Plough Lane Caravan Site: View of the pitches

General

  • Peaceful adults-only Wiltshire caravan site near Chippenham
  • Half an hour’s drive to Bath, 10 minutes to Lacock and five to the M4
  • Security barrier and dog-exercise field; pub five minutes’ walk

Neatly manicured grounds and lots of greenery dividing the pitches into bays are just a taster of what's in store at adults-only Plough Lane Caravan Site, near Chippenham in Wiltshire. Thanks to its proximity to the M4 (five minutes’ drive), it’s also thoroughly easy to access (no reversing down narrow lanes for tractors here) as well as being close to the southern Cotswolds and gorgeous historic Bath.

The site is secured with a barrier and all pitches have electric hook-ups, water and waste water disposal points. Carefully maintained facilities include a heated shower block with hot water, spacious cubicles and hair dryers, plus a launderette with an iron and dryer.

Brought the dogs on holiday too? Let them have an off-lead runaround in the designated exercise field. Looking for inspiration for days out? Have a nose through the books in the information area, which also has books and DVDs to keep you entertained on any rainy days.

Although it's on the edge of open countryside, the site still offers lots of local amenities: you can walk to stops on bus routes to Chippenham and the Cotswolds town of Malmesbury within five minutes, and if you like the sound of a pint, there’s a pub within roughly the same distance. Going down the self-catering route? Pick up supplies from the supermarket on the outskirts of Chippenham (five minutes’ drive).

Lovely flat hard standing pitch, good size and not close to next caravan. Good dog exercise field with a path. Nice and quiet site with spotlessly clean toilet and showers. Shower gel, shampoo and body lotion provided in the showers. I loved the body lotion!
All facilities were good and easy access. Met with happy smiley, helpful staff.

good location for many places. Chippenham walk through woods / fields was 6 1/2 miles which was a nice walk with the dogs. The campsite itself was lovely and quiet. Malmesbury nice to walk around as was Castle Combe.

    Disliked:

Constant noise from the A450 which isn't the campsites fault although you do get used to it. Unfortunately I couldn't get wifi from the pitch we were in

A lovely adult only site with good sized fully serviced pitches and mature shrubbery to make it feel more secluded.

On site facilities are very clean, with nice hand soap, moisturiser and cotton wool which is a nice touch.

The dog field is well looked after and a good size.

There is traffic noise and we were aware of it before booking but it really did not bother us.

Bus stop is right outside and there are some lovely local walks.

All in all, we had a lovely 3 nights at Plough Lane.

This site is a lovely little site all that you need for a peaceful break.
I seen some reviews where it was supposed to have been let to go, I can assure you this is not the case the site is well kept and lovely and clean, dog walking field was excellent as my German Shepherd loves to chase after a ball, plenty of room for this and some fellow dog walkers showed great manners in not entering whilst he was off the lead before asking if it was okay.

Local attractions

Fancy a nose around the southern Cotswolds? Lacock (10 minutes’ drive) is a rather lovely place to start, with lots of Georgian cottages and a riverside abbey where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. Heading north is Castle Combe (15 minutes), often called the prettiest village in England), with a medieval market cross and a sprinkling of cosy tea rooms.

Go way back in time to marvel at prehistoric man’s ingenuity with a visit to the stone circles and informative visitor centre at Stonehenge (50 minutes), or get up close to standing stones at Avebury. On the way between these two landmarks, stop off to admire 19th-century engineering skills at Caen Hill Locks (both half an hour) near Devizes, where a series of 29 locks rise up a steep hillside.

Another local must-see Longleat (40 minute), with its popular safari tours to spot lions, tigers and giraffes, but if your interests are more city-based, head straight to Bath (half an hour) for its indie shopping and regal architecture, or nip up the M4 to Designer Outlet Swindon (20 minutes) for some serious bargain hunting.

Must see

  • Lacock Abbey, Grounds and Cloisters (4.9 miles)
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (9.2 miles)
  • Wadworth Visitor Centre (10.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Lacock Abbey, Fox Talbot Museum and Village (4.9 miles)
  • Great Chalfield Manor and Garden (8.8 miles)
