Bridge over the River Frome into the camping field
Hardstanding and grass pitches
Hardstanding and grass pitches

  • Rural Somerset site crossed by a stream a five-minute drive from Frome
  • Longleat 10 minutes’ drive; Wookey Hole Caves 35 minutes
  • Play area with miniature adventure course; dog-friendly walks nearby
A gorgeously rural corner of Somerset is the setting for Seven Acres Camping Site, which stretches over (you guessed it…) seven acres on the edge of the Longleat Estate, a five-minute drive from the town of Frome. A stream runs through the site, which is just off the B3092; this makes it easy to access, but it also means you may hear some traffic noise. A railway line runs parallel to the road, too… but you might find that the jolly whistling of a passing train rather adds to the romance of camping. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it? Regardless, forget the possible noises and accentuate the positive, starting with oodles of space and a play area with play equipment and a miniature adventure course where the kids can climb, slide and swing to their hearts’ content (while you keep an eye on proceedings from the nearby shaded bench). This is a self-check-in site, so settle in at your own pace. While you may not see them, the team is on-site daily to make sure everything is running smoothly. Your canine companion is not left behind either, with plenty of dog-friendly walks in the surrounding area. Have a go at the circular Mells Walk (10 minutes’ drive), following the course of the Mells River; or head to Clanger Wood (20 minutes’ drive), known for its bluebell meadows and colourful butterflies. Cranborne Chase National Landscape (35 minutes) has trails leading through its distinctive landscape of chalk river valleys and escarpments; this area is also an International Dark Skies Reserve, so be sure you have all you need to stay until after sundown for some spectacular stargazing.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, clean campsite set in beautiful woodland with a stream. Visitors appreciate the spacious pitches, mature trees offering shade, and a great children's play area. Facilities are generally clean, with helpful staff. Some guests noted road and train noise, and occasional issues with toilet and shower privacy/availability, especially during busy periods. The secure gated access is a plus.

Paul B. 1 review

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Pretty field with plenty of room. Lots of wildlife with a deer in the field near the tent.

Disliked We had to use carts to transport our camping gear in trolleys to the camping field. It was very confusing checking in and finding the pitch.
The toilets and shower facilities were very poor. Cleaning was poor and the shower facilities were not fit for purpose, with a complete lack of privacy for changing. The light did not work despite this having been identified in previous reviews.
This has been noted in other reviews.
Entry to the site required a code that activated a comically slow gate that looks as though it would give up the ghost any minute.
Communal bins were smelly and overflowing.
Road and rail noise
Other campers were using fire pits despite the recent ban.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Self entry, code shared by email, turn up, pop it in and you’re away. Really easy.
Lovely natural site, not like some hard standings where you feel like you’re at a caravan park, tonnes of tree coverage, stream, nature, plenty of room between pitches.
Toilet block simple but clean and suitable.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Peaceful woodland setting.

Disliked Toilet and showers, Very tired.
Ladies only 2 loos and 3 showers. Two of the showers are just cubicles opening into the toilet block with nowhere to undress and hang clothes. No hand drying facilities, just a small shared hand towel. There was an additional family bathroom but no functioning light, struggled to see how to operate the electric shower in low light.
You can’t park your car next to your caravan/tent. Not sure the reasoning behind this since campers can come and go freely.
Guests staying on the site didn’t respect other guests privacy, walking across pitches …sometimes brushing under the caravan window. Would be nice to see a few notices to remind guests of others privacy. The site is currently up for sale, and as great potential for anyone with the cash !!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The small, compact size of the site. Great location for visiting Longleat. Loved the stream. Beautiful woodland location, with mature trees nearby.

Disliked The lack of changing areas at the showers, taps not easy to turn off.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked ease of check in, choose own pitch, location close to Frome centre

Disliked Ran out of toilet paper, shower areas floor a bit grubby. Supposedly no cars in camping field but returned after day out to find about 20 cars in field.

Remains of old bonfire including lots of broken glass at top of field.

Place was for sale and seemed neglected

Local attractions

Budding zoologists might enjoy a day at Longleat (10 minutes’ drive), where you can drive through vast enclosures housing big cats, wolves and rhinos; get hopelessly lost in Britain’s largest hedge maze; and take a tour of the 16th-century stately home, with its splendid artworks and tapestries. Wookey Hole Caves (35 minutes), on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, features a subterranean network of limestone caverns and passages with evocative names like Witch’s Kitchen. After having a go at the caving experience, check out the lifesize creatures at Dinosaur Valley or unwind on the miniature golf course. Treat yourself to a visit to Bath (35 minutes). The Roman bath complex in the centre of town includes a sacred spring and a museum displaying ancient artefacts. Follow that with afternoon tea at the Regency Tea Room at the Jane Austen Centre, where you can pretend to be Emma or Mr Darcy.
