus a hob, an oven and a fridge (in which you’ll find breakfast packs to get your morning off to a cracking start). Nearby are a couple of toilets and hot showers with lots of nifty touches including body wash and hooks to hang all your bits and bobs on.

And the facilities list goes on… that shared area also has a barbecue space, a firepit for chilly evenings and a hot tub for swish soaks (most welcome after a day of hiking or bike riding in the gorgeous surrounds). One thing you’ll not be provided with is wifi – and there’s little mobile signal either, so you can really switch off and settle into the important business of properly relaxing.

Speaking of hikes and bike rides, this is a splendid spot for both – the site is on the Wiltshire Cycleway and near to plenty of woodland, quiet paths and pretty villages that all merit a visit on foot or two wheels (Stourhead Estate’s just a couple of miles away too). If you need ideas, maps or pub recommendations, have a chat with friendly hosts Richard and Charlotte (they’ll also be able to sort cycle storage to keep your steed dry, or warm your boots on the Aga if you get caught in a downpour…)

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Please note that the hot tub is not available through the winter, from 1 November to 31 March.

Coronavirus update: From 12 April 2021 to 17 May 2021 the site will be adapted so each hut has a private toilet, shower, barbecue and seating area.

Lovely location, very welcoming hosts with little touches taken care of. Breakfast pack was amazing and huts and facilities had all you need.

    Disliked:

Shared covered area is small so bare in mind if booking when likely to be rainy. Worked well for us as only 2 of 4 huts in use and got to know other hut well. However if all 4 huts were in use in weather we had shared space wouldn’t have fit us all. Still amazing though just bare in mind if booking for late October!

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback. Obviously due to the terrible weather when you stayed it meant that under cover space was always needed. Many use the hut they sleep in as their shelter. The shared communal area has seating for 10/11. Do come back when it is dry then the whole field is available as well as the fire pit area, bbq area and obviously the hot tub does not matter what ever the weather!

Everything! Very clean, well organized place with a lot of thought put into the detail to make it extra special. Owners were fab and friendly. Wonderful walks nearby.

    Disliked:

Communal area including kitchen is smaller than imagined.

From the manager...

I am sorry that you felt the area was smaller than imagined. There are several areas (Kitchen/BBQ shelter/outside firepit/undercover shack) we kept areas separate so everyone had their own space if not holidaying together, but equally should everyone want to be together there is a whole field to be able to move chairs etc around in. Kind regards, Charlotte

Great rural location although easy access to local attractions,
    Friendly and welcoming owner.
Very clean facilities and well equipt,
    Really enjoyed our stay here.

    Disliked:

The hot tub is powered by a log burner which is great in itself, although the pipe going into the hot tub is rather exposed and although there is signs expressing this my daughter got burnt on her arm quite badly, she was supervised at all times and I did keep asking her to stay away from the pipes she’s 11 and sensibly, I guess accidents happen, but surely there would be some sort of cover that’s available to cover the exposed pipe but still allows water flow

From the manager...

I am sorry this happened, i didn't know until now! i do hope her arm is ok. We will arrange for a grid to be put over it. Kind regards Charlotte
