  • Quiet family campsite a mile from Chapmanslade
  • Frome, Longleat and Bath city centre within 25 minutes' drive
  • Basic but well-equipped site on the grounds of a small working farm
Located a mile outside the village of Chapmanslade and close to the intersection of the A36 and the A3098, Thoulstone Park is a quiet campsite set on a small working farm next to a spacious stretch of parkland. With all of Wiltshire and Somerset on your doorstep, what are you waiting for? Thoulstone Park's simple facilities include access to well-maintained toilets and showers. While open fires aren't allowed here, you can hire an on-site firepit for toasty outdoor get-togethers (subject to availability). Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, and it's easy to make your four-legged friends feel included given how much green space is nearby for walks. If you have any questions about the local area or any requests that could help make your stay more special, the friendly owner is more than happy to help. Handily, the park is also very close to Chapmanslade, where there are amenities including a pub and a garden centre. The larger town of Westbury – home to a railway station, restaurants and supermarkets – is three miles away to the north-west (with Frome and Warminster roughly the same distance too), while the attractive Georgian city of Bath is 25 minutes away by road.

What customers say

This is a basic, quiet campsite with spacious pitches and a friendly, helpful owner. It's praised for its good value and convenient location for local attractions like Longleat. While some found the toilets and showers to be basic, others described them as clean and functional, with hot water. The site offers a relaxed atmosphere, with free-roaming animals like chickens and goats adding to the charm. Some guests noted traffic noise from the nearby A36, and a few commented on the short timer for the toilet/shower lights. The entrance can appear untidy to some, though this is often outweighed by the positive overall experience and owner's hospitality.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Nothing at all, sadly

Disliked Unfortunately, our experience was not a positive one. The site was difficult to find, and on arrival we were greeted by a man who appeared to run the site. We found his manner unwelcoming and quite abrupt, which immediately made us feel uncomfortable.

The entrance area was untidy, with various scrap items and vehicles visible, which did not create a great first impression. During our conversation, he asked several personal questions about our jobs before requesting payment, which felt intrusive.

We were also told, with a laugh, that there were four cockerels on site that would likely wake us at 4am. We were then advised that if the first shower did not warm up, we should get dressed, leave, and try another shower instead. This did not inspire confidence in the facilities.

As a couple, we felt increasingly uneasy and decided to leave rather than stay overnight. The overall appearance of the site and the welcome we received did not make us feel comfortable or relaxed, so we chose to find alternative accommodation.

Local attractions

Thoulstone Park is close to lots of local points of interest. Bratton Camp (10 minutes' drive), an English Heritage-managed hillfort built over 2,000 years ago, is just down the road, and next to it you can admire one of the most spectacular hillside White Horses in the South West. Frome (10 minutes), over the border in Somerset, has lots of similarly attractive features, with independent shops, cosy pubs and a town history museum full of local curios. Family-friendly big-hitters nearby include Longleat Safari Park (15 minutes), Wiltshire's answer to the wilds of the Serengeti. After visiting the animals, take the time to explore the historic halls of Longleat House, and make sure to try and navigate your way through the park's devilishly difficult hedge maze too. More days out are on offer in the historic village of Nunney (15 minutes), home to a moated 14th-century castle, while for underground adventures you could set off on a cave journey by boat at Wookey Hole (40 minutes), one of the most iconic caves in Britain. If that sounds like a recipe for claustrophobia, perhaps you’d rather opt for the wide open spaces of the Mendip Hills (30 minutes).
