  • Quiet, natural site for over-16s between Exmoor and the Quantock Hills
  • A 20-minute drive from Kilve beach; half an hour from Minehead
  • Dogs welcome; a five-minute walk from a steam train station and café
Looking to get savvy about the south west? Get acquainted with the Quantocks or become an expert on Exmoor at Ladywell Camping Site, which welcomes guests aged 16 and over to a quiet and natural holiday spot a mile outside Stogumber. Consider packing a pencil and notepad on your explores in the surrounding area – noting down the villages, footpaths and bits of local lore you come across during your time here may well stand you in good stead at the site's regular quiz night (specialist subject: Somerset). Don't panic if such brainy activity isn't your bag; owner Dave makes a point of welcoming all comers to this friendly place. As well as catering to eggheads, Ladywell Camping Site is likely to find favour with dog owners (they're free to bring well-behaved pups along), beachgoers (Kilve beach is a mere 20-minute drive) and hillwalkers (Exmoor and the Quantocks? Yes please). Stogumber train station (five minutes' walk), where you can board a West Somerset Railway steam service or stop for a cream tea, also deserves special mention. After a spell of sightseeing and scone-tasting, there are basic but handy amenities like toilets, showers and laundry facilities to sort out practicalities back at base. The set-up here is quite low-key, meaning there's plenty of space where wild plants and animals can pop up and say hello (manicured lawns have a time and place, but Ladywell Camping Site isn't it). Need a supermarket? There's a small one in Williton (10 minutes' drive), along with a couple of bakeries and pubs.

Local attractions

So, you're at Stogumber station ticket office. Where first? The 20-mile West Somerset Railway heritage rail line covers lots of scenic countryside that's an attraction in its own right, but alighting at Watchet (15 minutes' drive), Blue Anchor (25 minutes) or Minehead (30 minutes) is invariably a good shout. All are on the coast and great for kids; Watchet and Minehead are busier seaside towns with classic arcades to explore if the weather turns, while Blue Anchor is a quieter seaside village popular with fishermen. If you'd rather take a driving tour through the hinterland, make a point of seeing local historic buildings like the elegant Crowcombe Court (five minutes), ancient Cleeve Abbey (15 minutes) and Coleridge Cottage (15 minutes), once the abode of the self-same Romantic poet. Forays slightly further afield should be considered too, as they open up terrific towns like Taunton (20 minutes), Glastonbury (40 minutes) and Wells (an hour and ten minutes) – OK, the last one is technically a city because of its cathedral, but you get the idea…
