Hardstanding and grass pitches
Hardstanding and grass pitches

  • Rural Somerset site crossed by a stream a five-minute drive from Frome
  • Longleat 10 minutes’ drive; Wookey Hole Caves 35 minutes
  • Play area with miniature adventure course; dog-friendly walks nearby
A gorgeously rural corner of Somerset is the setting for Seven Acres Camping Site, which stretches over (you guessed it…) seven acres on the edge of the Longleat Estate, a five-minute drive from the town of Frome. A stream runs through the site, which is just off the B3092; this makes it easy to access, but it also means you may hear some traffic noise. A railway line runs parallel to the road, too… but you might find that the jolly whistling of a passing train rather adds to the romance of camping. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Regardless, forget the possible noises and accentuate the positive, starting with oodles of space and a play area with play equipment and a miniature adventure course where the kids can climb, slide and swing to their hearts’ content (while you keep an eye on proceedings from the nearby shaded bench). There are no cars permitted in the camping field, keeping the atmosphere peaceful; after you park up, you'll need to unload and walk to your pitch. This is a self-check-in site, so settle in at your own pace. While you may not see them, the team is on-site daily to make sure everything is running smoothly. Your canine companion is not left behind either, with plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding area. Have a go at the circular Mells Walk (10 minutes’ drive), following the course of the Mells River; or head to Clanger Wood (20 minutes’ drive), known for its bluebell meadows and colourful butterflies. Cranborne Chase National Landscape (35 minutes) has trails leading through its distinctive landscape of chalk river valleys and escarpments; this area is also an International Dark Skies Reserve, so be sure you have all you need to stay until after sundown for some spectacular stargazing.

What customers say

This is a beautiful, well-maintained campsite, praised for its cleanliness and quiet atmosphere. Guests appreciate the spacious pitches, mature trees, and a lovely stream. Facilities are generally good, with easy self-check-in and secure gating. It's considered great value and ideal for families, with a play area and close proximity to Longleat. Some minor issues have been noted, including shower privacy and occasional noise from the road, though improvements are ongoing.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Family friendly campsite with good amenities, wheelbarrows available for shifting camping gear, locked gated entrance, large campsite, river and woods for kids and small climbing frame for kids. Most people kept to the quiet curfew.

Disliked Have to Park far away from pitch, didn't see any staff, had ants nest under tent. No local amenities or food/drink on site and have to drive for anything. Public Washing up was often crowded with people so had to choose carefully.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The toilets and showers were clean and tidy. There were trolleys at the entrance of the grass field making it easier to transport the camping gear. Fire pits were there to use, making the evenings a bit warmer. The kids loved the play equipment & playing poo sticks in the river.

Disliked Toilet blocks were clean but the showers were small and not very private

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Nice pitches with trees, clean toilets. Road and train noise not too intrusive.

Disliked Layout of toilet block offered no privacy. Shortage of shelves and hooks.
No staff on site apart from gardener briefly. Left a telephone enquiry but there was no response. Tent field across the stream looked attractive although by last week was empty. Presumably the very long list of do's and don't was aimed at summer holiday campers but was not particularly welcoming nor were the locked rubbish bins with a notice saying if bins are full to take your rubbish home.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Quiet site, very clean facilities, fridge provided, beautiful trees. The gate system worked well and I felt very secure there.

Disliked I would have liked a food waste composting bin to be provided. For the price of the camping id also expect a bit more like a clothes washing machine and a water tap in the camping field.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked We liked the layout of the site. It was quite small but very nice and very clean. Also, it was quiet. We liked the really cute gate which you had to open with a code to get on site. Also we liked the closeness of the site to Longleat which was the purpose of our visit.

Disliked Didn’t dislike anything really. I didn’t see an on-site office but I didn’t need one plus there is a phone number if you have any problems. I did drive straight past when we first arrived but turned around and all was fine. We also struggled with Wi-Fi but not a problem for a two-day stay.

Local attractions

Budding zoologists might enjoy a day at Longleat (10 minutes’ drive), where you can drive through vast enclosures housing big cats, wolves and rhinos; get hopelessly lost in Britain’s largest hedge maze; and take a tour of the 16th-century stately home, with its splendid artworks and tapestries. Wookey Hole Caves (35 minutes), on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, features a subterranean network of limestone caverns and passages with evocative names like Witch’s Kitchen. After having a go at the caving experience, check out the lifesize creatures at Dinosaur Valley or unwind on the miniature golf course. Treat yourself to a visit to Bath (35 minutes). The Roman bath complex in the centre of town includes a sacred spring and a museum displaying ancient artefacts. Follow that with afternoon tea at the Regency Tea Room at the Jane Austen Centre, where you can pretend to be Emma or Mr Darcy.
