What customers say
This is a tranquil, back-to-basics campsite with splendid views and a friendly, helpful owner. Facilities are generally clean and well-maintained, including showers and toilets, with a social area available. Campfires are permitted and fire pits are provided. While some guests noted the rugged access track and a preference for car-free pitches, the secluded, natural setting and proximity to local pubs and walks are highly praised. Manager replies indicate that the "almost wild camping" nature of the site, including un-mowed areas and portaloos, is advertised and the track is mentioned.

Non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked From the first day spent here, I knew that I will be returning to this campsite in the future. The host, Tim, is so friendly, accomodating, and eager to share about the wildlife and history of the surrounding area! He also made sure every visitor had what they needed and were settled, quick to hunt down any small tool that may be needed. The facilities were always clean and well stocked, and the showers were hot with a pleasant water pressure. The kitchen area provides a place to wash up, drinking water, refridgeration, a freezer, and maps for the local area.
The site itself is idyllic; I was greeted with a gorgeous wildflower bank absolutely buzzing with bees and butterflies skipping all over the place. I also saw buzzards and kestrels flying overhead during my stay, and a Roe deer with her fawn one early morning in the orchard - my favourite spot to hide from the peak of the heat! The campfield is bordered with woodland, offering privacy, but also opens up over the valley, perfect for watching the sunset and stargazing. The chickens in the orchard are curious and friendly, I very much enjoyed popping down to see them, and appreciated their fresh eggs for breakfast in the morning.
For walkers, there are many footpaths and public bridleways straight off the path from the Batch, surrounded by a delightful mix of farm and woodland that I thoroughly enjoyed exploring. Dolebury warren is also about a 20 minute walk away, and is a gorgeous nature reserve with stunning views over Somerset!
I felt so welcomed and at peace during my time here and cannot wait to visit again and explore the area even further!

Liked What a fabulous campsite!
Tim was so helpful and obviously takes great pride in his site, without imposing. Perfect balance.
Facilties (loos, shower and kitchen) were clean and didn't have to queue, even when site was fully booked.
I'd recommend ordering a breakfast : all local produce and delicious.
Local pubs within easy walking distance (The Crown was amazing) and evening meal at Star was good.
So many great walks from the Batch.

A really relaxed quiet camp site with good views.
Non-electric grass tent pitch
Liked The location was lovely having splendid views and being in a small area surrounded on three sides by trees. However to get there you needed to drive up a rugged track. I decided not to and parked at the bottom and walked up carrying my rucksack. Others did drive up.
The facilities are excellent and there is also a sort of social area where you could make a brew and have a chat.
Disliked The pub at the bottom of the hill does not do food in the evening but there are several pubs within walking distance.

From the manager: We are so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. i know you only booked last minute for one night but we do like to make every stay enjoyable. You did book what is heavily advertised as an "Almost Wild Camping" pitch The pitches are not mowed at this time of year(I suspect you're not familiar with "no mow May") to encourage a diversity of plant and insect life. On the other hand the kitchen sink area I think you are referring to was checked shortly before you arrived in the evening. Given you left early in the morning it was checked and cleaned shortly after you left. As you know we encourage campers to keep this area clean , but we will endeavour to ensure the area is checked late evening as well. If you would like a refund do not hesitate to contact us asap or we can offer you free camping on a return visit. Thank you for your honest and frank review.
