  • Relaxed hilltop site in the grounds of a village pub
  • A 10-minute drive from Frome; half an hour from Bath city centre
  • High-spec, fully-furnished accommodation overlooking the Mells Valley
Cider, historic cities and a landscape of gorgeous green hills are just three reasons you might pick Somerset for your next break. See any overlap between the points above and your own holiday priorities? Then you'd do well to take a closer look at Glamping on the Hill, a family-friendly site in the Mells Valley. As well as the cracking vistas you can take in from this hilltop vantage point, the site has a pub, The Vobster Inn, which serves up both cooling drinks and slap-up meals. For days out, Bath's Georgian circuses and terraces are an easy half-hour drive away; the smaller but equally visit-worthy cathedral city of Wells is about the same distance. The smart accommodation here is set in spacious, natural-style grounds that young and old are sure to enjoy rambling through; every unit also comes with a firepit for when there's call for open-air stargazing and storytelling sessions. If you didn't get a chance to take Bath's thermal waters (or just fancy something more laidback), a hot tub is also available for those looking to sink into soothing bubbles. Set in the hamlet of Lower Vobster, Glamping on the Hill is bordered by a pretty local river. For waterside wanders, walk or drive the mile and a half into Mells and join the Mells River Walk, a traffic-free trail that passes sluices, kilns, aqueducts and waterfalls. For food shopping or a trip to the cinema, meanwhile, Frome (10 minutes' drive) will be your go-to destination.

Local attractions

It's not the Serengeti, but it's the next best thing… 'It', of course, being Longleat Safari Park (25 minutes' drive), a family favourite whose notoriously cheeky monkeys, graceful big cats and cuddlier critters like armadillos and meerkats will likely be a holiday highlight for all animal fans. Afterwards, you'll also get the chance to admire Longleat House, an Elizabethan edifice with a large collection of artworks. Bath (30 minutes) has similarly genteel vibes, with a pretty weir, canal trips, well-kept parks and landmark Georgian buildings to tick off. The city is also home to Sally Lunn's far-famed buns (or teacakes, if you want to get into that debate…), plus the Roman Baths, an abbey, a golf course and several museums. Into Jane Austen, astronomy, East Asian art or the postal system? You'll have plenty to play with here. Half an hour away to the west are the cathedral city of Wells and Wookey Hole, a limestone cave and underground river system near the scenic slopes of Cheddar Gorge (35 minutes).
