The Moonshine House shepherd's hut

Liked: Aaron was helpful and kind, but also left us to our own devices. I managed to lock my keys in the car, and he offered me his van to travel home and get a spare, what a gent! The facilities are basic, but that is to be expected in a shack called the Moonshine Lodge, but be prepared to have to improvise a bit. The lodge itself is cosy and clean, and the bed is comfy. Sitting on the porch @ 6am watching a thunderstorm is great! We enjoyed our short stay on the whole, with just some minor niggles, but we could easily prepare for those if we went back.

Disliked: We had quite a damp stay, and the pathways leading up to lodge are quite muddy and slippery, so be prepared for that and bring wellies. High summer, probably not a problem. Other than a microwave, there are no cooking facilities in the lodge, although there is a wood BBQ and fire pit outside, but if its raining these are not going to work. Bring a small gas stove with you if the weather looks iffy, and also a set of knives. The lodge is situated quite close to a fairly busy road, so if you are looking for absolute peace and quiet then you may be disappointed.

The Moonshine House shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything! So well equipped, everything you could possibly need including towels and bedding of a very high quality. Very comfortable bed too. Plus a surprise welcome pack of a few basics to get you by if you’ve not yet done any shopping. Aaron is a great host, very friendly, but once he’s shown you around, will leave you to enjoy your ‘get away from it all break’ (but is on hand if you do need anything). ….and as for his gorgeous dog Duke, well that was the icing on the cake! Will definitely stay again. Woodland with wild flowers, birdsong, wildlife and open fire…what else could you wish for?!

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

As well as walks in the area around the site, you might like to head north to climb Glastonbury Tor (35 minutes' drive), or go south to check out the Cerne Abbas Giant (half an hour). The Jurassic Coast is full of great places for a wander, too – some favourites include West Bay (half an hour), Lyme Regis (40 minutes) and Chesil Beach (50 minutes). For different rural days out, grab yourselves a woolly pal for a walk with Cary Alpacas (20 minutes), explore Montacute House (10 minutes) and Tintinhull Garden (15 minutes) or take a tour of the grand interior of Forde Abbey (25 minutes), followed by a wander through the topiary-filled grounds. Those with something of an interest in all things that move with no doubt want to schedule in visits to Fleet Air Arm Museum (20 minutes) and Haynes Motor Museum (25 minutes). As this is a grownup break, you might like to put a tour of Palmers Brewery (35 minutes) on the list too…
