Henstridge Golf and Leisure: Scenic location with fishing lake next to pitches

General

  • Well-maintained countryside site in the scenic Blackmore Vale
  • A 15-minute drive from Shaftesbury and 20 from Sherborne
  • Fishing lake, nine-hole golf course and clubhouse with bar/restaurant

Up for coarse fishing, fossil hunting, sea kayaking and a quick round of golf? Head over to Henstridge Golf and Leisure for quiet stays in the Somerset countryside surrounded by much fab stuff to do.

This peaceful and well-maintained site is in the stunning Blackmore Vale, a five-minute drive from the village of Henstridge and 15 minutes from the town of Shaftesbury. You might not get that far though, when the 70-acre park boasts its own well-stocked coarse fishing lake, along with a nine-hole golf course and a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant…

And how might your days here pan out? Perhaps a full English and a fortifying coffee or two before you amble over to the lake for a morning of landing carp, roach and tench… then maybe a bite of lunch before perfecting your swing on the driving range and the putting green, followed by a leisurely nine holes…? If all that sporting action in the outdoors has tired you out, put up your feet in the bar and watch someone else running about on the bigscreen TV.

If you do want to stretch your legs, it’s a 20-minute drive to Sherborne for tours of the ancient abbey and the museum, wanders round the castles old and new and maybe a spot of kayaking or fishing on the lake.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Electricity is metered on site at £5 per 33.33 kWh and must be paid on site using a pre-paid topup card. There is a £10 deposit required for the card, which will be refunded on departure when returning the card.

Wifi is only available in the clubhouse and outside seating area.

What a little gem of a campsite. From the moment of arrival the couple managing the site took care of my every need - nothing was too much trouble. Amazing camping pitches, lots of space and level ground. I treated myself to having electricity at the tent which was a nice change - arranged with ease (with thanks from the owner who lent me a cable).

The main reason I was there was to fish and I wasn’t disappointed and caught many fish over the 3 days and of different types. My first large Mirror Carp! I also tried out the golf as well, a simple parkland course but clearly well maintained and busy!

Waking up each morning was a treat, looking over the golf course, watching deer run around. The site facilities are of good standard and clean.

All in all a great stay and I’ll be back with the family this time.

The club house looked ok from what we see. And the golf course itself looked nice.. and plenty of people fishing also. Which was nice to see

No anti social behaviour with different groups either. All groups kept them selves respectful and to themselves. Plenty of space for the kids to run around and play football and be kids

Overall presentation upon arriving was nice with kept lawns, private drive etc

    Disliked:

    Toilet / showerblock.
It wasn’t really that busy with caravans so it seemed And was nearly always out of toilet roll.. showers are not the biggest and not really that clean by looking at all the silicone.. but they worked.
Us in particular (non electric) ended up right out the back near the fishing lake field which is nothing special even though there was loads of nicer non electric pitches also that didn’t get occupied on out stay

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We wish you had told us about the toilet and shower block as we will always restock them. The silicone is due for replacing over the winter months. Also if you had asked we may have been able to move you to a different pitch. I do not understand what you mean by "stuck out the back"

Very unfriendly staff, didn’t explain anything to us really, we never read anywhere that to use the driving range, fishing lakes etc you had to pay extra, which is fine but when your son went for a hit about he gets a very aggressive adult male telling him off…..really not amused! Went home a night early because he upset him so much. Shame that the male in question could not check on the lake all over the weekend because fishing was made pretty much useless what with the constant barking of the dogs and the children chucking there rods in left right and centre from the group in the top corner! Showers and loos were filthy with no loo roll. Oh and club house wasn’t even open on the Monday rubbish weekend

Toilets unclean and not enough toilet paper . Soap watered down. Cold and damp showers hit and miss if they work.
Electric on a card but you can’t tell what you have left ? The numbers on display are not related to cost so tough if you fridge stops working on a day out because your didn’t put more electric on ! It didn’t but the risk is stupid.
Looks like a car park - and many hardstanding are in fact in the car park .

Local attractions

If you’re after ancient monuments, it’s half an hour’s drive from the site to the gigantic Cerne Abbas chalk figure and 50 minutes to Stonehenge.

For sights even older, it's an hour's drive to the fossil-strewn Jurassic Coast, where you can combine kayak trips around the cliffs with amateur archaeology on the beaches at popular spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, or walk sections of the South West Coast Path.

It’s a similar distance to bigger coastal towns like Weymouth, where aquariums and skate parks combine with wildlife walks round the RSPB Reserves of Radipole Lake and Lodmoor, or to Poole, where you can mix harbour cruises and seal-spotting sea safaris with the flumes, rides and slides of Splashdown waterpark.

Heading inland, Bath has been drawing the crowds since Roman times and is well worth the hour-long trip: tour the old Roman baths, take a dip, soak or steam in the spa waters yourself, and top it off by making a bespoke brew at Bath Gin distillery.

For cycling fans, the Bath Two Tunnels Circuit runs under and around the city on a 13-mile loop, while for those more fond of gentle strolls, few sites are prettier than the Prior Park Landscape Garden, designed by Capability Brown.
