General

  • Beautiful pitches in the woodland on in an open field
  • Small veg and sheep farm ideal for wildlife lovers
  • Campfires allowed

Vallis Veg is not a conventional site with lots of tents squeezed together in a flat field. The site is a small farm and camping here is a little bit wilder. The secluded pitches, set among young trees have been levelled and a separate field has been dedicated to groups.

Facilities are basic but include a sink area for washing-up (cold running water), water tap and a compost toilet. Please note that this site has no shower facilities. The site has a covered 'A' frame structure with a firepit that campers are welcome to use so long it hasn't been booked by a private group.

Some pitches have views across the countryside towards the Mendips and some others are surrounded by trees. The rough ground and vegetation onsite attract a range of wildlife, including buzzards, butterflies and moths. Badgers, deer and lovely birds have also been spotted in the area.

Cosy site, and level pitches, but wild enough and secluded. 27/10/2016

  • Liked:

Despite the Autumnal weather, it was cosy. There was enough dead wood lying around as well to make your own campfire in the sheltered site provided.

The washing up stand was large enough, although as you'd expect there was only cold water.

The walks around were relaxing and beautiful. All in all, a lovely, secluded area with peaceful views and privacy.

    Disliked:

Not a lot of thick logs if you want to make a larger fire that you can leave to burn for most of the evening.

Directions

Important: the site is Vallis Veg, not Vallis Farm. Please do not go to Vallis Farm! Their owners do not like to be disturbed.

If you are going north up Elm lane (from Frome) take the right turn over the old cattle grid (past the small Vallis Farm sign). Pass a small parking area on the right and go up a short, steep hill. The entrance to our land is at the top of the hill on the right hand side before the cottages. Look out for our Vallis Veg sign hanging in the tree.

Local attractions

The town of Frome is a short walk away along an excellent public footpath. Frome has many events throughout the year as well as a number of pubs, restaurants, bars, a cinema, two theatres, art galleries.

If you want something a little more rural there's a number of excellent walks in the area. The East Mendip Way passes through the site; walking away from Frome you can visit the castle at Nunney or follow the river to the village of Mells where you can enjoy a bite to eat in the walled garden, the village cafe or the local gastropub. Also, walk along the MacMillan Way to Nunney and visit the castle.

Activities in the area include the cycling route from Great Elm to Radstock, several local riding stables, a sports centre, tennis in the park or even diving in a flooded quarry.
