Buckland Farm Camping: Wild flowers in the camping meadow

General

  • Peaceful and scenic farm site with views of the Blackdown Hills
  • Exeter, Exmoor National Park and Lyme Regis within a 40-minute drive
  • Fenced pitches with access to off-lead dog park and lounge/picnic area

Restful breaks in rural Somerset and views of the Blackdown Hills… Sounds rather pleasant, doesn't it? That magic mix of peace and quiet and far-reaching country views is exactly what's on offer at Buckland Farm Camping, a spacious site near the small village of West Buckland.

Buckland Farm Campsite is surrounded by pretty trees, hedges and a little stream – a landscape that lends itself to relaxed walks and cycle rides (many of which are directly accessible from the farm). The facilities here are also geared towards outdoor living, with highlights including a picnic area, a playground and an off-lead dog park where four-legged friends can run free (please keep dogs on leads in all other parts of the campsite). And handily, for those rainy days, a covered communal area is available, with seating, books, local guides and games, along with picnic tables outside for when it brightens up.

Other additions like a small shower block, a charging station for mobile phones, composting toilets, freezers, taps for drinking water and a washing-up station will all doubtless come in handy. You can either park in a drive-on area or in a field adjacent to the car-free area (where carting your kit to the pitches is made easier by wheelbarrows).

For dog owners, there are even a couple of fenced pitches, please contact the site owner if you would like to request one of these pitches as they are first come, first served and incur a £4 a night charge.

Off site, a number of excellent country pubs can be reached within a 10-minute drive; Taunton town centre is a quarter of an hour away.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Big open spaces, tons of space between pitches, tall grass separating pitches, beautiful views, the kids loved the shared bell tent and spent lots of time playing in it, the composting toilets were the nicest and cleanest I've ever used, the owners were really friendly, it was so easy to get to from the M5

    Green space, rural.

Only 1 shower and 1 tap for washing up when we visited in May. Infrastructure primitive and would get v muddy at water points with heavy use. Take wellies!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, and for your comments by email. It is useful to know the experiences and concerns of guests, especially as a new site.
I would like to reassure you that we have a membrane and appropriate flooring in place around all of our structures, including the sinks/showers, as well as more than adequate soakaways.
Yes, we had just one shower for our first few guests - with just a few people on site to start with, we did have a problem with the shower hoses supplied due to our water pressure being high. This teething problem has now been sorted, and we now have three showers in use.
We are also sorry that you found our infrastructure primitive - composting loos can feel like that bit like that if you aren't used to them but it is what we advertise and they really are the best option for the environment. Thank you for our 10/10 for cleanliness, we do try hard in that department.
Thank you for recommending our site to your friends, which is encouraging, and that you would stay again yourselves.
All the best.

Quiet lovely area to camp, clean communal area with showers and sinks ( hot water!), another area which was accessible to all had a charging point, spark plugs, books for children and its also a shelter for rain. There was also eggs here which you can buy which is a nice idea! The host was lovely, she helped us before we arrived as I couldn’t find the site and she knew my name which I thought was so well prepared and lovely. She showed us around and made sure we knew everything. Would definitely go back!

    Disliked:

Didn’t dislike anything, apart from the rain! Haha.

I had a lovely relaxing break - it was a treat to be given marshmallows to toast as part of my warm welcome.
The facilities were clean, the pitches were large, with plenty of room so as not to feel on top of other campers. The views of the hills were stunning. I settled into my tent and watched the sun go down with a beautiful sunset.
I look forward to my next stay.

Local attractions

The Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts just over the road from the farm and is full of places to explore, whether you feel like doing that on foot, by bike or on horseback. Nearby starting points for adventures include the Wellington Monument (10 minutes' drive), the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, or nature reserves like Quants Wood (five minutes).

Exploring the surrounding county of Somerset is also a breeze, whether you're heading to the county town of Taunton (15 minutes) to see the castle, museum and shops or fancy jaunts to the nearby Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). Day trips to the coast and the stunning Exmoor National Park can also both be sorted in 40 minutes by road or less.

It's unlikely you'll spend your whole time in Somerset, though, as Devon's also on your doorstep. Exeter city centre is half an hour away, while beach time and fossil hunting in Lyme Regis (40 minutes) or trips on Seaton Tramway (40 minutes) are also equally accessible.
