Thoulstone Park: Rental tent exterior

General

  • Quiet family campsite a mile from Chapmanslade
  • Frome, Longleat and Bath city centre within 25 minutes' drive
  • Basic but well-equipped site on the grounds of a small working farm

Located a mile outside the village of Chapmanslade and close to the intersection of the A36 and the A3098, Thoulstone Park is a quiet campsite set on a small working farm next to a spacious stretch of parkland. With all of Wiltshire and Somerset on your doorstep, what are you waiting for?

Thoulstone Park's simple facilities include access to well-maintained toilets and showers. While open fires aren't allowed here, you can hire an on-site firepit for toasty outdoor get-togethers (subject to availability). Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, and it's easy to make your four-legged friends feel included given how much green space is nearby for walks. If you have any questions about the local area or any requests that could help make your stay more special, the friendly owner is more than happy to help.

Handily, the park is also very close to Chapmanslade, where there are amenities including a pub and a garden centre. The larger town of Westbury – home to a railway station, restaurants and supermarkets – is three miles away to the north-west (with Frome and Warminster roughly the same distance too), while the attractive Georgian city of Bath is 25 minutes away by road.

Enjoyed our stay as we told could pitch up anywhere and no designated pitch sizes nice and quiet

    Disliked:

Only one shower had a light out of the 2 showers and 2 toilets and the owner said this was due to covid regulations "it seems as this is an excuse of not spending the money to make it upto standard" and the area very uneven. the entrance to the tent site was very poor rubbish rubble dirt overhanging thorn trees "which scratched our vehicle" uneven ground tight turning and old disused greenhouse made getting onto site not the best impression 🙄 we have a Focus ST if we would have turned up in we wouldn't have been able to get onto the site! Otherwise if Scary was to tidy and improve these issues it would make a lovely place as he is a friendly host !

can pitch up anywhere rather than having marked out spaces
    quiet (except noise from road)
nice toilet/shower block (2 toilets and 2 showers)
    plenty of level pitches
areas of nice short grass for pitching and areas of longer grass with flowers, butterflies and birds and trees surrounding the field

    Disliked:

    no washing up facility
approach to pitch area quite bumpy, would be unsuitable for cars with low suspension
approach to site/pitch a bit messy (wasn't sure when arriving this was the official campsite)

Love love loved it, definitely going back next year! Lovely secluded quite site, kids thought the geese were cool! Toilet block was clean and very well maintained. We turned up late at night and 'scary' (who is a pussy cat really!) Couldn't try and help more, after a long drive I needed a cuppa so took kids to the shop whilst he helped my husband set up, even brought his van over so he could see!!
Come back from longleat (15 mins away) and chilled for a while with the kids before going for food, he came over with his lovely partner and the dogs, I then lost my daughter for am hour whilst she was playing frizbee!! Can't wait to go back next year!!

Local attractions

Thoulstone Park is close to lots of local points of interest. Bratton Camp (10 minutes' drive), an English Heritage-managed hillfort built over 2,000 years ago, is just down the road, and next to it you can admire one of the most spectacular hillside White Horses in the South West. Frome (10 minutes), over the border in Somerset, has lots of similarly attractive features, with independent shops, cosy pubs and a town history museum full of local curios.

Family-friendly big-hitters nearby include Longleat Safari Park (15 minutes), Wiltshire's answer to the wilds of the Serengeti. After visiting the animals, take the time to explore the historic halls of Longleat House, and make sure to try and navigate your way through the park's devilishly difficult hedge maze too.

More days out are on offer in the historic village of Nunney (15 minutes), home to a moated 14th-century castle, while for underground adventures you could set off on a cave journey by boat at Wookey Hole (40 minutes), one of the most iconic caves in Britain. If that sounds like a recipe for claustrophobia, perhaps you’d rather opt for the wide open spaces of the Mendip Hills (30 minutes).
