  • Small family-run site 200 metres from the Kennet & Avon Canal
  • Walking, cycling and fishing along the canal towpath
  • Within easy reach of Avebury, Stonehenge and Bath
Are these ducks among the cutest neighbours you might see waddling along at any waterside site in the land? This quacking state of affairs is at family-run Foxhangers Canalside Holidays in Wiltshire, a peaceful place 200 metres from the Kennet & Avon Canal, which flows placidly between Reading and Bristol. Foxhangers is on a 90-acre farm, around a mile from the village of Rowde and three miles from Devizes. Famed south-west destinations including Avebury and Stonehenge, the Georgian city of Bath and Longleat Safari Park are all within easy reach. The farm is next to the canal towpath, an all-weather path for cycling or walking along its flight of 18th-century locks along to Devizes or into the Wiltshire countryside. The canal is also well stocked with fish: angling licences can be bought on site. Foxhangers has showers and toilets in a block around 65 metres from the accommodation fields, as well as a washing-up area and chemical disposal. Gas cylinders are available to buy.

Its excellent location provides easy access to the Kennet & Avon Canal for lovely walks and cycling. Electric grass pitch

Liked Nice quiet site in general with fairly decent views of the night sky and a 5 min walk to the canal for walks. The toilet block is a short walk to the farmhouse and has unisex set up as just a small site of 20 pitches. It has 2 toilets, 2 showers (not push button, hooray!) 2 sinks, then 2 washing up sinks in the corridor. All are kept pretty clean and showers are hot.
The pitches are average sized and there is electric hook up and water allocated for sharing between every 2 pitches, so no lugging water across fields which is nice.

Disliked Despite their being electric for every couple of pitches, these are included in the price, but there is no option for a discount if you do not need it, which I thought was a bit unfair.
The pitches are on a gentle slope so you will need levelling blocks, but no doubt a bit Rollie for people in tents.
You have to commit to booking for 2 nights on a weekend.

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked The pitch we stayed at was a generous size and we liked the fact that water was conveniently located between pitches. The site is just a short walk from the canal tow path where we were able to take interesting walks past the Caen Hill locks.

Disliked The slope of the field made levelling our ‘van a challenge and the chemical disposal point was very basic but functional .

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked The location was fantastic, beautiful scenery, wildlife and walks. We booked a large pitch just to give us more room with the dog. Quiet campsite, except the road which we already were aware of in other comments. Yes the facilities are dated but as long as you’ve got somewhere to wash and dump what’s the problem?! Would stay again. Lasagna at the Three Magpies was top! Also we had a roof tent (it says on here it’s not allowed but we called and it was no problem).

Electric grass pitch

Liked A wonderful campsite located a short distance from Devizes with excellent facilities and friendly staff. The site caters for tents as well as caravans and motorhomes. It is a very quiet site with only a little noise from the nearby main road. It is easy to find with good signage.

The pitches are large with power and water and are well spaced. The site was full when I visited but didn't feel crowded which was also excellent. I really enjoyed my visit and would come back again. Highly recommended.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely rural location in a peaceful setting just a few minutes walk to the canal. Nice sized pitches, with water and electric, clean facilities, nice hot shower. No complaints. I also liked that I received a site map and pitch number before my arrival.

Disliked Signage to check in wasn't great, if check in is even needed knowing your pitch number but I ended up checking in with the canal holiday people by mistake but they were friendly and happy to help.

Local attractions

Wander the canal first of all, for a short stroll along its locks or for the peacefully scenic three-mile walk into the market town of Devizes, home of 29 canal locks and hundreds of historic sites including over 500 listed buildings and an 11th-century Norman castle. History is all around here, such as at the famed and ancient stones of Avebury, 10 miles away, Chippenham and Trowbridge, both within 15 miles, and Lacock Abbey & Cloisters six miles away, used as a location in some of the Harry Potter films. The petting zoo, adventure playground, Georgian stately home and Capability Brown-designed gardens Bowood House & Gardens are seven miles away. A 20-mile drive will take you to the Roman baths, shopping and beaut old buildings of UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath along the River Avon; if you're a literary type, take pride in a trip to the city's Jane Austen Centre to see its museum on the writer and have a sup in its Regency tearoom. Bradford-on-Avon, 10 miles away, also has Georgian houses as well as plenty of independent shops and a handsome riverside walk. Stonehenge and Longleat Safari Park are both 20 miles from the farm.
