  • Secluded semi-wild pitches at a Somerset veg and sheep farm
  • Two miles from the centre of Frome; half an hour's drive to Bath
  • Basic shared facilities provided, plus a firepit for each pitch
‘Getting back to nature' is often cited as a reason to go camping – and if that's the experience you're after, you'll be in a fabulous spot at Camping in Nature at Vallis Veg. The clue really is in the name here – this Somerset site is part of a small veg and sheep farm a couple of miles from Frome, and the camping pitches have been set up to help guests really immerse themselves in peaceful nature. This isn't a place that’s gone for the single camping field approach – instead the pitches have been scattered around the property, giving each one a sense of seclusion and privacy. Some are tucked away among the trees for a cosy experience, while others have more open views of the nearby Mendip Hills. ‘Semi-wild' is the best way to describe these pitches – they’re designed for peaceful nature-filled stays, but they do also have some simple facilities to make your break a little more comfortable. Basic facilities at the washblock include compost toilets, cubicles for a bucket-and-scoop shower and washing-up sinks with cold running water. Each pitch has a firepit area as well as a dedicated tent space that’s been chosen or cleared to allow for fairly easy pitching. Given its nature-centric style, this is a site where you’re likely to spot a fair amount of wildlife – butterflies, moths and birds of all sizes can all be spotted around the place, with occasional appearances from deer and badgers nearby too. The owners are keen to encourage climate-friendly methods of transport, so make sure to select the discount if you’re not bringing a car.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (shaded, three person)

Liked Everything, the enclosed dedicated pitches, the shadiness of trees, beautiful surroundings, quietness and wonderfully basic facilities.

Disliked Nothing whatsoever - excellent site, a real hidden gem.

Would definitely come back and try and get a different pitch with sun!

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (two person, woodland)

Liked Beautiful wildlife and friendly atmosphere. Easy and pretty walk to frome. Will definitely come back!

Disliked Our pitch was in the woods so completely in the shade. In fairness, this was acknowledged in the booking form but was the last pitch available so just something to bear in mind. Also would be nice to have some kind of cleaning spray available for the bathrooms

Beautiful and cared for site perfect to get away. V peaceful

Route directions

Important: the site is Vallis Veg, not Vallis Farm. Please do not go to Vallis Farm! The owners do not like to be disturbed. If you are going north up Elm lane (from Frome) take the right turn over the old cattle grid (past the small Vallis Farm sign). Pass a small parking area on the right and go up a short, steep hill. The entrance to the property is at the top of the hill on the right-hand side before the cottages. Look out for the Vallis Veg sign hanging in the tree.

Local attractions

Frome (20 minutes’ cycle/half an hour's walk) is a lovely town with some great places to eat and drink, plus a thriving arts scene centred around its two theatres, cinema and several art galleries and event venues. The Frome Independent Market, held on the first Sunday of the month, is a real highlight too. The area also really lends itself well to outdoor activities – you can walk part of the Macmillan Way to Nunney Castle or follow the riverside path to Mells for a bite to eat in the walled garden or village café or pub (both places otherwise five minutes' drive/half an hour by bike). The East Mendip Way passes through the farm for more walks, and it’s not far to the cycle trail from Great Elm to Radstock. Exploring further afield might take you to the cities of Bath and Wells (both half an hour's drive), to the fabulous Stourhead estate (20 minutes) or for a heritage ride on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes).
