  • Pop-up site with views across Exmoor and the Bristol Channel
  • A five-minute drive from Timberscombe and 10 from Dunster
  • Woodland and countryside walking trails leading straight from the park
Settle down in Somerset at Allercott Farm for a trip to a family-friendly pop-up site. With seven acres of green fields to explore, this is just the kind of spot that’s excellent for embracing the experience of all-natural stays. As if that wasn’t already enough, there’s also the fact that Timberscombe, a riverside village in Exmoor National Park, is a five-minute drive away. Light a campfire and let the smaller travellers run free while you gaze over the cairn-topped summit of Dunkery Beacon and the Bristol Channel beyond. Make a note to bring binoculars – on a clear day, Wales’ Brecon Beacons can be seen on the horizon. A fence and hedge encircle the site, meaning that you won’t be worried about the kids straying too far. If the views inspire you to get out and stroll, set off towards the southern edge of the farm, which has a marked woodland trail and access to a public footpath. There's also the Coleridge Way, about a mile up the road towards Wheddon Cross. The facilities here include a portable toilet, a cold tap and waste disposal bins, plus a hot shower. Well-behaved dogs with considerate owners are welcome; logs are available for purchase for those who plan on getting a fire on the go come nightfall. Those staying on Saturday nights can also treat themselves to a freshly baked wood-fired pizza on site.

Local attractions

Dash into Dunster (10 minutes' drive) to stroll around its independent shops, or sip ales in one of its cosy traditional pubs. The place is also stuffed with history: the age-old Dunster Yarn Market and National Trust-run Dunster Castle are both well worth a visit, as is the 16th-century dovecote that’s tucked away behind the main street. After perusing the above, you could set out from Dunster and walk to Dunster Beach in roughly 40 minutes, or drive down the coast to Minehead (20 minutes) for fish and chips by the sea, classic arcade amusements or steam train trips on the West Somerset Heritage Railway. Outdoorsy types have lots of options too, including hiking to the top of Dunkery Beacon (15 minutes), taking in the scenery along the four-mile Porlock Woodland Walk (30 minutes), crossing the river Barle at Tarr Steps (25 minutes) or fishing for trout at Wimbleball Lake (20 minutes). The seaside villages of Lynton and Lynmouth (45 minutes) are also worth the journey, both as destinations in their own right and as starting points for a hike up to the gorgeous Valley of Rocks (50 minutes).

Allerbell bell tent

Liked: We stayed in the bell tent with 4 of us and a dog. The plot is self contained with shower, toilet and washing up area which was great for my hubby and eldest child who aren't campers! On a clear night the low light pollution enabled us to see the milky way, shooting stars and Andromeda! The field next to us wasn't being used and the other field only had one or two campers so we felt like we were on our own! I've not heard such peace and quiet before!! The dog loved it. I've not seen her so relaxed away from home before! With a teenager and a tweenager the lack of signal or electricity to charge was a huffing matter but they coped, with the help of our battery pack which is essential if you need to check weather or things to do. Best to do that before you arrive! With the recent heatwave we were unprepared for the cold of the position. The wind whips up from the valley up the hill to the site so take jumpers and jeans for the evenings and mornings!! We didn't get much sleep as the tent rubs on the beds as it flaps. The beds are up against the side of the tent with no room to move but is better if you position pillows at the corners to stop the squeeking noise. The tent flaps around generally, but nothing you can do about that! We started to get used to it after a few nights! If you have tall people the single camp beds are small both in length and width so better for small children or non wrigglers and the mattress is very thin so I'd advise you to take extra duvets for padding. We think the site is great and the owner is lovely. The location is within easy reach of the beach and Exmoor. What more could you ask for?! I'd taken some walks to do as we'd been to the area before. Careful on the lanes as very narrow and locals come tearing down them, some without slowing down!!

Meadow non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch (wild)

Liked: We liked everything, the wilderness of this camping is amazing, the field itself, the grass, the view across the hills, woods and sea. The toilets and showers are new and clean, we loved it. There are water taps at each camping pitch. the pitches are divided by un-cutted grass. The scenery is absolutely stunning. The owners make an amazing stone baked pizza and delivered hot to your tent with a really good price (8£ per pizza). They can supply you with wood logs and steel fire pit. Overall an amazing magical camping site, quiet and with basic comfort in order to experience a true wild camping.
