  • Spacious back-to-basics rural site in the Mendip Hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Cheddar Gorge and 25 minutes from Wookey Hole
  • Dog-friendly site with wood available for campfires
Check out a good chunk of the cheese-themed town of Cheddar from Mendip Camp, a spacious rural site in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty and a five-minute drive from the Somerset settlement’s scenic gorge. There’s splendid rural scenery all around here, and the folk on site are keen to keep the place as low-key as possible to minimise its impact. As such, there are no showers or hot water on site, but guests will have access to ladies and gents’ toilets close to the pitches. To complete the classic countryside experience, campfires are enthusiastically encouraged: you can pick up logs and kindling at the park or bring your own along if you prefer. With such fine views from the site, it’s no surprise to hear that the walking is equally excellent in the surrounds: particularly recommended are the trails in the nearby forest, with access to Blackdown Mead for cracking views over the River Severn. Clearly, a trip to Cheddar Gorge is also a must when staying here, plus a vineyard, adventure park and animal park are also within a half-hour drive, as are the show caves of Wookey Hole. After supplies for après-amble barbecues? Cheddar is also a handy spot for grabbing bits and bobs at the supermarkets and shops – including cheese, of course – or dining at one of the eateries.

Local attractions

This site’s a brill base for checking out Cheddar Gorge’s walking trails well above sea level, navigating the 500,000-year-old Gough’s Cave or touring the National Trust’s Tudor-era King John’s Hunting Lodge (all 10 minutes’ drive). You could also stretch the legs at Chew Valley Lake, a reservoir well worth roaming around (20 minutes). Reward yourself after lengthy strolls with wine tasting at the Aldwick Estate vineyards (15 minutes) or, if you’re with the kids, get to Puxton Park for adventures with the animals. There’s also a soft play area, aerial climbing and a boating lake at this spot amid 40 acres of countryside (20 minutes). Small travellers also love splashing at the coast on Burnham-on-Sea beach (25 minutes), one of the longest stretches of sand in Europe, and investigating the underground spaces in the Wookey Hole caves (25 minutes). Chew Valley Animal Park, also 25 minutes away, is another winner with the wee ones for its varied range of creatures – from donkeys and meerkats to skunks and African pygmy hedgehogs.
