Where can you fall asleep to the distant roar of lions or the howling of monkeys – without travelling to Africa? At Longleat Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, that’s where. Sitting in Longleat Estate’s mature parkland, the immaculately maintained site is just across Half Mile Pond (in the middle of which is Monkey Island, hence those faraway primate calls…) from Longleat Safari Park. The Elizabethan elegance of Longleat House is 10 minutes’ walk away, as is the animal park, though if you choose to do the drive-through safari, you’ll have to drive – oh, all of five minutes. Managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, the site is open to both members and non-members; however, members benefit from special rates (the price displayed). Non-members will need to select the £15 per night extra or buy a membership (which gives you discounted access to all Club sites for a year). Family-friendly facilities on site include a play area with a miniature adventure course (plus a games and TV room – great for when the weather stops outdoor play). Longleat also extends a warm welcome to canine companions, with a dog park on site and plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding parkland. Within a 15-minute drive there’s a fishing pond stocked with trout; several golf courses (both 18-hole and miniature); and the ancient woodlands and chalk grasslands of Cranborne Chase National Landscape, where you might climb Melbury Beacon (40 minutes) or Win Green (45 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Blackmore Vale.

Route directions

Follow sat nav to The White Hart pub (postcode BA12 7PH) then follow the brown tourist signs to the site. Alternatively, turn left off the A36 Warminster bypass (Salisbury - Frome) at the roundabout onto the A362 (signposted Frome). In about 0.5 mile at the roundabout take the A362 (third exit) to Frome. After 2.25 miles turn into Lane End next to the White Hart pub. Continue past the Safari Park Entrance and Stalls Farm before turning left again. The site entrance is 200 metres on left. This is the only permitted entry route for caravans and motorhomes. Please note that estate routes may change in the case of a special event. Note: When using sat nav for directions to the site, please use the postcode BA12 7PH (pub at Lane End on the A362), and follow the brown direction signs to site. If coming from the Warminster direction on the A362 please do not attempt to take the first left after the Royal Oak pub as this lane is far too narrow.

Local attractions

You can choose between savouring afternoon tea on a vintage train or having a go at driving a steam engine at the East Somerset Railway at Cranmore (20 minutes’ drive). A five-mile round trip takes just over half an hour, after which you can admire the heritage stock, both steam engines and diesels. A National Trust property, Stourhead (25 minutes) is an elegant villa with a colonnaded entrance and collections of period furniture and art. Spreading around a lake, its expansive grounds are dotted with classical temples (and the Roman-inspired Pantheon), family monuments and a small Gothic cottage. Possibly the world’s best-known stone circle, Stonehenge (35 minutes) continues to puzzle historians and archaeologists, who have yet to work out how a Neolithic society managed to move such massive boulders or what purpose the entire structure served. But you don’t have to know the reasons to gaze in awe at this monumental construction.
