Mendip Ski Camp: Tent pitch

General

  • Well-maintained and peaceful campsite next to Mendip Activity Centre
  • A mile from Sandford village centre; Cheddar Gorge 15 minutes' drive
  • Family-friendly site in an area of outstanding natural beauty

Whether you're looking for snowsports in Somerset or just somewhere green and quiet to stay, pitch by the pistes at Mendip Ski Camp, a peaceful rural spot next to Mendip Activity Centre in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This spacious and friendly site welcomes families, small groups and well-behaved dogs for laidback holidays on its green and grassy field. The site is easily accessible but secluded, with a wide range of adventurous activities and local amenities within a short walk. Facilities here include a cabin with hot showers and toilets; campfires and barbecues are permitted too.

As well as the dry ski slope next door, the on-site activity centre organises watersports, archery, frisbee golf and abseiling (book in advance via the centre's website), while a mile away in Sandford village centre you have access to a pub, a kids' playground, footpaths and Thatchers Cider Farm.

This is a scenic location with nearby woodlands and plenty of wildlife to spot, including deer, foxes and buzzards. Nearby walks of note include the Strawberry Line, the Mendip Way and strolls around Cheddar Gorge, while for coastal capers Weston-super-Mare and the Somerset coast are half an hour away by road.

It cost £30 to stay in an empty field with no lights, no running water23/10/2022

There was no hot water, no toilet paper, no lights.

We contacted the owner and there was no reply. When we arrived there was no running water. We managed to get the water running and even managed to get some hot water. There were no working lights when we returned from dinner around 9pm. In the morning we went to have showers and there was no hot (or even like warm) water.
Contacted the owner on the mobile number they have listed and got no reply.
It was £30 to be in a field. Absolutely disappointed. If they were going to turn off their facilities in October they should at least charge less! Very disappointed
Unable to contact the owner for a refund.

V basic for the price - no recycling or bins at all (not even a small one in the loo for sanitary products!) no hot water, no toilet paper, no hand dryer or paper towels in loo. Only 2 toilets and two showers for whole site. Poster advertising fire pit hire and wood but no one available on site and no number to call in order to get it.

Location, great for walks and lots to do locally

    Disliked:

Facilities, need maintaining more efficiently. There was often no toilet roll in the toilet and one of the showers had an issue draining which meant if was very dirty. I had to clean it before I could use it.

The ski centre next door had music at night which was very loud, fortunately this was not every night of our stay.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.

The toilets and showers are only a year old and are modern and clean.

You did chose to stay during the August bank holiday so the campsite was very busy and the toilets and showers were in constant use. The facilities are cleaned throughout the day and it is up to the guests to be respectful and leave the toilets and showers clean as much as they can as we can't have a cleaner on duty to clean after every individual use - we are a campsite on a field so grass goes down the plughole from time to time.

The ski centre did have musical entertainment on for one night - as it was a bank holiday.
The music was in the evening only and finished before 9.30pm - a large number of our guests went to the venue to enjoy the entertainment whilst others sat around their BBQs and fires enjoying the music - it created a lovely atmosphere. Sorry to hear that this wasn't for you.

Only two toilets, labeled man and woman for a large camping site. A lot of big holes in the field, so tent had a uneven floor.

We arrived with a new tent which had the wrong poles. We thought we were going to have to drive home but the owner went out of his way and managed to find somewhere for us to sleep. What a kind and helpful person, I would definitely recommend camping at his site.

2 open fields to pick from, welcoming and quiet in the evening. Got exactly what was advertised with clean shower/toilet. Was a good option to visit the ski centre next door for food and drinks (walkable distance). We stopped here twice as a stop on the way to/from Cornwall and was exactly what we were looking for. A great basic site.

Spacious site, relaxed atmosphere very dog friendly.

    Disliked:

Ran out of toilet paper in toilet block, only two toilets for whole site but they are clean and pleasant, showers same but again a great place to wash and get changed. I think most people would happily pay a bit more to stay here given its presentation and facilities if they had the added benefit of somewhere to put their rubbish, I personally do not understand this decision given the large car park area on arrival could accommodate a trade waste bin, cover the cost by a small lift in stay per night. Very limited pitches which are level so if you’re in a van bring ramps.

Local attractions

For après-ski with a West Country twist, head five minutes' drive down the road to Thatchers Cider Farm for orchard tours, trips to the on-site farm shop and the chance to try a good few ciders while you're at it. For an accompaniment to your drinks, head into Cheddar (15 minutes' drive), home of the selfsame cheese, where there are two delis plus a range of family-friendly pubs, restaurants and cafés.

If that combination of fine food and drink leaves you feeling a bit lethargic, dust yourself off and take to the walks around Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes) for fresh air and sweeping views over the Mendip Hills, or drive a bit further afield to take on Glastonbury Tor (40 minutes) and look down to the pretty market town below.

More historic buildings like those in Glastonbury are on display in Wells (30 minutes), a pint-sized city with a gorgeous cathedral deep in the Somerset countryside. There's also Bristol (40 minutes) and Bath (an hour) to visit if you fancy more urban explores, while for more countrified days out there's the top-rated Somerset Rural Life Museum (35 minutes).
