  • Shepherd's huts at a small, friendly site in the village of Kilmington
  • On the Wiltshire Cycleway, two miles from Stourhead Estate
  • Comfy beds, hot showers, shared kitchen, firepit and hot tub
At The Cowshed is a small cluster of handmade traditional shepherd’s huts in the Wiltshire village of Kilmington, within the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Each of the smart huts has been kitted out with comfy beds (with bedding supplied), and they share a well-equipped kitchen that has plenty of utensils and basic provisions plus a hob, an oven and a fridge (in which you’ll find breakfast packs to get your morning off to a cracking start). Nearby are a couple of toilets and hot showers with lots of nifty touches including body wash and hooks to hang all your bits and bobs on. And the facilities list goes on… that shared area also has a barbecue space, a firepit for chilly evenings and a hot tub for swish soaks (most welcome after a day of hiking or bike riding in the gorgeous surrounds). One thing you’ll not be provided with is wifi – and there’s little mobile signal either, so you can really switch off and settle into the important business of properly relaxing. Speaking of hikes and bike rides, this is a splendid spot for both – the site is on the Wiltshire Cycleway and near to plenty of woodland, quiet paths and pretty villages that all merit a visit on foot or two wheels (Stourhead Estate’s just a couple of miles away too). If you need ideas, maps or pub recommendations, have a chat with friendly hosts Richard and Charlotte (they’ll also be able to sort cycle storage to keep your steed dry, or warm your boots on the Aga if you get caught in a downpour…)

Local attractions

Start off with a trip to the Stourhead Estate (five minutes' drive), a National Trust-run property with a historic house and smashing neo-classical garden centred around a gorgeous lake. Grottoes, decorative temples and a whole host of trees will keep you occupied for many an hour (and supply you with near-endless material for family games of I spy). If travelling with drowsy younger tots, it's also good to know that the flat, wide paths here are (by and large) buggy-friendly. Longleat (20 minutes) is another great Wiltshire estate where you can set out on self-driven safaris, making this another popular pick. But plenty more low-key attractions are ensconced in the local countryside too, like King Alfred's Tower (five minutes) and Frome (15 minutes), where there are lots of intriguing independent shops. Artsy holidaymakers are very well-served around here: they've got the Hauser and Wirth gallery and sculpture park (15 minutes) and Bath's Holburne Museum (40 minutes). Fans of trains, planes and automobiles, meanwhile, can head out to Haynes International Motor Museum (20 minutes) or for steam-powered trips on the East Somerset Railway (20 minutes).

Shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: Towels and bedding are provided. The hottub on a cool night looking up at the star's and the moon is lovely. There was a well equipped kitchen with cooker, kettle and toaster. The covered social /eating area was a relief when it rained, with the addition of a DAB radio. The wood for the fire was free and plentiful. The welcome breakfast pack was delicious. Great recycling facilities.

Disliked: There was no bin for non-recyclables. A mop would have been useful to clean the floors with when they got wet and muddy. There were no toilet brushes.

Shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: Outside dining room with woodburner was excellent. Lovely and quiet. Great hot tub. Breakfast a thoughtful touch.

Disliked: Left an expensive headlight torch behing and tried to contact them via text and email but to no avail. Bit of a shame. Was happy to pay postage.

Shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked: We had an absolutely wonderful weekend break here, Charlotte had been in contact with us a day or so before our arrival to check what time we were due to arrive which meant that we arrived to the fire already going AND a nice warm hot tub!
The kitchen area is small but had everything we needed from pots, pans, cutlery, mugs and even the odd wine glass. The breakfast pack was a lovely addition and also meant we didn't have to dash to the shops after a long drive down.
The showers and toilets were spotless too.
The only suggestion we had was that some solar/fairy lights around the hot tub area would be a lovely addition.
Location wise it's a great base for exploring the surrounding areas, we visited Wells, Cheddar and Bath which are all within 40/50 minute drive.
The site itself is very quiet (i'd recommend having a little look at google street view before you head off as it's very much a "blink and you'll miss it" turning off the main road.
Thanks for a great stay, we will definitely be back!

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely feedback, unfortunately because its an Area of outstanding natural beauty we can add any additional lighting only what we have planning for, but I do like the idea of some fairy lights! Hope to see you again
