  • Off-grid glamping in Wiltshire, 20 minutes’ drive from the Cotswolds
  • Cirencester 20 minutes’ drive; Bourton-on-the-Water 35 minutes
  • Well-equipped playground; dogs welcome; communal lodge
Between the town of Cricklade (five minutes’ drive) and the Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve (10 minutes) – or, on a larger scale, between Swindon and the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about 20 minutes from either) – Chelworth Fields Shepherd Huts is a peaceful spot from where to explore the attractions of Wiltshire. Guests here experience glamping, but maybe not as they might expect it. Sure, they’ll be cosily ensconced in a bespoke shepherd’s hut with views across expansive farmland, comfortable beds with vibrant blankets, and a kitchenette with the essentials (kettle, toaster, microwaves and fridge). However, the owners also underline the off-the-grid nature of a stay here. So turn off your phone, ditch the laptop and make the most of the blissful quiet on site to slow down, or to finally make progress with that book you just can’t seem to finish. And don’t worry about having to keep the kids entertained; chances are they’ll do just fine without much input from you, as they get to spend time on an excellently equipped playground with climbable structures and slides, plus tricycles for zipping around. Meanwhile, dogs might look forward to exploring the surrounding countryside, including areas like Webb’s Wood or Ravensroost Wood Nature Reserve (both 10 minutes). Ravensroost in particular is a popular birdwatching site, where you might spot woodpeckers, wrens and warblers in the spring (plus bats at dusk). In the evening, guests might head into Cricklade for a meal and a pint, or gather around the on-site barbecue areas and firepits. In addition to a communal lodge, there is plenty of outdoor seating for dining under the stars.

Local attractions

For most of your water-based needs, head to Cotswold Country Park & Beach (10 minutes’ drive), where facilities range from boat hire (including large swan pedalos), to paddleboard and kayak rentals, plus a vast inflatable water park. Those who prefer solid ground to water can have a go at miniature golf or a climbing wall. Cirencester (20 minutes) was an important Roman city, and that ancient heritage can be explored in the Corinium Museum, which is home to spectacular mosaics, metal brooches and figurines, sculptures and coins. Abbey Grounds Park has the remains of a Roman town wall. The pretty village of Bourton-on-the-Water (35 minutes) is known as the Venice of the Cotswolds for the five stone bridges spanning the River Windrush. Stroll along the river all the way to the Cotswold Motoring Museum, with its colourful collection of classic cars, and beyond, to the Model Village, where you might feel like a giant among the miniature reproductions of Bourton-on-the-Water’s buildings.
