  • Peaceful adults-only Wiltshire caravan site near Chippenham
  • Half an hour’s drive to Bath, 10 minutes to Lacock and five to the M4
  • Security barrier and dog-exercise field; pub five minutes’ walk
Neatly manicured grounds and lots of greenery dividing the pitches into bays are just a taster of what's in store at adults-only Plough Lane Caravan Site, near Chippenham in Wiltshire. Thanks to its proximity to the M4 (five minutes’ drive), it’s also thoroughly easy to access (no reversing down narrow lanes for tractors here) as well as being close to the southern Cotswolds and gorgeous historic Bath. The site is secured with a barrier and all pitches have electric hook-ups, water and waste water disposal points. Carefully maintained facilities include a heated shower block with hot water, spacious cubicles and hair dryers, plus a launderette with an iron and dryer. Brought the dogs on holiday too? Let them have an off-lead runaround in the designated exercise field. Looking for inspiration for days out? Have a nose through the books in the information area, which also has books and DVDs to keep you entertained on any rainy days. Although it's on the edge of open countryside, the site still offers lots of local amenities: you can walk to stops on bus routes to Chippenham and the Cotswolds town of Malmesbury within five minutes, and if you like the sound of a pint, there are a couple of pubs within a five-minute drive or a 25-minute walk of the site. Going down the self-catering route? Pick up supplies from the supermarket on the outskirts of Chippenham (five minutes’ drive).

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly welcome, good size pitches, facilities clean and spacious. Easy access to Plough Lane and into the campsite.

Disliked Hook up points too far away from some pitches. Advice that a long lead may be needed would be helpful.
Grass well kept but gravel pitches would look so much better if weeded and a bit of colour around would make a huge difference.
Sadly road noise mentioned by many others does impact, but that's not something the campsite can improve.

Liked Adults only, quiet site. Really nice to have fresh water tap and grey waste on the pitch. Facilities were good, plenty of hot water and free shampoo and shower gel in the showers is a nice touch.

Disliked WiFi signal not great.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The very large pitches. Friendly staff. Buses into Chippenhan easily accessed, one of the stops being a 3 minute walk from the site. Adult only made our stay nice and peaceful.
Washing up facilities adequate with very hot water. Did not use the shower facilities so cannot comment, however they appeared clean and well maintained. Site has a barrier with key code for added security. 2 pubs within a 25 minute walk.

Disliked Some road noise present but this did not bother us.

Local attractions

Fancy a nose around the southern Cotswolds? Lacock (10 minutes’ drive) is a rather lovely place to start, with lots of Georgian cottages and a riverside abbey where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. Heading north is Castle Combe (15 minutes), often called the prettiest village in England), with a medieval market cross and a sprinkling of cosy tea rooms. Go way back in time to marvel at prehistoric man’s ingenuity with a visit to the stone circles and informative visitor centre at Stonehenge (50 minutes), or get up close to standing stones at Avebury. On the way between these two landmarks, stop off to admire 19th-century engineering skills at Caen Hill Locks (both half an hour) near Devizes, where a series of 29 locks rise up a steep hillside. Another local must-see Longleat (40 minute), with its popular safari tours to spot lions, tigers and giraffes, but if your interests are more city-based, head straight to Bath (half an hour) for its indie shopping and regal architecture, or nip up the M4 to Designer Outlet Swindon (20 minutes) for some serious bargain hunting.
