Wild Whitty: Pitching area

General

  • Spacious wild-style campsite overlooking Taunton Vale in Somerset
  • Taunton 15 minutes' drive; Lyme Regis three quarters of an hour
  • Family-friendly, with a shallow stream and simple play area

Looking for camping without the big crowds? After a wild-style site where you'll have plenty of room to yourself? Then wend your way towards Wild Whitty, a small and intimate site in the gorgeous Somerset countryside around Curland.

Sitting in Taunton Vale and with lovely rural views, this family-run, family-focused site is based on a 30-acre smallholding. You can pitch up on a number of plots here, surrounded by wildflowers or down by a meandering shallow stream where kids can safely plan (under adult supervision, of course).

After a spot of fossil-hunting around the water, younger guests can build dens (materials are provided) or head to a small basic play area and amuse themselves. There's a lot of wildlife around here, plus a couple of resident sheep and a few chickens – what more could you ask for?

Facilities include a large oak picnic bench which can comfortably seat up to 10. Firepits are provided and wood is sold on site. Freshly-prepared breakfast boxes can be ordered in advance and home-made cakes and ice creams are sold.

In terms of essentials, there is a hot shower and composting loo located in a wagon house, where there's also limited solar-powered USB charging available.

What can I say, our stay was absolutely brilliant from start to finish.
Andrew and Caroline are such lovely hosts, nothing was too much trouble for them. When we arrived Andrew walked us around and showed us everything, when we had chosen our pitch he bought us a fire pit and plenty of wood for our two night stay. The shower and toilet were very clean with quirky door handles, toilet roll holders and hooks made out of horse shoes. The pitches were a good distance apart which gives much privacy. We had exclusive use of the site on our first night and used the fire pit, big Tudor like table and the handmade BBQ, made form farm machinery. Caroline even put candles on the table for us. There is an area for the kids too, with rope swings, a tree house and Zip wire, a safe stream with a wooden bridge across. This site is certainly first class and I highly recommend. Its got to be the best site we have stayed on, a truly relaxing back to nature experience. Love it, hopefully we can return next year. Thank you both for a wonderful stay.

A truly wonderful site that encapsulates the isolation, peace and natural surroundings expected of wild camping but with the added benefits of great amenities for added comfort if desires. Caroline and Andrew were great hosts that were so accommodating and we were all made to feel very comfortable. We loved the wild/ non commercial feel of the site which is dog friendly, child friendly and extremely spacious. The children loved exploring the wooded area and around the stream, which kept them busy for hours. Everything was very clean and felt extremely Covid safe with hand gel provided. We will definitely be visiting again. Thank you Caroline and Andrew for a lovely stay.

The location was stunning, vast space for the kids to explore as well as rope swings and a zip wire dotted around. We were fortunate enough to have the entire setting to ourselves which was lovely, although there’s enough space between pitches to equally have a great stay when it’s busy. Andrew and Caroline were excellent hosts, tending to our needs around the clock! The shower/toilet facility was eco friendly yet extremely clean and welcoming.

Absolutely loved this campsite. So tranquil, beautiful, clean and lots to keep the kids entertained. Fantastic rope swings, zip wires and cool go karts! We had campfires in the evening with marshmallows and walks around the pretty site. Not a screen in sight, we loved it. The owners are very friendly and we can't wait to go back.
